since the 00s it has increasingly simply een an online insult -- and occasional an ironised online self-identification -- which has broken fully free of uk secatrian parochialism and could often honestly just be swapped out for "bot" (or "trot") for a particular kind of teenage channer trolling complete with left-informed wojacks and etc. it no longer applies to membership of anything resembling a political party of organisation that a 56-er tankie would recognise as left politics at all -- and you more and more hear it as a dismissal in the mouths of ppl not remotely on the left (at which point it doesn't really overlap with the meanings and implications a lefty with a sense of history probably hears in it)

I first learned it in anarchist circles as an insulting reference to Maoists, and never having looked the etymology of the term up, always assumed it had to do with Tiananmen Square. There's an anarchist group here in Philly, I think, that has put up some stickers that have the iconic shot of the tank and the man in Tiananmen, with the words "ALWAYS AGAINST THE TANKS," which has a nice if obvious double meaning.

i'm writing about a complicated situation where i'm not necessarily in the right, like, i'm deliberately making myself vulnerable and not portraying myself as someone who is wise and knows everything, and you're asking me if i might possibly be wrong here, yeah, that's the underlying point i'm trying to get it, i _don't_ know everything and i _do_ get it wrong sometimes and there is a good argument that i got it wrong here. i'm definitely open to, like, particularly if someone who _is_ of romani origin feels _comfortable_, like, nobody's _obligated_ to do it, but if somebody with lived experience that i don't feels comfortable educating me on how i got it wrong, i'm really open to that!
