yes! the worst are people that do this in parking garages during peak times.

my favorite parking moment was sitting at a cafe in Paris and watching a tiny car attempt to parallel park in a too small space. Instead of giving up, it rolled back until it locked bumpers with the car behind it, pushed that car backwards until it had enough space to park. I wish people did more of that here.

Calvin Trillin has a similar bit; he claims to have once founded a magazine called "Beautiful Spot: A Magazine of Parking," which lasted for one issue.

that's what you are supposed to do. you wait until no one is coming, then you leave. if you back into the space people are forced to wait behind you. you have to drive backwards either way! backing in is not the right thing to do.

backing out is ime more disruptive. idk where ye can see so much better reversing out of a space but it's def not the easier or quicker way I see it done tbh

Here's the big subtle difference about backing into parking spaces:
• When you pull in frontwards and then back up to leave, the people waiting for you are happy to see you leave. Take all the time you want, buddy, because now I've got a space and my long hard journey is over.
• Whereas if I'm having to stop for a minute every. single. time someone ahead of me gets a space, I would never shop JC Penney's again.
― pplains, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 14:54 (two years ago) link
Fwiw, I'm mostly most annoyed by it in small parking garages, esp ones that serve a typical 9-5 work force, where there isn't room to maneuver or any other aisles to use and you just have to sit and wait for Dipshit McMagaman to spend three minutes trying to squeeze his F150 into a tiny spot while reversing.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 15:45 (two years ago) link
the parking lot at the local grocery store always turns into an utter clusterfuck when this happens, and yes, more often than not it is an oversize truck that's attempting this maneuver.

pivoting, this one is a theatre "semantics" one but one that can apply to any assignment in which your availability needs to be known:
when you get asked for 'conflicts', when there isn't actually a schedule yet.
If there's no schedule, I quite literally can't give you a 'conflict'. if you're asking me to tell you dates/times I am for sure unavailable and when I am available, I'm giving you my 'availability', and then you're using it to build a schedule.
and tbh I get annoyed at this because if you say "we'll always rehearse Monday - Thursday", I don't have to tell you about every day/time I have anything going over 1-2 months, and I'll know what days I shouldn't make other plans. whereas if it's completely open, I'm more likely to just make plans whenever the fuck I feel like and then we wind up having lots of people missing everyday.

bin day. everyone puts their binbags out the front for roadside collection. only the cable company gets there first and closes the road so the bin lorry can't get down it, meaning the garbage goes uncollected this week
still, the foxes will be happy.

The guy who owns the RV park we live in changed over the bigger dumpster to a smaller dumpster, probably to save money. Except that it's overflowing every week.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 19:49 (two years ago) link
It feels as if overflowing garbage bins have been lined up on the sidewalk of my block permanently for about two months now, due to holidays, snow days, intentional work slowdowns by the sanitation workers, and the street being blocked for whatever reason. I envy places that have more sensible garbage collection practices, this is ridiculous.

it has been 3 days of angle grinding and pneumatic drilling and i don't think the cable guys are done yet (although they have moved down the road about 20 yards so it's not quite so loud anymore)
tonight the lightweight plastic fences have all blown over so they cover the paths (the bit of the paths not covered in binbags anyway). i can hear people climbing over them but nobody's thought to just kick them into the road to clear the way for everyone else.

I can't stand people that overshare on social media and yet somehow still play it coy. Kind of like a second cousin to people that humblebrag. For example, I have a friend that posted a picture on Facebook last week that was basically someone's legs in a hospital gown, a POV shot taken by someone lying in a hospital bed, with takeout sitting on a nearby table, and the text something like "TGIF, am I right? Sigh." Someone in the comments even asked "what happened!?" and her response was literally "the usual." I mean, come on! It's not even clear whose legs they were. Hers? Her husband's? Any of her three kids?

