I tried to find a way to tell my wife that someone I knew, but only in a way, passed away, and it was tougher (in every sense) to convey than I expected. How do you describe ILX? How in the world do you describe Dr. Morbius to someone who has no idea who or what you are taking about?
aaahhhhhh fuck what
― kinder, Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:43 (four years ago) link
only nabisco could pull off an OTM tattoo imo.
fremme neppa venette in a cursive font would look class though

I'm lucky that my husband understood what ILX was almost immediately. He even met some old ilxors in Seattle back in 2013. Donna Br0wn, kate78, The Reverend, etc. I talked with him this morning (he's at work) and he was like, "oh, so even though you didn't know Bill had passed, you felt something. Explains why you were crabby all evening!" He and Morbz would have loved each other lol.

xpost yeah I have a hard time describing ILX to people who don't already know it, as "message boards" in 2020 people either think you mean Reddit or like a Joe Bonnamassa phpBB fan-site which sees one new post every two weeks.
Huh, I didn't really think of it like that - it depends on who you know of course - a lot of people I know in the UK I know from ILX or Livejournal - but my wife (who's from neither) gets what I say when I say the death of someone from the boards hit me. I think it's people who understand that a messageboard about X will stop being about X nearly immediately.
I mean, I could say I'm from an online community, but that just sounds like FetLife.

Karl, I really did cry laughing. My husband used to be a tattoo artist. He might pull out the machines and get working on my full leg tonight.

My husband knows about ILX, but the idea of message boards or anything else online flies over his head. He only recently stopped referring to everything I do online as either "texting " or "downloading."

Appeared on this thread with a plan to say something along the lines of "I really appreciate loads of people on here who respond to posts and I don't really know who you are" (There was a point where I recognised people - could link posts to real names but not so much now)and then I read the above stuff. It would be weird to name people but ta.

One time when I was still attempting to learn Norwegian I was talking to a well-known Norwegian-American writer about her father’s grammar book- she was telling me he never lost his accent until the day he died- which seemed to make her better-known Francophile writer husband a bit jealous. He was a cinephile too, I used to see him around at screenings, although I never saw him and Morbius in the same room.

zchyrs is a very good poster imo. i always make too many jokes about how our names are (or seem to be) so similar, but it really is kind of bizarre because their background seems to be very similar to my own, down to age and conservative upbringing. it's hard to explain, but the effect is of seeing like an alternate reality version of myself that composes great ilx posts and seems to be doing well and a good person. it's nice! so cheers to you, zchyrs. may the 2020s be the decade of great prosperity for Z's throughout the world

some, but not all, of the turmoil of the last 5 years has been the sensation of sitting at that table in the immediate aftermath of what happened, before you even have time to scoot out your chair and stand, and half the table has no problem with the situation at all
― just another 3-pinnochio post by (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link
just saying, in 100 years, "someone shit at your table" is going to be on the level of "6 in one hand, half a dozen in another" in terms of ubiquity. and it's all because of old lunch
*hugs*
