That arch bridge looks big enough to be listed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_arch_bridge_spans

Novosibirsk

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:42 (three years ago) link

I was actually looking at this photo on Saturday but three clicks away so close!

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:48 (three years ago) link

Well done, was it the bridge? Turns out it is on nashwan's list at number 32, the bugrinsky bridge

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:51 (three years ago) link

well done.

there's something really eerie about that deck on the hotel.

kind of dying to know what the ski jump is all about

No, I just went back to my hunch cities (Omsk, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Yekaterinburg) to look for the new view. I was already pretty set on it being Russia, and most likely east of the Urals. Landed on an aerial in Novosibirsk and became more convinced that was the river, span around and saw the ski jump thing

I'd already looked at the dot next to the river hotel on Friday, but was looking at the main building not the weird cabin.

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 13:00 (three years ago) link

I was about to start mooching around Novosibirsk based on the bridge having initially thought it looked too picturesque. Interesting that there's only one bridge like that (at least that scale) in the entire country.

looks like it might actually be a ski jump just waiting for some snow:

very impressive guesswork, cherry blossom.

yeah kudos, called Russia very quickly

It was a good one! Though slightly annoyed that I had it from the second view but didn't realize!

French/english calender, plug socket looks european, could be a burgundy/eu passport behind the juice cup with a distinctive logo (though burgundy is not eu exclusive), (A?)TM sign in the background.

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:30 (three years ago) link

Just to speculate wildly and contradict the above, the calendar says July, the clock on one of the computers says 12 something, the sunlight is coming straight through the window so the sun is low - somewhere in the southern temperate zone?

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:43 (three years ago) link

I keep thinking that's a bottle of vodka on the desk behind the mousemat.

nashwan, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:49 (three years ago) link

I think the sun is just reflected in an opposite window, not low in the sky.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 09:21 (three years ago) link

Nobody loves a stamp like the former Soviet Union. The poster in the back right might say Ев. I can’t tell whether the partially blocked sign says TM or ГМ.

It looks like there are a couple of purple passports on the desk, perhaps suggesting Russia, Mongolia or Uzbekistan, if the signs are in Cyrillic.

The books are either round an unusual way or possibly for a language that reads right to left. If it was just one, I’d think it might be a Quran.

I’m leaning towards Baku, for no justifiable reason.

possible, if the window is at an angle.

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 09:58 (three years ago) link

Does the partially blocked sign say ATM? Otherwise I've got nothing here, think I'll be sitting back and watching this one develop

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:15 (three years ago) link

Is that an oil refinery or a port on the calendar?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:28 (three years ago) link

Pretty sure it's a port with those cranes

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:33 (three years ago) link

ATM seems probable, the small sign beneath could be a hand holding a debet/credit card.

The most visible monitor is ThinkCentre brand, which hardly helps much. Was wondering whether the keyboard looked more QWERTY or AZERTY, but can't really tell.

Is that fan outside ?

Sorry, but that is how I feel (Ste), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 13:00 (three years ago) link

Looks like a wall-mounted fan. I don't think that space beyond glass door is outside, looks like a hallway. The ATM sign there makes me think its in an airport or someplace like that, and we are inside some kind of server room/store room.

o. nate, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 13:36 (three years ago) link

Well they need to uninstall that Adobe software anyway

I feel like the logo on the smoothie might be a clue.

Porking level G4 (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 14:47 (three years ago) link

Wall-mounted fan makes me think this might be a cool northern climate where air-conditioning is not common in public buildings.

o. nate, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 14:51 (three years ago) link

The logo looks like every generic smoothie/juice bar I've ever seen

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

Ft. Lauderdale

I'm a sovereign jazz citizen (the table is the table), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

Or perhaps its a very hot climate, where combination of fan and AC is required (suggested by presence of AC wall unit).

o. nate, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 17:51 (three years ago) link

I think I found the smoothie cup. On a Nigerian shopping site, but apparently made in UAE. Not sure that helps:

Any chance of a second photo clue?

o. nate, Friday, 1 October 2021 15:23 (three years ago) link

I'm wondering if that light/dark blue logo on the mousepad is something I've seen before but I really don't know

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:16 (three years ago) link

next to that ATM sign there's something with a regular E and a fancy B but that can be anything? Exchange Bank?

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:18 (three years ago) link

holy crap! Exim Bank, Uganda?

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:28 (three years ago) link

Tanzania, too

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:29 (three years ago) link

Djibouti too but I think that's all of them with this logo?

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:32 (three years ago) link

there can't be that many container ports in those three countries I would think?

StanM, Friday, 1 October 2021 17:39 (three years ago) link

I would guess the calendar is some global corporate thing not related to the city in question.

ledge, Saturday, 2 October 2021 07:13 (three years ago) link

that Exim Bank logo isn't showing up anymore - here's another one just in case
