another episode, another character with an emotional crisis who has to be comforted and told that they got this before pulling through to save the day. tbf, i wasn’t expecting it to be the fucking ship’s computer’s turn

This season they've managed to make each episode half good and then half terrible, boring, therapy session.

Previous Trek had plenty of talking about feelings but they spent three seasons making all of these characters awful so WGAF.

then they do a space action sequence and it's like "oh you wanted this to be a Star Wars TV show"

xxp the huge bit there being that they established a crazy new ai life form that has untold knowledge and just forgot about it for half the season

I feel like there are three scripting teams and one is editorial doing “more feelings” and the first few episodes were done by people who were told “don’t actually use material we’ve got”

sir i must apologise, i spoke rashly during the earlier crisis because i have an emotional backstory, here is my emotional back story, now is a very good time to tell it to you, during this new crisis, it will only take 20 seconds because emotions are actually pretty simple cause and effect

I actually liked this one! It had a very TNG vibe to it, if nothing else, and the bathos was kept to a minimum IMO.

"I feel seen" - the writing is just embarrassingly bad

like i must say that i genuinely enjoy watching this show but part of that enjoyment is based on laughing at the dumb bits - and the computer saying “i feel seen” was probably the pick of this one for me

i think of myself as a sensitive respectful individual but there is something about the way this show “does” “feelings” that makes me feel like a grouchy right-wing knuckle-dragger

It's clumsy and unnatural. Instead of the sentient AI just steadily becoming part of the crew until they realize "oh shit, it's a being" they make it a stilted B-plot and finish up by telling instead of showing with the "I feel seen."

I’m pretty sure that was a Ferengi in the Federation vote, and possibly another one who was tending bar at some point.

first ep back after season break was pretty enjoyable! only one “you got this” & it wasnt even bc someone was sad

really liked the makeup on the mac tonight/ max-headroom-looking broker

I kept thinking of G'Kar from B5. It felt like there were loads of older Trek refs in this ep which made me realise how little of that Disco has been doing.

Some ferengis in the background, a shapshifter (who turned into a tribble, lol), payment with gold pressed latinum, and I think one camera pan went past an alien who looked the same as Morn from the DS9 bar. I'm sure there was more.

sad to sour the generally posi vibes here but i found the first ep back lame & snoozy esp for a mid-season premiere or whatever -

but most recent one was ok? like, pleasingly overwrought i would say. the DSP or whatever is a pretty soft focus Season Threat tho - I want to be feeling v’ger/voyage home probe levels of unknowable cosmic power vibes but it just isn’t landing - although this ep kind of felt like it was building to something i guess? but hard to get real excited about this season, bring back that nutso Disco energy, it was weird but at least it was something

also lol at returning character reveal that leaves me squinting and going “oh yeah i kind of remember that person?” - the second-tier characters are so epically under-written on this show, it is kind of avant garde - like the shuttlecraft spat between beard guy and non-beard guy - I kind of blank as soon as they start talking, because you know it’s an anaemic fifth-priority subplot that will be resolved with no consequences

i have no faith that they'll wrap it up well, but i do respect the turn they've taken with this species 10c. there are good storytelling reasons why humans/vulcans/klingons/romulans/etc. have more or less the same level of technology, but they really should have been running into civilizations that are much more advanced -- and not necessarily friendly -- way more often. (and without turning them into easily thwarted clowns, as voyager did with the borg.)

I think I have a pretty low tolerance for characters acting well below real-life stupidity as a cheap and easy way to raise the stakes and dramatic tension, so I have yet to finish the second episode back.

(but lol at the “Saru’s farewell to beard guy” scene, I couldn’t even remember what his position was - I guess maybe the actor took a break and it was just housekeeping but honestly these guys are so anonymous that it would have been better to just handwave the crew change with one line of dialogue)

that was either reese or bryce iirc. happily, removing one of them means they can no longer have made-up disagreements about strategy

ok so next week i guess they have to work out a way to convert human feelings into fairy dust, then pack it all into a photon torpedo of emotion and fire it into the heart of the CGI thing

then everyone will feel seen and we can finish a season that never really felt like it started

if you look at imdb user ratings you’re going to get exactly what you’re looking for, in my experience

IMDB is bizarrely anti-woke/anti-SJW/anti-anything not white male nerd. They will EVISCERATE any show that big-ups women, POC, assault victims, sci fi shows not using all wite ppl etc. Like to the point where I feel like there's brigading going on?

as probably mentioned upthread, i try and be a painstakingly respectful and humble human but there is something about the scripting of this show that makes me feel like a cranky conservative asshole, maybe this is the true magic of star trek

right!? i was complaing to mr veg last week about how the fuck do they get ~anything~ done or achieve any objectives as part of starfleet when they’re constantly talking out their feelings on every single decision!? i felt like a cranky old boomer lmao

yesterday I got halfway through a bitchy post about how Discovery can be at red alert with shaky camera and smoke and blood on the bridge and an assailant relentlessly hurling crackling death energy at a terrified crew... then Burnham will say "Saru, a moment?" and they'll jump cut to the ready room where everything is soft focus and ferns and water features, and Michael and Saru gently touch each other's upper forearms and express their appreciation for togetherness at this difficult time

then I felt unkind and didn't post the post but I'm posting it now because GEEZ sometimes its like the show is its own SNL Parody (if anyone cared enough about this show to parody it)
