The penguin is not what it seems.

omg! well done :-)

This is the Penguins I saw, the eyes seem to be there, thought the real mascot has a wider beak.

Nicely taken. Got. off to a good start then the trail seemed to go cold as confidence waned, until tomorrow came on in the second half and smashed it in from distance at first time of asking, nae doubt about that one

A view for the Christmas break

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Friday, 24 December 2021 13:17 (two years ago) link

Not sure why I'm thinking this looks British?

StanM, Friday, 24 December 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link

That looks like a number of atations on the Merseyrail network

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 14:48 (two years ago) link

there's only 67 stations :-/

StanM, Friday, 24 December 2021 15:00 (two years ago) link

It's not the first one i thought it might be

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 15:16 (two years ago) link

Which is St Michael's, so that narrows it down a bit

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 15:17 (two years ago) link

And i think Merseyrail colouring is generally yellow rather than blue

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

aren't the blue things a bit... overkill? are the walls protected maybe? monument?

StanM, Friday, 24 December 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

I'd have thought it's a ramp down into a cutting

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 23:05 (two years ago) link

Looking again at the steps it might be a slight optical illusion and we're actually heading down towards the station building

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 24 December 2021 23:08 (two years ago) link

Definitely heading downward. I don't have time at the moment, but there's this if anyone wants to take a stab at it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_underground_stations_of_the_Merseyrail_network

(Sorry if that violates rules! I just think it's an interesting sub-category in and of itself, and I'm not even from the UK)

There are no rules except at Christmas when you have to wear a Santa hat

Guess the city
A station and some railings for you,
In blue
Worked my way through the list
Guess the city
And click around streetview tonight

kinder, Saturday, 25 December 2021 19:30 (two years ago) link

it looks cold and rainy - does that narrow it down?

StanM, Saturday, 25 December 2021 19:36 (two years ago) link

gave up looking at merseyside ones, seem to be mostly yellow rails

Ste, Saturday, 25 December 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

It's definitely England

Alternative Ulsterbus, Sunday, 26 December 2021 02:19 (two years ago) link

Feel like the brick colour is a clue. Complicated, expensive eaves. Loads of trains on the schedule, has to be London surely? But I'm also getting a Sheffieldous vibe

Alternative Ulsterbus, Sunday, 26 December 2021 02:27 (two years ago) link

i feel like it's London but somewhere outer based on the size, but well connected based on the departures board.

board has long names and short names on it. different directions? can't see any tube termini with names that short though, looks like only 4 or 5 letters.

Greater Manchester stations use the blue colour scheme but not finding anything as yet

is it?

StanM, Tuesday, 28 December 2021 14:20 (two years ago) link

Could be Scotland - Scotrail stations have blue all over like that. Feel like the key to this would be finding the route that fits the station name lengths on the screen, but can't be bothered with that right now.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 31 December 2021 03:01 (two years ago) link

It's destinations, I guess, not points on a route.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 31 December 2021 03:04 (two years ago) link

I bet it's Falkirk or Coatbridge Sunnyside. Something like that. If they are cities. Which they're not.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 31 December 2021 03:07 (two years ago) link

I has an instinct of Scotland when I first saw it. But my instincts usually, erm, stinc.

Part II

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Saturday, 1 January 2022 15:23 (two years ago) link

Doesn't look like Scotland to me, still think Greater Manchester feels right but I've checked nearly every station

Expanding my Greater Manchester search to include non-city Stockport has come up with the goods

Davenport it is

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Saturday, 1 January 2022 19:55 (two years ago) link

I thought it might go from the train monitor in the first image, but it's difficult to tell how clear the words are for other people (especially when you already know what they are). How things appear on my laptop screen and monitor screen is pretty different!

What made you expand to the east? The Peak District ish hill in the distance?

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Saturday, 1 January 2022 19:58 (two years ago) link

The second pic solidified my hunch that it was Greater Manchester, I'd been concentrating on Salford and Manchester itself but your recent trend towards towns and, yeah, the hills in the distance made me go back and check Stockport and the outer towns

Fine by me!

two sleeps till brooklyn (ledge), Saturday, 1 January 2022 21:04 (two years ago) link

"City" means several related things, ONLY ONE OF WHICH is along the lines of "settlement awarded so-called city status by arbitrary convention or decree within a given jurisdiction or linguistic pocket of this wide world", ffs. To me it seems entirely obvious that cities which city purists insist on calling towns should also be allowed.

Happy new year to all! I pretty much never post in this thread, but I enjoy it a lot.

New Year, New City

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Monday, 3 January 2022 14:49 (two years ago) link

Feels like it could be anywhere from Southern Europe to Palestine/Israel maybe?

StanM, Monday, 3 January 2022 16:01 (two years ago) link

clutching at straws here:
- no satellite dishes anywhere? They're banned in Iran, Myanmar, Turkmenistan... Don't know if that's a clue?
- maybe the fencing on the bridge over the railroad it a bit excessive? did lots of people kill themselves there or are the trains important (israeli trains through palestine for instance) (don't know why I keep thinking palestine here to be honest)
- extra lights half way up the light posts? (two of them with bike tyres over them) ?
- some of the cars are French brands but they're sold all over the world, aren't they.

StanM, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 14:02 (two years ago) link

Those garbage bins look distinctive. Perhaps designed for a particular type of fully automatic garbage truck? Not sure how to search for that though.

o. nate, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 14:19 (two years ago) link

is that a flag hanging from top floor left, partially behind the pole? or just washing?

blue white red, more? france, holland, paraguay?

This seems to be the dumpster, of Chinese manufacture:

Not sure what "hot sold in Middle East" means? Perhaps a mistranslation of a "hot seller in the Middle East"?

o. nate, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 14:32 (two years ago) link

the train line doesn't look like middle east to me.