I used to have a friend that got off on cosplaying like they were in danger in mundane scenarios, similarly. I unfollowed/unfriended her after this one instance where she typed a status indicating she got on the Subway in the afternoon at a busy time, and there was a creepy guy there wearing a mask (guessing like a balaclava or something, covering his mouth and nose, pre-pandemic). Over time from her comments it became evidence he wasn't actually DOING anything but minding his own business.
but she kept talking about how uncomfortable he made her because of the mask, and got all of her friends to say "omg are you ok? do we need to call the police?", and she was responding to and liking all of these posts within seconds of each other, giving updates that weren't really "updates". it was pretty obvious from her context that she was the only one bothered by the person, as she had indicated it was fairly crowded, but didn't give details indicating he was actually doing anything, nor that anybody else had approached him.
this went on for like a half hour, with her actively liveblogging a dude wearing a mask just sitting there, talking about how nervous and scared she was, until one of her friends finally said "if you're that freaked out, maybe get off Facebook and do something about it?", she finally comes back fifteen minutes later to say she did talk to security after she got off the train and that this person was a regular and I guess a germphobe or something, hence the mask. and that it was nbd.

Used to be somewhat good for checking out other people's opinions on books I had just grabbed from charity shops etc . & keeping a database of what i had bought. It is an Amazon product so probably one I should be avoiding. But was somewhat useful.Maybe still is, just hate the interface i don't seem to be able to get away from right now.

Customer service on a gas supplier I'm leaving. Endless hold which rang off after 20 minutes waiting with my phone on loudspeaker a few weeks ago.I phoned again to try to pay off a bit of what I owed as balance on leaving. Get through to sales Dept who proceed to put me on hold. I gave up after like 10 minutes anyway. Wanted to make sure I had part paid off and didn't have a large direct debit coming off when I'm broke.Stupid place has only just set up a website account system that you can pay through. So I am stuck trying to pay this way. Glad I'm leaving but I think I am going to run into trouble over this leaving balance. I don't even get to see what it is until physical bill arrives.
Plus energy prices just rose as of the 1st of May quite massively. 27% roughly. Glad I swapped to a different firm on the 3rd. But this is going to be a pain when I'm already broke.Looks like Ireland followed a rise that UK had a month earlier. Rising costs and inflation all round.Plus had slipped out of contract at some point so had no reduction in cost up til then. So did manage to get a deal that means I am paying a lower tariff than pre the rise just shame I didn't get on top of that before. Reduction will only last at rate for duration of this contract so assume standard rate going to be even higher by next year. Partially assuming Eastern European war feeding into this too. So could somebody just erase Putin or sumfin.

I would like to nominate 'things that topple'. Prime suspects are usually located in the bathroom and the kitchen, particularly on the draining board. So, the electric toothbrush, which only needs me to whisper near it to fall over and set off a chain reaction of other toppling bastards, and essentially everything on the draining board: cutlery holder, I'm looking at you, always spilling your guts all over said draining board and into the sink, and also stupid top-heavy saucepans, who cause inevitable LOUD toppling excess.

this is where i complain about microsoft word's new (?) auto-fill feature. i type 15 and a gray "U.S.C" appears. you can hit tab and it will type it! but not U.S.C., you have to supply your own .
an older feature is when you write approx it gives you a free . so i end up with approx.. thanks so much!

My tv refusing to provide the English subtitles for the 5th episode of Russian Doll. They showed up on my computer easily enough. Just would prefer a larger screen. Odd that, I tried to cycle through the options on the tv subtitle listing no sign of them. Which led to checking order on the computer. Clearly there.Ho hum did eventually settle for the monitor screen. Hope that is only necessary for that one episode.

& checking the file on the memory stick on my computer it recognises the presence of a subtitle in English. So not sure why it didn't on the tv.Assumed it somehow hadn't transferred or something but no its just skipping things that are there. Hope that isn't something that repeats with other files.

think my last convo with a friend fits IA (note by "I can't understand you", they mean 'it's muffled/jumbled/quiet/hard to hear', not me simply not elocuting properly)
Friend: I can't understand you
Me: (repeats self)
Friend: I can't understand you, you're not talking into your mic.
Me: my mouth is in front of the microphone, it might be a reception issue
Friend: No, it's the microphone. I can hear you now
Me: I didn't move the phone at all.
Friend: Now I can't understand you again. I don't see how it could be 'reception'. you're the only friend I have this problem with.
Me: I....don't know what to tell you, I haven't moved the phone at all.
Friend: Ok now I can hear you.
(10 minutes pass, we resume talking)
Friend: I can't understand you.
Me: (tries to repeat what I said louder and slower)
Friend: (interrupting) I still don't understand you.
Me: I haven't moved the phone at all - you keep saying I'm not talking into the mic but the phone has been in the same place and I'm talking at the same volume and one moment you say you can hear me, the next you can't.
Friend: You're getting very defensive, I don't appreciate it, I'm going to let you go.
