specifically it looks like Indooroopilly looking toward Mt Coot-Tha, but if it is then you guys are fucking with me because my uncle and aunt lived in that exact region

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 6 December 2021 11:40 (two years ago) link

ive never been north of urangan so you're on your own

micah, Monday, 6 December 2021 11:42 (two years ago) link

no, that's further north.

micah, Monday, 6 December 2021 11:43 (two years ago) link

(suburb of Brisbane I mean)

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 6 December 2021 11:47 (two years ago) link

based on the satellite dish i think the photo is looking north.

micah, Monday, 6 December 2021 11:50 (two years ago) link

specifically it looks like Indooroopilly looking toward Mt Coot-Tha,

the 3d data is good around there and maybe i'm missing it but i can't see anything like the large developments in the middle and to the right of the hill.

So many apartment buildings - must be a big/touristy part of a big city? Not many clues to go on except the truck - the plants feel like they're more tropical than the parts of Brisbane I looked at, maybe?

StanM, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 18:29 (two years ago) link

the steering wheel is on the wrong side for Japan/Okinawa, right? and that 27 wouldn't be in western numbers either - nah, it almost has to be Australia (NZ? not hilly enough around Auckland?)

StanM, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 18:42 (two years ago) link

Japan drives on the left side too, but I think it's Australia/New Zealand too.

Looks like a Norfolk Island Pine behind the truck, which are native to that area, but widely planted elsewhere. Doesn't look fully tropical to me; that could almost be SoCal if you caught it at the right time of year.

nickn, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 18:47 (two years ago) link

i think it could easily be as far north as cairns

micah, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 19:52 (two years ago) link

it's certainly intriguing. there are a lot of very nice hillsides on the eastern side of Australia, I'm learning, but apartment buildings on them? Not so much. Or I keep missing them. But where, then?

StanM, Wednesday, 8 December 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

Second view needed, or a bit more time with this one?

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Thursday, 9 December 2021 12:11 (two years ago) link

My gut says it's NZ and somewhere in the Hutt Valley but I can't get any more from the pic.

... can we get a hint instead of a second pic? :-)

StanM, Thursday, 9 December 2021 18:27 (two years ago) link

intriguing part 2

- nearer the equator than we initially thought, based on the very short shadows?
- ACIFIC
- those two houses straight ahead have very eastern influenced looking roofs
- guy on the right looks rather white/american?

... is it like some Western enclave/american military presence in an otherwise Asian country, maybe?

or Hawaii, even?

StanM, Friday, 10 December 2021 09:08 (two years ago) link

i clicked a street in Honolulu that looked very similar indeed. but I think the right-hand steering wheels suggest not?

kinder, Friday, 10 December 2021 10:06 (two years ago) link

(similar to first pic, I mean)

man I nearly thought I got it, north of Hobart, Tasmania, but the 4+ apartment buildings aren't there either

StanM, Friday, 10 December 2021 11:01 (two years ago) link

4+ storey

I was convinced it's Cairns but i couldn't find it, so now I'm not

I'm pretty sure it's Samoa

I have zero familiarity with the area, but from some streetview trawling I do think it looks a lot like Northern Queensland.

o. nate, Friday, 10 December 2021 22:51 (two years ago) link

I've pretty much eliminated Noosa/Noosaville and also Townsville. Wondering about Mackay. The hill/mountain in back of the first shot looks typical of the Glasshouse Mountains which run down the eastern seaboard, a series of heavily eroded volcanic plugs which look like old teeth from a distance. We are an old continent so pretty much all of the topography is worn to bits.

that's what it looks like to me tbh, but on a pacific island

my general-area guesses have literally all been wrong though, so maybe use it as a "not-there" guide lol

rob, Saturday, 11 December 2021 00:48 (two years ago) link

isn't the steering wheel on the wrong side for Samoa?

Nice one!

StanM, Saturday, 11 December 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link

Wow!

StanM, Samoa uses RHD steering wheels, apparently— both types are legal, same as American Samoa.

I got it by googling "pacific restaurant queensland logo" and this was among the hits

it's not a city!

those multi storey apartment buildings have thrown me off - I've only looked at big cities because of those

StanM, Sunday, 12 December 2021 12:06 (two years ago) link

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 12:20 (two years ago) link

church spire, bridge with Roman arches, a row of similar looking houses... England? France?
