mookieproof, Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:17 (four years ago)

:(

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:57 (four years ago)

i want to know whose idea it was that saru do that behind-the-back arm-swishing thing, because it is annoying and brilliant

mookieproof, Saturday, 21 November 2020 05:21 (four years ago)

YES

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 21 November 2020 07:22 (four years ago)

Saru is so soft! I guess there's no point in him pretending that he has a standard hierarchical relationship with his crew after all they've been through. When he was talking to Tilly in particular, I was thinking, what captain talks this way with an ensign? (Not complaining about it, I know it's not real life or anything, I just noticed it.) On a related note, Tilly is long overdue a promotion.

trishyb, Saturday, 21 November 2020 10:03 (four years ago)

agree!

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 21 November 2020 17:35 (four years ago)

Ah now this may be where I'm at a disadvantage. If there's any assumed knowledge of other series, I'm gonna miss things, Ive not seem more than S1 of DS9.

― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, November 16, 2020 6:13 PM bookmarkflaglink

DS9 hardly ever gets referenced by the other series -- the Alpha Quadrant fights a war that requires a combined alliance among THREE major powers, and Voyager and the movies act like that never happened -- but the real reason to watch DS9 is because it's the best Trek.

― I want to luhbahguh babum gum (Leee), Monday, November 16, 2020 6:16 PM bookmarkflaglink

I take back what I said, definitely catch up on the entirety of DS9 to really get the self sealing stem bolts joke.

Niplheim (Leee), Sunday, 22 November 2020 00:43 (four years ago)

lotta weeping in this show

mookieproof, Friday, 27 November 2020 02:53 (four years ago)

With Michael suddenly being proud sis to her estranged brother, I'd complain about Disco ignoring its own characterizations, but hey, that's a time-honored Trek tradition.

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Friday, 27 November 2020 03:36 (four years ago)

Enjoyed the last season but feel weirdly uncommitted to catching up this time, after the first three episodes. Missing anything?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 27 November 2020 13:23 (four years ago)

man i loved this episode

i cant really bring much critical analysis to the table but just the way Michael’s estranged relationship with her mom was mirrored in her estrangement from Vulcan AND the Federation, it was v meaningful & i liked the way it played out. but especially on the mother daughter level, it felt v real & well-observed

i love the relationships on this show

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 27 November 2020 20:55 (four years ago)

I liked the Picard-crossover of bringing the Qowat Milat back in!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 27 November 2020 23:02 (four years ago)

But uuugghh Burnham stop weeping so much it is not befitting of a supposed commander.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 27 November 2020 23:03 (four years ago)

man u guys are harsh lol

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 28 November 2020 01:15 (four years ago)

People seem to like the Trill episode, #4. But I hate the b-plot on the ship.

wasdnuos (abanana), Saturday, 28 November 2020 01:28 (four years ago)

i'm really enjoying this, and it certainly is a rebound from complaints that earlier seasons were too grimdark

booker seems mostly wasted so far, apart from getting burnham laid. (and who else is getting laid besides stamets and hugh? gene roddenberry would never approve.) best new character = grudge, although i like the admiral

also detmer's eyes are so enormous that it's distracting

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 November 2020 01:51 (four years ago)

Is there still a story simmering in the background re her and the episodes she kept happening? That all seems to have stopped. I thought she had nanites in her or something. Or was all that just "I am fucking broken cos I piloted a ship through a wormhole and crashlanded it on a planet"?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 28 November 2020 03:49 (four years ago)

happening = having

gah.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 28 November 2020 03:49 (four years ago)

yeah i thought so too but think it ended up being the PTSD that Dr Ricky offered to talk to her about

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 28 November 2020 04:15 (four years ago)

Is this the only episode where nobody shoots or punches each other or blows something up?

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 28 November 2020 04:27 (four years ago)

it felt like being punched when the vulcan woman used the phrase’a big ask’

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 November 2020 18:05 (four years ago)

she punched me (it felt like a big ask) 🎵

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 28 November 2020 23:00 (four years ago)

Yeah that was almost as bad as "JL" on Picard.

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:46 (four years ago)

dont remind me >:(

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 29 November 2020 19:21 (four years ago)

never seen anyone with eyes as enormous as detmer’s. half her face is eyeball

linus must be in love, although i can’t tell if detmer and owosekun the navigator or together or what

mookieproof, Thursday, 10 December 2020 07:50 (four years ago)

look up fka twigs

wasdnuos (abanana), Thursday, 10 December 2020 08:02 (four years ago)

haven’t watched this week’s yet, have they given the blonde who reacts with wild facial expressions to everything some more lines yet?

mh, Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:51 (four years ago)

BTW did everyone else already know this, that Ryn is Tilley's partner IRL? He's not really even an actor, but a massive Trekkie and got the part thru her somehow I think?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 10 December 2020 21:55 (four years ago)

the blonde who reacts with wild facial expressions

Isn't she the re-cast Airiam?

