Midweek Madness II

An older city in the US.
― And of course the worms! (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 16:00 (three years ago) link
Yeah, that fire escape (?) at the front of the building made me think US as well - some kind of French quarter or euro district type deal? This building we're in has annoyingly little on the windows (post offices, banks, train stations would have all kinds of stuff on there I would expect)
― StanM, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 16:08 (three years ago) link
there's a map behind the open door near the camera but it isn't giving much away
― StanM, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link
I'm curious about the 2nd trash receptacle that's further away from the camera. I guess maybe it's for recycling?

I wonder if playing with the contrast would bring out the text on the yellow vertical sign or the buildings across the plaza.

not on my freeware image editor
― StanM, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 17:18 (three years ago) link
I guess maybe the vestibule between two sets of doors indicates a place with cold winters.

Findlay Market in Cincinnati OH
https://goo.gl/maps/MywMEo7zF9yHybn1A
I've actually been there, though I didn't recognize it.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 18:37 (three years ago) link
Good one, thought these last two might go a little quicker after some tough ones. What was your route to it?
― cherry blossom, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 19:37 (three years ago) link
Zoomed in on the map and made out the street name "Race St". Tried a few cities with a Race Street. Got to Cincinnati and got lucky by clicking near Findlay Market right away, noticed the red crossbeam construction and then it was just a matter of clicking nearby until I found the spot.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 19:42 (three years ago) link
I need a screen with more pixels, I can't even see Race St now you told me it's there
― StanM, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 19:56 (three years ago) link
Yeah I even tried to ENHANCE and was like "Mare St? Mace St? Dace St?"
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 20:04 (three years ago) link
Perhaps it helped that I downloaded the full image and looked at it in a photo editor rather than in the browser.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 20:23 (three years ago) link
So yes, an older US city that doesn't have much going for it!
― I'm a sovereign jazz citizen (the table is the table), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 21:33 (three years ago) link
i assumed it wasn't the US because there was somewhere to sit

A shitty resort.
― And of course the worms! (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 8 October 2021 21:06 (three years ago) link
Building top left doesn't look American to me so I think Europe, but obviously not Mediterranean. Woman with daughter looks vaguely East European or at least Middle European. Maybe somewhere on a lake? Or the Black Sea again, like Bulgaria or Romania?
― Zelda Zonk, Friday, 8 October 2021 23:11 (three years ago) link
blue and red water slides look pretty big, maybe a dedicated water park kind of thing?
― StanM, Saturday, 9 October 2021 00:25 (three years ago) link
Definitely a permanent park (all the umbrellas, and what looks like a concrete edge in the water area closest to the photographer). In fact, it doesn't look connected to a river or body of water at all because every pool edge I can see is concrete and I see vegetation beyond it.
― nickn, Saturday, 9 October 2021 01:09 (three years ago) link
No real clue where to start looking to be honest - hills, big white buildings in the distance, one of them with something on top maybe (observatory? dome?), a red/white antenna or chimney?Building on the left looks vaguely Austrian/Swiss/Alpine/Southern Germany? Lady looks kinda Eastern European maybe? But this could just as easily be in South America.
And there are a lot more blue spiral water slides in the world than I thought :-)
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 07:34 (three years ago) link
is that a coke can on the towel in the foreground? Can't make out letters or logo but could be a clue, don't know?
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 07:36 (three years ago) link
I'm also thinking that fence is impossibly complicated & could have been much simpler to make but anyway
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 07:43 (three years ago) link
i'm kind of fascinated by the fence! never seen one quite like it with that mix of rigid palings and weldmesh.
the half hipped roof on the far left might be traceable architecture but i wouldnt know where to start.
― micah, Sunday, 10 October 2021 09:25 (three years ago) link
I also thought that fence looked crazy complicated. Concrete edge to the water means yes this doesn't have to be near the sea/lake. Top right building still looks middle European to me, but the white apartment block looks wrong for a German city. And given the somewhat East European look of the woman, I'm still thinking that. Maybe Poland or something.
― Zelda Zonk, Sunday, 10 October 2021 09:29 (three years ago) link
Top left building I meant
oh, you already said that lady looked Eastern European - sorry I repeated that. I guess I agree then :)
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 09:48 (three years ago) link
Would be amazed if anyone got it on this photo alone though!
― Zelda Zonk, Sunday, 10 October 2021 09:48 (three years ago) link
that roof type is also called jerkinhead, apparently?
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 09:52 (three years ago) link
only in the us afaict
― micah, Sunday, 10 October 2021 10:42 (three years ago) link
Also known as a half hip roof, Wikipedia informs me - common in England, Denmark and Germany, and especially in Austria and Slovenia.

Searching for the largest outdoor swimming pools in Europe has failed to unearth anything up to now
― ignore the blue line (or something), Sunday, 10 October 2021 12:10 (three years ago) link
I keep staring at that fence and I wonder if it's 3-in-1 : no slats (just the metal), half filled with slats (like it is now) or completely closed off (stick in more slats in between the ones in the picture).
Unfortunately, looking for "weird multifunctional fences" hasn't gotten me anywhere useful :-)
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 14:58 (three years ago) link
The fence is a screen door from a Polish submarine…oof I’m funny.

i don't think its all that large on the scale of european water parks
― micah, Sunday, 10 October 2021 19:14 (three years ago) link
how does that building next to the lady's head have such a white featureless side on the central tower? I don't understand what's going on there.

Based on what I have seen of these European outdoor pools since searching I'd say it was on par with the big ones. Whilst conceding I'm no expert
― ignore the blue line (or something), Sunday, 10 October 2021 20:06 (three years ago) link
it's not easy to judge the scale from the pic but it seems to go back pretty far

I'm talking lidos and swimming pools btw, not man made lakes or anything

it all depends on how short these ladies are.
― StanM, Sunday, 10 October 2021 20:19 (three years ago) link
The combination of the grim fencing and the sheer size makes me think of somewhere like the Moczydło Water Park in Warsaw.
