That's an odd show, it must have been after Jon moved back to New England and Gregg was in town tour managing for either Von LMO, Mr. Bungle or Link Wray.

The Zip Code Rapists to me were funnier in theory than practice. The Trouser Press guide write-up of them is better than listening to them imo.

The show I saw them play as Zip Code Redemption last year was rather delightful and was pretty much all tongue in cheek covers (Back on the Chain Gang, You Oughta Know, and Wake me up before You Go-Go are the ones I nabbed some video of). As an added bonus, Gregg wore a Reese's Pieces T-shirt, which had to be a reference to the immortal Neil Hamburger E.T. joke.

Is it fair to just call this performance art at this point? It's broken out of all of its frames.

I think that would have been a fair characterization even years ago

when heidecker blended his real life name/persona with his comedy, it became performance life art, imo

there is no clear line between "real" or "performing" heidecker in any context now. i suppose that's true to an extent for all well-known artists, but i think he has taken it to a new level

I think it's just the likelihood that OCATC won't be returning to Adult Swim and yet will clearly continue to exist as A Thing even without an attendant show that caused the lightbulb above my head to pop on.

xp I think in some ways that distinction has actually become clearer these past couple of years, largely because of the podcast...he is more evidently in or out of character as "real" Tim gets more exposure, the curtain has definitely been pulled back a little

in the early days of the podcast I remember him refusing questions on air about On Cinema (not for exanple tour dates, but the process, what's in the works, etc.) but now he seems kind of open to it which bums me out a little

Hearing him talk for an hour about Paul Simon's Surprise is about as mask-off as it gets. Also that Office Hours episode when he had gotten targeted by Q folks.

The “real” Tim sadly has such corny taste in music.

Tim is a bit over earnest as a musician and music lover, which is an interesting stark contrast against his persona in regards to comedy. I think he's been a little wrapped up in feeling like a Real Indie Rockstar this past year especially, but I don't fault him! Glad he's having so much fun.

As Hadrian said it wasn't that long ago when it was very rare to witness Tim out of (some sort of) character/performance.

I can't even imagine the musical crossover between IRL Gregg & Tim. Gregg is far more open-minded than he gets credit for, but he's long operated in some of the more extreme fringes of music to some of the more commercial (tour manager for Link Wray, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More... & VonLMO lol)

Tim's music influence is dad rock as far as I can tell but he seems to know a lot about top level indie stuff too.
Is that corny in 2020? I don't think so. It is hip to un-ironically like music that was previously firmly cheese & corn. Who doesn't like Elote?

his taste in music is a big part of his public persona nowadays. I think his music is fine and I like 70s singer-songwriters but I guess it could irk otherwise
