The name comes from the gate merely "kissing" (touching) the inside of the enclosure.

What nonsense. As I tell all my friends whenever we come across such a gate, it comes from the fact that you have to give the person in front a kiss before they allow you to pass through.

what kind of track is that? BMX would be partly dirt, right?

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:27 (two years ago) link

Not necessarily, see e.g. the last Olympics! I've been searching for (grim) pump track (wales).

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Monday, 8 August 2022 15:28 (two years ago) link

oh right, pump track is a variety too - thx

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:29 (two years ago) link

thanks for the dn

I feel like that fancy rectangular garbage thing (if it is one) is pretty distinctive maybe, no?

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:34 (two years ago) link

do the wind turbines mean "near a coast" ?

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:35 (two years ago) link

Not necessarily, they're all over the country here. Maybe the bin has some distinguishing features up close but it wouldn't look out of place to me anywhere in the UK.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Monday, 8 August 2022 15:37 (two years ago) link

okay, I hoped my questions would help but they don't :-)

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:39 (two years ago) link

I don't know, it feels very flat for Wales - unless I've happened to only have clicked on more hilly parts

StanM, Monday, 8 August 2022 15:43 (two years ago) link

I've definitely seen those bins in Wales. This looks like it could be somewhere like Caerphilly.

nate woolls, Monday, 8 August 2022 21:07 (two years ago) link

i agree this might be wales, but i've seen those bins all over. very generic uk bin imo.

That's an awkward gate for a BMX track - tricky getting your bike through it. If it's Wales, then there can't be that many BMX tracks in Welsh cities, but buggered if I'm going to look through them all.

Not that it helps really, but in the mid-distance in the 2nd pic there's a playing field with lights, which may correspond to the seating and lights of the first pic.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 01:57 (two years ago) link

you can see the building from pic 1 (and the playing field) in the background of pic 2.

micah, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 03:17 (two years ago) link

its possible that the kissing gate, while normally meant for cattle, has been adopted here to keep motorbikes off the pump track.

micah, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 03:18 (two years ago) link

nah I was just riffing on the design of the bin!

that’s what you think!

this is hard

StanM, Thursday, 11 August 2022 19:53 (two years ago) link

Bearsden has a pump track that looks right but Street View has a hedge rather than a fence. Also another one in Greater Glasgow that has the right buildings but downhill instead of uphill.

definitely a niche one for the UK crew. without a bit of knowledge of English non-league football teams you'd be looking for it forever (tho with that knowledge i feel i should have found it sooner, was clear from the first pic that there was a football ground and it was prob key)

This is also the very first time I hear about a place called Tow Law. Was the parking violation solution invented there?

StanM, Friday, 12 August 2022 12:08 (two years ago) link

Wikipedia on Tow Law Town (the football club) has this line: "However, not all of the club's fans are hooligans"

Do any Britishers want to talk about what that part of England is like? I have my guesses but maybe I'm being a dumb American

It looks pretty bleak tbh

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Friday, 12 August 2022 16:36 (two years ago) link

Though also rather pretty. It seems "bleak but pretty countryside surrounding" is a descriptor of many small cities and towns in the UK and everywhere else, too.

right that was my impression for sure

After looking at way too many pump tracks to do me good, I am glad someone got it. at times I was near and plenty of time very far away.

I introduced this game on another board as they are a good group to play it.

Someone got this on picture 1, within an hour.

horizontal, Saturday, 13 August 2022 01:16 (two years ago) link

You're obviously dealing with pros. How did they get it so quickly? Through the ground?

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Saturday, 13 August 2022 02:43 (two years ago) link

She was as a surprised as anyone. It is a soccer board. her words were “I was only checking Tow Law because it’s the right type of town and their ground is famously on a hill”.

They are from the North East UK, so the famously can be treated with a suitable amount of salt.

horizontal, Saturday, 13 August 2022 22:25 (two years ago) link

Well, "right type of town" is the kind of intuition that goes a long way

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 07:23 (two years ago) link

The lighthouse (if that's what it is) looks pretty distinctive and could be the key. I see a couple of towers in the distance that look like cathedral steeples, and a couple of other steeple-like constructions. I'm guessing it's a coastal city somewhere in Northern Europe, on the North or Baltic Seas or something.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 07:49 (two years ago) link

There are a lot of striped lighthouses out there, I'm learning

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 08:03 (two years ago) link

Other distinctive factors: strange fin-like thing centre-left; incredibly long (but well-trimmed) hedge; apart from a red people-carrier, all the cars seem to be white, what are the odds of that? Row of flags has me thinking we're at one of those "international" hotels, so maybe the white cars are rentals.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 08:11 (two years ago) link

Man centre-right with flaming red hair - although the apartment blocks on the left don't look too Irish to me

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 08:17 (two years ago) link

Ostend / Oostende / Ostende? Looks like Lange Nelle the lighthouse, those stripes in particular.

Tim, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 08:23 (two years ago) link

Just beat me to it! Based on the flatness of the terrain I googled Ostend lighthouse and got Lange Nelle...
