Sometimes you’re like UGH but then you look at the rest of the internet and hold on for dear life

yeah, i just stopped by a movie site where a week-old post about "the liberal agenda of race-mixing" remains pasted like used toilet paper to their forum and remains only somewhat challenged. it's an ugly ol' internet.

Seriously. The amount of verbal sewage that festers on video game websites in particular is kind of staggering.

Every time someone trolls on ILX they move one step closer to acquiring Norwegian citizenship.

One time when I was still attempting to learn Norwegian I was talking to a well-known Norwegian-American writer about her father’s grammar book- she was telling me he never lost his accent until the day he died- which seemed to make her better-known Francophile writer husband a bit jealous. He was a cinephile too, I used to see him around at screenings, although I never saw him and Morbius in the same room.

nah, but he used to post on Satan Stole My Teddybear and write reviews there, as did I for a few years

zchyrs is a very good poster imo. i always make too many jokes about how our names are (or seem to be) so similar, but it really is kind of bizarre because their background seems to be very similar to my own, down to age and conservative upbringing. it's hard to explain, but the effect is of seeing like an alternate reality version of myself that composes great ilx posts and seems to be doing well and a good person. it's nice! so cheers to you, zchyrs. may the 2020s be the decade of great prosperity for Z's throughout the world

Yes, it's very frustrating because I get the impulse to say "person x OTM" in other corners of the internet all the time.

one thing i like about old lunch is that we share a visceral, intuitive understanding of metaphor of someone taking a shit on your dining room table and pretending like everything is normal

just another 3-pinnochio post by (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:59 (four years ago) link

some, but not all, of the turmoil of the last 5 years has been the sensation of sitting at that table in the immediate aftermath of what happened, before you even have time to scoot out your chair and stand, and half the table has no problem with the situation at all

just another 3-pinnochio post by (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link

just saying, in 100 years, "someone shit at your table" is going to be on the level of "6 in one hand, half a dozen in another" in terms of ubiquity. and it's all because of old lunch

*hugs*

Not sure how to put it, but thanks.

Seconding this; I didn't post anything in the politics thread because I don't feel I know enough to weigh in, but I lurked on it all evening, and you all kept me somewhat sane and helped me make sense of the news as it was coming in. So thank you!

I want to commend harbl for being almost perpetually otm about political and ethical issues. I've definitely questioned my assumptions and kneejerk responses as a result.

i agree. i mean, it was a sad thread to read and sometimes frustrating, but i don't know of any better place to be during such a stressful night.

also it would be great to have your thoughts there, even if you feel like you know enough. i never know what i'm talking about, so it's nice to have company :)

I'm glad my husband got me off the internet relatively early— we were drunk and high and made weird electronic music from like 8:30-11p, which was bedtime....and I skipped through the thread this morning because of a clusterfuck moment that I wasn't having...

that said, I really do appreciate many of you for keeping things updated and in perspective.

Said it before, but I appreciate Neanderthal both because he talks a lot of sense, but also because I can really relate to his rare moments when the anxiety takes over.

I appreciate you too jon, and I feel like sometimes I start having a go at things in general, it might come across as me going at you but it never is - plus you have good taste in music ;).

I am very embarrassed about my outburst last night and that is unfortunately what my anxiety does to me. amazed i haven't been beat up more often.

we're all good people

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 17:35 (four years ago) link

Man I think we are all forgiven our anxieties this week, it's all good. It's part of why I had to duck out of the politics thread earlier this week, it felt like a lot of people had (at that point, anyway) found their zen and were sniping a little at people who brought in this anxiety. Which I get, but I mean, it's helpful to express it too.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 17:36 (four years ago) link

I love the lot of you.

with me if I start wigging out, it's usually because the thing someone is saying to me, rational or not, is sparking my own fear, and I am trying to quell that fear.

most of my eccentric posts are to convince myself as much as other people lol.
