I have been to Portland three times this year with vegans! I am not a vegan, but yr vegan food is great, I have been happy every time. Portland: Books, Good Beer, and Tempeh.

Energy Food - the bagpipe-playing, unicycle guys on Hawthorne bring out the worst in all of us. It's just what they do.

Sunday nights at Beulahland has music videos by request after 8 or so. It's pretty much a DIY 120 Minutes/Headbanger's Ball. I try to go there weekly, and it's a blast.

Meanwhile, my experiment of trying to cool my bedroom down with two box fans facing opposite ways in different windows seems to have worked.

xpost -- I'm looking forward to the adult soap box derby -- I haven't been in a few years even though I live just a stone's throw away from Tabor. I've always been out of town that weekend. But then the week after that I'm moving out to east county, so future visits will be more difficult.

i just visited portland last week, was thoroughly amazed by the number of bars and restaurants and indie boutiques. portland is the new oakland, i think. if i didn't have things tying me down (like a wife and job) i'd move there in a heartbeat. good job portland!

For those wanting cheap entertainment, i'm throwing a birthday pizza party for me tonight at Ground Kontrol from 7pm onward. It promises to be appropriately loud & stupid.

I like loud n' stupid! I might stop by after my roommate interview thing for some Dr Who pinball.

PS it is hard to find people to live with up in this piece, everybody wants me to be a vegan woman non-smoker.

That Portland/Oakland thing is funny, since from time to time in Oakland I'm struck by how much it reminds me of of Portland. Berkeley and parts of Seattle factor into this as well.
Also, had breakfast at Gravy a couple years back and it was good, but the most unforgettable part was that it took like an hour and a half to be served!

i'm visiting portland for a week starting tomorrow. can anyone recommend a dj/dance night, or good shows in general? willamette week hasn't updated its music listings yet, don't know where else to check.

also would be interested in hearing about anything else particularly cool going on. excited!

Never been to any of them but my brother-in-law seems to always be DJing at some club somewhere when he's not a philosophy professor at other places. I know he veers pretty heavy towards hip-hop rather than straight up dance:

holocene is the first best choice for dance music, depending what's going on. also check a night called Nightclubbing (i think their myspace has the most up-to-date info). they do it at various venues, might be a monthly.

Dunes is... not very cool. It's like a haven for underagers with fake IDs mostly.

You could always come to my DJ night Thursdays! But it's at a rock & roller dive bar where I get looked at sideways for playing like bizarre love triangle, much less being able to keep a sustained dance thing going on.
