If the early essays and fiction formed your impressions, I can imagine recoiling from her, hence why I tirelessly advocate for her essays after 1980, which I read way before STB.

I've tried. The writing is okay, not my cuppa. Her politics are abhorrent, and continued to be abhorrent long after her supposed left turn.
