Didn't know the word, finally cheated by looking up a list of kingdoms, finding protista, and guessing that protist was a word.

Lily Dale, Saturday, 14 May 2022 15:32 (two years ago) link

#37 was https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protist which i don't think anybody got

koogs, Saturday, 14 May 2022 16:02 (two years ago) link

I got 37, mostly without cheating (I googled something, entered biological even though I'd already figured out the not animal, plant, fungus angle).

I solved today's Redactle (#38) in 98 guesses with an accuracy of 62.24%. Played at https://www.redactle.com/

58, 62%
was aiming more for real world religious figures/history rather than foundational

8 for me too

I kind of like it better when it drags on for a bit, staring at the blobs to discern sentence structure feels meditative, except when it's a word I've never heard of obv

y'all are amazing. I was gonna brag about getting #38 in 19 guesses ... the fact my name is Sarah was a factor in my success tbh; I didn't actually guess my name

153, 66% - I knew blood sucking insect pretty quickly but I didn't think of using bug... also didn't know that bed bugs were blood suckers.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 15 May 2022 19:38 (two years ago) link

#39 in 7. Inevitable comedown after yesterday's 1. Annoying, I actually guessed it after 3, but stupidly got excited and typed the whole things as one, which then registered as bedbug, then before I clocked what was happening I typed bed bugs plural which became bedbugs, so two turns wasted through carelessness

Alba, Sunday, 15 May 2022 19:41 (two years ago) link

Not going to look at this thread again before playing though - I think koogs' "i am surprised that [show hidden text] have a wikipedia entry..." helped me a bit even without the hidden text!

149 guesses, 54% accuracy -- unlike puzzle #37 where I had a clear idea of what the thing was, but didn't know the word, it took me over 100 guesses to even get a sense of the general vicinity of what the thing was.

sarahell, Sunday, 15 May 2022 20:09 (two years ago) link

oh wow, sorry koogs - your post was a joke. It helped me inadvertently because I thought you’d actually done today’s!

blargh 222 just didn't think of it I did try "bite" and "insect" halfway through and it showed kind of something but "bites" and "insects" would have got me there in a snap

alba i think you're ready to go pro

âś–, Monday, 16 May 2022 01:03 (two years ago) link

i stupidly cheated at the end assuming it must be some bloodsucking insect that i'd never heard of - couldn't let go of the thought that it'd be the same 3 letter word repeating like "tse tse"

âś–, Monday, 16 May 2022 01:07 (two years ago) link

I got thrown a bit because Africa and South America were the only continents I hit and I don't think of bed bugs as having an original habitat.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 16 May 2022 01:14 (two years ago) link

#38 was a 'did not participate' - weekend stuff just completely in the way. Fitted in 15 guesses, & given a favourable domain and what I already had would have got there under 100.

Looking at #39 after next coffee.

woof, Monday, 16 May 2022 09:04 (two years ago) link

#39 in 18 insects by 14, then fly, ant, bug. Long pause staring at the first 3 letter word and wondering if this was an American thing that I hadn't heard of before remembering the existence of these little shits.

Nice work again Alba - and how'd you get yesterday's in one? (Amazing btw - I don't think that's been marvelled at anything like enough). The best way in I noticed was the chapter-and-verse stuff but even if I'd played with focus I'd have been homing in for a few guesses.

woof, Monday, 16 May 2022 09:53 (two years ago) link

Thanks woof. For Abraham it was the same old tell as with prophecy that it was something biblical from the chapter verse punctuation, yeah. So I was looking for "Christianity"/"Christian"/"Judaism" in the intro to see how closely it was something biblical and doing that the second sentence looked like a succession of “In Christianity … in Judaism … in Islam”. There seemed a good change that the the two-letter word after each was “he”, so was thinking of big (judging by the length of the article) seven-letter name figures in the … Abrahamic religions and he came to mind shortly after I began fretting that I wasn't sure how to spell Ezekiel.

In a way I'm more pleased with #39 where I had a feeling the last word of the first sentence was 'night' because I couldn't think of another word that length would follow 'at' as a final word early on. I'd wasted my first two goes on world and war I think but I had a feeling from looking at what turned out to be the 'Society and culture' section that it was a non-literary thing that had a small imprint in the arts and that lone quotation in the subsection above the two books would be something like a children's rhyme. So when 'night' popped up in that, the bed bugs saying leapt out at me.

I'm very much expecting another protist-style blowout today to bring me back down to earth.

#40 180 / 47%

I really ought to reorient my approach because I think I'm going too specific a lot of the times, which results in a lot of dead-ends. Today, I got stuck on countries and didn't think to try food till 151.

#40 in 77 guesses, I think I don't care enough about getting the answer as quickly as possible, because I generally start with categorical type words or really common words just to have more blanks filled in, to have a better sense of the text? Anyway now i am hungry

exactly! This is probably why our results tend to be in the same range (except for when you totally get it and I am too dense).
I started guessing food related stuff when I guessed "French" and there were significant results. Like, what are significant things that came from France? ... food

#40 in 56 - disappointed but not much to say here. Poking around that French stuff early, but my brain was heading towards clothes, gambling and law as areas of French vocab borrowings. Don't hit food till 36 and keep getting pulled away when associated words aren't getting great results.
