xpost - yes, I hate DST, this shit is hitting me even harder as I get older. Also, coming out of the pandemic, I would really like it to not be full dark before I even leave work already. We don't need to artificially make it even worse!

I liked getting the extra hour, but yes, my body does not know how to adjust, I'm waking up way too early and not really going to sleep any earlier, so I just feel like shit

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 17:00 (three years ago) link

Ummm....isn't the current time...the actual sky planetary alignment time? It's DST during the summer that is the artificial one to give an extra hour of daylight in the evening. That's why the summer sun is directly overhead at 1pm instead of at noon.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 17:09 (three years ago) link

Well, yes, to be specific, this was the end of Daylight Savings Time, but the point is that the whole artificially shifting an hour thing is antiquated as fuck and needs to go away.

it’s either go home in the dark or eat breakfast in the dark, you can’t have it both ways. the days are shorter. i’d rather have a little light while i’m walking to the bus to go to work tbh.

this fact was hiding in plain sight but it's kind of blowing my mind tbh. like, the hottest part of the day in summer, 3-4 p.m., is really 2-3 p.m.

everyone talks about a blood shortage

but what about the crips, huh? HUH?

What about the national crip shortage

actually, it's "in which we're livin'." (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 18:06 (three years ago) link

is there a chip shortage.

i don't mind microchips I mean like Lays potato chips or if you're in the UK what we call french fries which yes are two different things but fucking answer my question dammit.

Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 18:16 (three years ago) link

I think there is a potato chip shortage, or at least supply chain issues!

The lunch places around here very frequently have absolutely bare chip racks, or just like 100 packets of one certain type which never seems to be consistent.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 18:18 (three years ago) link

You know, now that you mention it there were a few weeks where certain potato chips were seemingly unavailable at Trader Joe's.

Probably should have realised that cramming things into my bag on top of a bag of flour might lead to what is just a paper bag splitting. So have flour over a lot of things, bag, top of oven and stuff and have wasted a bit of it.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link

I split every bag of rice, oats and - particularly - raisins I ever open. Without fail, the floor looks like the Somme. I'm helpless with it.

the thing that gets me is that it's light at 04:30 in the summer and that's really 03:30

old man yelling at clouds stuff but work choosing to start in with the xmas music last week on the shopfloor meaning a full 6 weeks of it ahead had me despairing. oh and in more general terms 'black friday' having firmly established itself as a thing in the uk now (tbf i'm probably 8 -10 years late on that) continues to annoy.

Arson in the area and the idiot next door still insisting that teh street door is left unlocked for hours.l
Can't stand the guy anyway, but jeez.
Somebody got a portaloo attached to the men's shed container unit at the start of teh path into the woods. Youth from the area decided to set it alight yesterday. I had a fire in the stairwell something like 10 years ago which I don't want to have repeated. Could just be fear but think these youth are running out of things to set alight. Same ones have spent the last few weeks throwing fireworks around the estate.
I've given up talking to this guy after he called the gards on me for not liking being gaslit .
Have enjoyed the 15 years i have lived here for the most part. Not enjoyed having a racist twat living next to me.

Neglected to say we had a directive from the landlord that the door is supposed to be locked as a security, fire door and for insurance reasons which is being ignored by this guy and his equally dodgy wife.

Had that situation in current block of flats some years back. Illegal sublet in Flat 1 near the main front door had lost the main front door key - so was leaving the main door open on the latch. As I found out when they angrily confronted me when I locked it.

