I'm still trying to figure out what that grassy area in the center is. At first it looked like some kind of traffic circle, but then I started to think that the apparent curvature of the wall was actually fish-eye lens distortion and the wall is actually fairly straight. Still not sure though. And I can't figure out what is the in the low-lying area behind those bushes. Perhaps a river or train tracks?

Maybe non-English looking building on left in an otherwise English looking scene suggests more continental influence ?some place in Kent maybe

that's not my post, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 02:53 (three years ago) link

o.nate, yeah was thinking that too could even be another road down there

Sorry, but that is how I feel (Ste), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 07:23 (three years ago) link

My guess is pedestrian underpass.

ledge, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 07:50 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I'd say it's a pedestrian underpass that goes through the roundabout.

Like caek, I don't think it's northern.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 09:03 (three years ago) link

Another vote for pedestrian underpass, I'm sure of it. And that's a roundabout, fish-eye or no fish-eye. The building on the left could easily be a hotel, don't think it looks that un-English if so

Is this defo a city? Getting distinct town vibes

I don't see a Salvation Army band playing nor children drinking lemonade, so yeah, northern town is out.

After dropping down onto a bunch of hunches I realised there maybe aren't as many roundabouts with pedestrian underpasses as I'd thought, so googled "traffic roundabouts with pedestrian underpasses" which quickly led me to a news story about renovation of St Bot's roundabout in Colchester

The strange building on the right is, rather inevitably, an NCP car park

Yes! Tough one but thought it was gettable in one view. Or Something bossing it. Caek with a possible assist, but looking like this one was all handled in house at the end of the day

dumb american question--i know what an american shithole is: is colchester a shithole? With respect to anyone who lives there

Also just want to say ho much fun is it to tool around a town you've never been in, zipping down streets.

All I really know about Colchester is that parts of it are very old and Damon Albarn is from there

Two pics for the price of one as i liked the tiles too much not to include them but i'd be astonished if anyone worked it out from that.

You say "tiles" I say "Portugal," but that doesn't look like Portugal.

nickn, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 16:40 (three years ago) link

So the buildings are unfinished, there's enough precipitation that the sidewalks have some decent plant life, and plywood is popular.

Initial thought is somewhere in Turkey or adjacent but not super confident on that

second pic green roof looks like it might have a Russian Orthodox cross at its peak

Yes just about to say similar about more of a Russian feel in second

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 17:54 (three years ago) link

Couldn't tell on the cross but definitely on the green bit

Not sure on houses, more of a Bulgarian feel but nothing more than hunches

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 17:58 (three years ago) link

The buildings on the right in first picture all look like new residential construction for some reasonably prosperous clients.

I think it was around the north east of the city but I can’t find it myself either now.

The green dome in the other picture is part of the Sufi poet Rumi’s mausoleum.

dumb american question--i know what an american shithole is: is colchester a shithole? With respect to anyone who lives there

― a (waterface),

Someone more familiar with Colchester will answer better than me, but I don't think its somewhere that would spring to mind if you were thinking "most shithole places". Its a satellite town of London, might not be in the top bracket of satellite towns but probably relatively high. I guess kind of above average but with neutral-is reputation? I'm going non-shithole but hedging my bets

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:36 (three years ago) link

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/19118281.colchester-named-one-top-places-live-uk/

172nd best out of 1372 places in the UK according to this piece. Its enough for me to unhedge my bets, non-shithole it is!

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:39 (three years ago) link

how ?!

― that's not my post

I felt it was Turkey (though more from the first pic which I still can't find than the second. I though Antalya or Adana at first, then I looked at Konya, that green dome thing pops up pretty quickly once you look at photos of Konya - though initially I thought the angle of the dome was wrong I thought there might be other similar ones. Dropped in on centre of Konya and the feel was like the second pic, and headed close to where the dome thing is and I knew was in right place just needed to moved around a bit to find the exact view

The other view, I searched property sites for Konya thinking it looks super new / not finished yet and would probably be a listing in one of the two buildings. Found one with similar tiling I linked above, but wasn't able to find the right building

Scooted around the city a bit. Colchester might not be a shithole, but Konya looks to be one. The whole city appears to be composed of buildings going up, buildings falling down, or both

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:46 (three years ago) link

Bravo and thanks for the explanation. Key insight was it looked like Turkey and then narrow down to large regional cities to find the green dome.

that's not my post, Thursday, 23 September 2021 00:24 (three years ago) link

Yeah I was kind of joking with the shithole comment. I was generally thinking of “pleasant” market towns outside London. Conventional wisdom is these places are not shitholes. Couldn’t pay me to live in one though.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 23 September 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

pretty much everywhere that isn't a major city in the u.s. is a shithole imo, i imagine it's the same for the uk.