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Thursday, 10 December 2020 22:42 (four years ago)

xp i did not know that. mostly i was struck by tilley being irl 35

so she's 35 and second in command, at least make her a lieutenant ffs

mookieproof, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:45 (four years ago)

mirror universe costuming looks distractingly like a Michael Jackson video circa “Remember the Time” and I cant unsee it

sorry i am sorry

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 December 2020 05:07 (four years ago)

ie Dangerous World Tour concert looks not “Remember the Time” music video looks

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 December 2020 05:12 (four years ago)

absolutely support yeoh-centered episodes featuring crazy miror burnham but i fear this is going to ultimately suck

very much appreciate when canadian accents slip through, as with cronenberg and the barzan woman

mookieproof, Friday, 11 December 2020 06:37 (four years ago)

yeah i dont hold out high hopes but i’ll enjoy the journey

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 December 2020 06:59 (four years ago)

so is the dude who magically appeared on that planet a Q or what?

mh, Friday, 11 December 2020 13:20 (four years ago)

That was my thinking!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2020 04:46 (four years ago)

The mirror universe play scene had a real Hamlet feel and I'm sure that wasn't a coincidence.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2020 04:47 (four years ago)

And Veg otm on the costuming... and lol the makeup, so much 80s new wave club eyeshadow going on there.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2020 04:48 (four years ago)

Michael looked like Rihanna!

Georgiou looked cool though, esp when she got that amazing headpiece

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 December 2020 06:34 (four years ago)

omg i loved that headpiece so much

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2020 08:47 (four years ago)

Only Moira Rose has had better headgear this year.

trishyb, Saturday, 12 December 2020 18:59 (four years ago)

I just spent the last two weeks binging this show and find it - really good fun? like, the last trek I watched end-to-end was probably Voyager and this is vastly more enjoyable - frequently I am in awe of how unapologetically silly it is and there are some audaciously unearned emotional moments but can easily forgive these in service of such a wild ride

it’s positively avant-garde how underdeveloped the bridge crew are - perhaps like the original series in that way I guess, it felt very exciting when those guys got character moments in Star Trek IV

anyway

the least famous person you were surprised to discover (emsworth), Saturday, 12 December 2020 23:14 (four years ago)

it’s positively avant-garde how underdeveloped the bridge crew are

lol otm. absolutely no clue what those two guys' names are (or what airiam does)

the contrast between various bridge designs in various series is v. funny to me. why does the original series have like a pit? why does the next generation have wood paneling? why is disco's bridge unreasonably enormous and poorly lit?

(that said, the set/sound design etc. has been outstanding throughout)

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 December 2020 01:55 (four years ago)

there are some audaciously unearned emotional moments

Yes, this is well put. I mean I love this show too, but sometimes you're getting a dramatic emotional moment and thinking "but why? Theres no back story here". Burnham's whole relationship with Book for instance, she had a whole year with him we're not privy to, and sometimes "I'm just different now/I dont fit in anymore" didnt work for me I guess?

I sound like a negative nellie though - I do love this show.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 13 December 2020 02:23 (four years ago)

seems pretty natural to me that she and booker would bang (if not wait the whole year for discovery to arrive to do so)

someone ask tuomas what grudge's thoughts on the matter are

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 December 2020 02:50 (four years ago)

I definitely made sure to check the captioning to see if they spelled Carl with a Q.

I kind of dreaded going back to the Mirrorverse because fascism but the episode benefited from it, I think! The characters got to have personality (SMG laid into the campiness with relish, which I'm there for) and more interesting complications than everyone being overachievers who don't like to ask for help. I wonder if the Disco writing room is suffering from a Roddenberry Rules effect that TNG struggled with early on, where they really lay the "squabbling but ultimately ride-or-die" on thick.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Sunday, 13 December 2020 06:31 (four years ago)

I thought the latest episode was okay, but I have a hard time understanding why they would do a whole two-parter "what if" just so they can solve the subplot of Georgious's illness, which doesn't seem to tie in with the other plots of this season in any way? Also, it's really hard to understand why everyone (not just Michael) seems to care about the mass murderer despot from another universe so much, including the Starfleet leader guy, since he's willing to send the most important ship in his fleet to mission that has a 5% chance of saving her?

OTOH, I do like how this season has been more and more episodic than the previous two, with no big conflict or big villain impacting every episode, so they've been able to focus on proper Trekky plots such as exploration and space politics. With both of the previous seasons, the overarching plot felt cool at first, but ultimately fell flat in the end. I guess "what caused the Burn?" is the main plot of this episode, but I appreciate that it's been more of background thing, with almost every episode having a self-contained plot in itself. So in that sense is cool that they can just do a two-part "what if" Mirror Universe story if they feel like doing one.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 10:21 (four years ago)

Also, I think it's interesting that's it not at all clear whether Discovery will ever return to its own time. At the beginning of the season I was certain it would happen in the finale, but now I'm not so sure anymore? Seems like this setting has more story potential than what can be explored in just one season, so I'm hoping they stay there. And the ship and its crew being stuck in the future would also help to resolve the continuity issues its retcons have caused for the franchise, i.e. why no one is using the mycelial network in the series set after Discovery's first two seasons (not even in Voyager, where it would've been extremely handy), why Spock's sister never visits him, etc.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 10:27 (four years ago)

I stopped watching this 5 eps ago, a two part mirror universe story focussing on Georgiou does not make me want to start up again. "Mirror, mirror" is the only good mirror universe episode solely for the lolz, that TNG never went there is a blessing. And yes Georgiou's continued interest in our universe and our characters' concern for her is a complete mystery.