I reported the key situation to the management company a few days later after coming across a police blockade at the top of our road where they said they were searching for someone with firearm last spotted in the vicinity.

my mobile phone won't call home. it will call the gas company and the voicemail service but just hangs up before it rings if i call home. curious. have i blocked it somehow?

more than one way to skin a cat these days, of course, but had the usual 5 minutes of getting the levels right and 'i can't hear you, can you hear me?' - work computer is set up for meetings but personal laptop never has been. also linux.

have we forgotten how asterisks work anymore? at work, when reading people's posts, even reading articles, lately I see people deploy asterisks of the "see footnote/disclaimer" variety, and then I look for the footnote, and....nothing.

then in the case where I can ask someone what the asterisk means, sure enough, there was definitely an intended footnote ("oh, I was just pointing out it's a modified schedule", "Oh, I just meant it was a strike-shortened season") but they didn't write one, so I was meant to ascertain the asterisks' meaning through context clues only.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I got so sick of this on products (shampoo for example) sold on online retail sites that I emailed one of them and asked what the asterisk refers to. Products like that have tons of 'claims*'.

gah, have been paying £3 a month for a patreon podcast feed for a podcast i haven't been listening to for over a year. i finally have time to check them out again but the lowest tier is now £5 a month and i can't get to them.

(nothing stopping me, other than bandwidth, i guess, from paying the higher level for a month and downloading them all in that month. but it seems a bit cheeky)

koogs, Sunday, 28 November 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

went to cancel, it told me there were other tiers and would i like to see them. took me to a page listing my current option and all the things i didn't have access to before.

looks like there are two lists, or something, new customers only get the higher one, perhaps.

june 2020 was the last one i listened to 8(

right now we're doing a stage version of Silence of the Lambs with Elizabethan dialogue, our Clarice's real name is K@therine, but she goes by "Kat". for whatever reason, the director calls her by her first name, but calls her "K@therine" instead of Kat, and everybody else by their character names.

there's a character named Catherine Martin, and for multiple rehearsals, actors have pointed out that it's confusing because every time he gives an instruction to "Katherine", nobody knows if he means the actress Katherine who is playing Clarice, or the actress who is playing Catherine Martin. and despite him being informed of this at three different rehearsals, he continues to do it, and he could easily solve it by either just calling us all by our real names, or calling Kat "Clarice".

it's a stupid thing to get annoyed by because ultimately it's more a mild annoyance but it does simply because it's a stupid problem he created and could easily fix and yet every rehearsal it's the same refrain:

"Next, Katherine will move this set piece..."

"which Katherine?"

"Sorry, I mean the actress playing Clarice"

like an Abbott and Costello bit

I hate it when the dishwasher is getting pretty full, but you give it a look and think, hmm, it can definitely wait a little longer, to start it now seems like a waste of time and space. And then a short bit later the rest of the family shows up and somehow instantly generates an absolute deluge of dirty dishes, so many that not only is the dishwasher now full, but there are so many dishes left over that they can already fill a significant hunk of the next load after the one that I now need to do ASAP is finally done. Except now I have to wait two hours for the cycle to complete, with a stack of overflow dishes by the sink, already on deck.

3cd player is 16 years old and keeps going from playing ok to skipping entire discs. Or cannot start reading a disc so skips to next one. Was flashing up No Disc apart from the one it was playing.
So I need to keep using disc cleaner on it.
Is it dying.
I am a little attached to this thing. It's been in my bedroom all the time since I went there.
Is there a reason why it would skip entire discs? Like it'll go from disc 1 to disc 3 and not recognise the existence of disc 2. Just wondering if there is a good fix without defenestration or seeing if there is a repair shop. Do people even do that anymore?

Stevolende, Saturday, 18 December 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

Is it certain discs it doesn’t recognize? Copies maybe?

epistantophus, Saturday, 18 December 2021 21:37 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I've noticed some of my old CD-Rs are starting to decay, or show up as No Disc, too.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 December 2021 21:51 (two years ago) link

seems to read them some of teh time and not others. I don't think I've played anything I've burnt on there in a while . Should be official discs for teh most part.

In general the semiconductor lasers lose output power over time, resulting in less reliable reads, errors etc. I believe the laser assemblies for most makers are available on eBay etc, but I wouldn't really know about how to align them etc. If you want to keep yours going a bit longer, there are usually little adjustment screws near the laser lens which control laser power - you'd need to search for the model to know how to adjust them.
Heat is the enemy of laser diodes, never keep an optical disc player on top of something like an amp which sheds significant heat.
