Josefa has an incredibly detailed knowledge of and sensibility regarding old television culture and the old weird NYC restaurants, among other things.

Thank you, I appreciate having an audience who cares about such material

Feels particularly germane atm to say that ILX is home to an exceptional group of people. I value this space and pretty much all y'all more than I can say. And perhaps I need to say it more often and with more specificity, because you just never know, do you.

I was going to search for this thread just so that I could post something similar, but you beat me to it. Jerk.

for sure. <3 old lunch, and all of you, really. we are just people talking to each other

When in a conversation irl I refer to ILX, it is so weird and hard to sum up this place in a short way that captures the outsize impact this place has had on me. "Message board where I learn about everything" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

I tried to find a way to tell my wife that someone I knew, but only in a way, passed away, and it was tougher (in every sense) to convey than I expected. How do you describe ILX? How in the world do you describe Dr. Morbius to someone who has no idea who or what you are taking about?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 October 2020 12:45 (three years ago) link

Yeah, i think I learned to be an adult here.

Tough lessons sometimes, but this is probably the closest thing I have to a church fellowship.

i was going to say, message board isnt really all this is any more. a digital village?

cointelamateur (m bison), Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:10 (three years ago) link

I try to think of ways to describe it or talk about people on it that aren’t defensive-sounding but it’s hard. Then I want to backtrack and to add things like “but I met him several times in real life and used to run into him quite a bit in the city! One of his best friends lives a few blocks from me! She used to date one of my best friends when they were in college, he was in my wedding party. As was my other friend who is a DJ at the station where she is also a DJ, where he was well-known as a volunteer! It’s all connected do you see?” So even more defensive. I have some formulations that I tell myself at least, but I can’t type them into the chat box right now.

thanks to Covid I essentially have no friends right now so yes this community is kind of important to me

frogbs, Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:34 (three years ago) link

definitely didn't see myself posting on and off for 15 years here. closest experience I had was a web magazine I used to write music reviews for between 2000 - 2005. That board, we are all mostly still in contact, but it's not like it is here - the messages are infrequent, and we no longer have a board where we all post to. it's kind of scattered on FB, and some of us have met in real life but not many.

admittedly around 2016 I was frustrated here and only sticking around to read the politics thread until Trump was vanquished so I could skedaddle away, and after that didn't happen, I stuck around to be assuaged, since everybody I knew IRL was utterly freaking out in ways that weren't helpful to me, that I wasn't able to parse.

was only after that where I managed to actually properly connect with people here for the first time due to my hair-trigger anger issues that often make message boards difficult. i'm glad for that as right now, I need a board like this for more cogent, even-handed takes where my friends, great people as they are, tend to be too stressed out to help me parse a lot of what's going on in calm, reasoned tones.

I realize the board began as a community as many of the original posters knew each other IRL, but even as the board moved on from those days and the community tended to be more people who didn't know each other IRL, it was pretty apparent that everybody here gives a shit about each other's offline lives, and (for teh most part) engages with each other as human beings rather than just sentient display names.

have definitely learned a lot here - hell, my earliest posts in 2004 barely appear to be English, and filled with ellipses. a large part of my vocabulary and improved writing style came from absorbing the things I learned and read here.

have definitely needed this place during the pandemic. am grateful for it.

I certainly can't speak for Morbz, but I know that for me, knowing that so many of you were rooting for me when I was going through cancer treatments was really touching. Somehow, this place has taught me some essential lessons about what it is to be human, and I'm really grateful for all of you, even if I am sometimes a crabby leftist jerk.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 22 October 2020 13:54 (three years ago) link

i wish. I used this on BBSs when I was 15 because my friends would read the messages I wrote and said "are you a damn caveman"

Neanderthal, Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:02 (three years ago) link

I have been on here for around 20 years. I've written some absolutely juvenile, ignorant and frankly offensive rubbish on this board in the past which I'm really very ashamed of, and it's a wonder anyone still gives me the time of day. But I've also learnt a lot from reading other posters and from being challenged on a lot of things I'd never thought to question until that point. So to those ends, I completely identify with ILX as being somewhere I learn about everything and where I learnt to grow up.

lol I remember a certain ilxor randomly showing up in my hometown (population: 35,000) and getting a drink and having to explain to my wife what this was and how I kinda know this guy but don't really know him...anyway it was my first time ever meeting someone "from the internet"

This, really, so much.

My uncle died yesterday morning. We had been expecting it for a long time really, but he fell off precipitously the last few days.

My daughter saw me last night at my laptop, crying, and I had to somehow explain to her that it wasn’t because of our family member, but because of someone she’d never met, and neither had I—not in real life. But also someone who in some ways I knew more intimately, for whom I felt a deep affinity.

Feeling a lot of gratitude today for this place and for everybody here who has helped make life bearable through some rough recent years. Much love to you all.

sarahell, Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

xpost yeah I have a hard time describing ILX to people who don't already know it, as "message boards" in 2020 people either think you mean Reddit or like a Joe Bonnamassa phpBB fan-site which sees one new post every two weeks. the idea of a board where some people have posted to it for 20 years seems antiquated.

(course I also don't tell other people about ILX as I definitely aired some dirty laundry foolishly at various times that I wouldn't want to get out).

i was crying last night and didn't really know how to explain it to the non-ILX friends, so I simply wrote a rest in peace message for Morbs that was geared towards ILXors. I never met Bill/Morbs (sadly), but have been following his health journey and it was just overwhelmingly sad to me last night.

I think the only ILXor I met irl was bamcquern.

The only people I've ever met irl from ilx, from the old chilxor crew, all seem to have disappeared or post v v v v v v v infrequently (except Josh). I see their updates on other social media so I know they seem to be doing well, but I do miss that connection. I still feel like I float around the periphery of ilx even though I've been here on and off for 15 years or so.
