sarahell, Tuesday, 28 June 2022 19:18 (three years ago)

I understand and agree with all that, I just didn’t get the part of the post where you decided not to say anything because you didn’t think there were any Romani people there. Surely it is still racist either way?

xps yeah sorry, I’m really not interested in having a go at you, just that part of the post made me not understand that you meant. Sorry about this.

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Tuesday, 28 June 2022 21:24 (three years ago)

no worries, i don't take it that way. i just used to be the kinda person where it was VERY IMPORTANT that everybody UNDERSTAND what i'm ACTUALLY SAYING and nowadays it's more, you know, i do my best but if i don't always communicate well it's not the end of the world. we cool.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 28 June 2022 22:31 (three years ago)

Thank you, I felt really bad about my posts reading back and I was too hard on you. That attitude is a better way to be.

it's amazing how you do nothing but restate the obvious, yet still think that it's somehow worth posting

keep waiting for the big breakthrough so we can all sing Sondheim tunes at the bar and feel better

Herby Dutch Baby (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 2 July 2022 18:21 (three years ago)

a spin off peppered with pop psychiatry and privilege. this thread is Frasier.

Herby Dutch Baby (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 2 July 2022 19:00 (three years ago)

Mark s refuses to watch Frasier because of Daphne. True story.

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Saturday, 2 July 2022 19:26 (three years ago)

which Sondheim? ... I regret that my life choices have fucked up my voice so I can't do Amy's part in "Not Getting Married Today" anymore, but I could likely do a pretty stellar version of "Ladies Who Lunch"

sarahell, Saturday, 2 July 2022 19:44 (three years ago)

I mean Daphne's bad but really?

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2022 19:56 (three years ago)

Like Fraze himself is often more unbearable

*rewinds many many eps in my head*

Ok mark has a point

Tbf this was a couple of drinks in but he was very vehemently against this

a rare misstep in Jane Leeves's stellar career

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:03 (three years ago)

I don't like her either tbh

Eavis Has Left the Building (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:03 (three years ago)

Many of the actors who play Moon family members do not have specifically Mancunian English accents: Anthony LaPaglia and Richard E. Grant, who portray two of Daphne's brothers, were not even born in the United Kingdom (LaPaglia is Australian, and Grant was born in Eswatini). This apparent discrepancy is never addressed on the show, but may be taken as an in-joke (see below).

😬

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:06 (three years ago)

"many"?????

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:20 (three years ago)

think the word they were looking for was "none"

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:20 (three years ago)

THE Richard E. Grant?

Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:36 (three years ago)

I didn't know he was Swazi, but Mancunian-on-Frasier aside (I don't have any memory it) we're not seriously suggesting Grant can't do any convincing born-in-the-UK accents are we?

rob, Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:43 (three years ago)

Can't really imagine him pulling off a Manc accent tbf.

Eavis Has Left the Building (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:46 (three years ago)

yeah I agree with that, I'm just a) wondering about the implications of the thing gyac quoted about "not UK born" like how much does that really matter/explain? and b) wondering if I've missed that Grant can't even do a posh English accent, which would be surprising to me but I certainly don't have the ear for noticing it

rob, Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:50 (three years ago)

He's not really an African.

Eavis Has Left the Building (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 July 2022 20:53 (three years ago)

Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs (Mancunian Blues)

Herby Dutch Baby (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 2 July 2022 23:21 (three years ago)

She is really terrible and the accent isn’t even the half of it tbh

Wiggum Dorma (wins), Sunday, 3 July 2022 09:21 (three years ago)

grant's wikipedia has a paragraph on his accent: tl;dr he grew up in a colonial subculture where the posh english of the 40s and 50s was still the norm until the 80s, and when he arrived in the uk in the 80s his resting speech reflected the pre-shift voicing (unspoken point: there was a noticeable vowel shift in british poshspeak in the 50s and 60s)

mark s, Sunday, 3 July 2022 09:35 (three years ago)

Yes but what are your thoughts on Daphne

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Sunday, 3 July 2022 09:58 (three years ago)

there was a noticeable vowel shift in Mancunian accents in 1990s Seattle

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 3 July 2022 09:59 (three years ago)

"they're callin again"

mark s, Sunday, 3 July 2022 10:02 (three years ago)

I think the reason Daphne is bad, increasingly so as the show progresses, is because at the beginning she's intentionally one-dimensional and unknowable, the joke about Niles being secretly in love with her is predicated on him barely knowing her and not having any real connection with her, she's like Kramer in the Seinfeld or Jim In Taxi, this person who pops up an makes quirky non-sequiturs. When she becomes part of the family they get rid of the quirks and she just ends up being one-dimensional in a dull way.

I don't mind Daphne's family of cockney Mancunians though, in the same way you wouldn't complain about Inspector Clouseau or Rene from Allo Allo not being convincing portrayals of Frenchmen

soref, Sunday, 3 July 2022 10:42 (three years ago)

as a general rule of thumb marriages of long-running sitcom characters = the death of the show

glaring exception being Bob and Thelma obv

bury my heart in wounded kieth (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 3 July 2022 10:52 (three years ago)

anyway last night i came to the conclusion that good Frazier = Roz, Niles, Martin, some of the chorus, bad Frazier = the rest
