would you trade it all in for a place with no calls, ever, and a large room of cubes with 3 other people who barely ever speak? Beyond this room I'm lucky to get a "good morning" returned. Everybody just checked out.

this place gives me the willies and i can't believe i've been here 4 years.. well kind of 2 given all the pandemic interruptions. I hope it hasn't turned me into a huge(r) weirdo. Somehow I've put together 3 job interviews over the next week, a couple even relevant to some schooling I did. wish me luck

2 months and 7 or 8 additional interviews later... one offer, for the highest paying gig of the lot. Was I selling myself short? My resume is a real grab bag of stuff... I have to spin a yarn in every interview I do for how this makes me the best candidate for X work. This job should get me back on track in a field I have worked in before and I'll re-write the resume to be more focused.

Should be a whole new raft of madness, and I imagine I'll be posting here at some point again. But I just wanted to stop in and say

NEVER SURRENDER

oh i done found em.

lmao, IT sent a trainee someone else's monitor. one was named Antoinette, the other was named Annette. last names not at all similar.

manager dryly writes "can you see why IT might have been confused" when we report it.

Yes, I will ask both trainees to apologize to having similar first names. no idea what they were thinking having those names.

we have someone in training who told us he needed to go to part-time DURING training (he was hired full-time) as he's going to college. when his manager asked how that would even work, since that would mean missing half a day of class every day for the next few weeks, he expressed surprise, saying he thought he could work his 8 hours whenever he wanted during the day, instead of, y'know, having to be in the class for 8 hours.

always feel good when one of our hiring managers derisively screams "just get rid of her" in response to a report of someone we hired having chronic connection issues to our VPN, which IT and her ISP are both blaming the other party.

yeah, cos it's her fault, and her being fired won't leave her without money to live off of.

this is btw the same person who eyerolled at me for the payroll issue before relenting as I was about to go to HR.

likewise, IT is getting beat up today due to a poor game of telephone.

"Brenda's got a ticket open, ticket #1234"
*one hour later*
"Brenda's ticket was resolved and closed, she said everything is working now".
*one hour later*
"welp, spoke too soon - it's come back"
'ok, i'll create a new ticket for her and we'll call her'

*they try and call twice, nobody answers the phone*

in another chat room

"Brenda is still having issues, ticket #1234 needs to be looked at, nobody has called her"
'that ticket is closed'
"What? she just opened it, why was it closed"
'IT has got to stop closing Tier 1 tickets prematurely'

they not only didn't, but the person they were helping ignored their calls too.

it feels like larger companies / organizations have the "luxury" of throwing other departments under the bus, so it isn't as personal ... as opposed to the various places I work where it's individuals doing this to other individuals ...

Yesterday:
co-worker: complains about Rhonda blaming him for not having something done that he doesn't remember committing to having done this week
me: ugh, I'm sorry
co-worker: you're lucky you're not on these calls, though that's because Rhonda doesn't like you
me: oh? I didn't know that Rhonda didn't like me. I just figured I was excluded because I don't have a central role in this project and she wants to have fewer people in the meetings
co-worker: oh, maybe. It's okay though if she doesn't like you. She doesn't like Tom either. Or Nate.

On Thursday, all of our folders and files started disappearing rapidly from Dropbox, like - everything just *poof*! I immediately start searching "Dropbox ransomware" and feeling relief that I'm not in charge of IT or data security here. Turns out someone who reports to me wanted to free up disk space on their laptop, not realizing what deleting that Dropbox backup would mean since they were synching....

We got everything back in slightly over 24 hours but so many permissions need reapplied and so much panic.

Jaq, Saturday, 27 August 2022 18:27 (two years ago) link

I sort of hate using Dropbox. A place I freelance for (more specifically one designer I work with there) wants me using the desktop version (it’s my machine, not one they’ve provided) vs the browser version. He seems to think it’s superior - but I don’t want to suddenly have a bunch of disc space vanish because some dork throw a pile of 2 gig files in there, or, worse, accidentally save another clients stuff into the wrong folder and then have the entire team in possession of confidential materials.
He never misses an opportunity to be passive aggressive about it - but he’s largely powerless.

so this morning...

*I get told the class that we were told would run 11:30 - 8:00 pm ET, and had confirmed for weeks, should have been 9:00 - 5:30 pm ET all along, and can I change it.

*One of the people I was given as an instructor says he has no idea about the assignment, I must have wrong person, etc etc, and nobody can confirm if they meant someone else with a similar name.

*Another person that is co-teaching a class which ends in 5 days has PTO 8/30 - 9/1, and her manager told the person who communicated the name to us, but that person didn't tell us the PTO days, so we found out just now. and the trainer didn't tell their co-trainer about the PTO and actually agreed to teach topics on those days she won't even be here.

*One person who we were volunteered for training had to withdraw because they had never seen the technology they'd be training people on (???).

the reason I'm relatively chill about it now is because when I do a relatively mediocre job of keeping things together, everybody will feel bad and give me another reward for 'dealing with their mess' that I can exchange for a gift card to some restaurant.

I like free food.

xpost Thermo, I'd have those same concerns w/ using Dropbox. wouldn't that raise red flags with your company's security team?

and the worms, they entered his ass (Neanderthal), Monday, 29 August 2022 15:20 (two years ago) link

weirdly, no. i used to work there full time years ago, and their IT department were the most uptight, annoying obstacles to doing my job (in one instance literally dictating what fonts I could and - more importantly – could not use). i guess maybe with covid they had to be sedated so that they could get some workable solution to thousands of people working remotely. i dunno.
i already got them to buy me a bunch of external storage, if they really want to have a folder on my machine that is shared with everyone, I'm going to make them send me a dedicated computer (and i have very expensive needs)! otherwise, my computer, my rules.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 29 August 2022 15:30 (two years ago) link

xp Thermo, Neando -- what I tend to do (because I've been in this situation with Dropbox and Google Drive) is just have a separate folder that is more or less a backup (and also contains work in progress that isn't at a point where it would be shared with the group or client) that doesn't sync with the shared folder. Last year, one of my clients had a group member who had shared one folder with a third party, didn't check the permissions on it, and the third party deleted the entire Google Drive, thinking they were just deleting their copy.

there are a ton of common names for our partner employees in India, but everybody has their own email address/company ID, so it's not hard to keep them apart.

Nonetheless, they keep screwing it up. so I was supposed to prepare a learner to teach a class this week. His name was given, and he had three names, and he was the only person listed that way in the system. I wasn't given his ID or email. he immediately said he thought I had the wrong person, and so my first thought was "ok, I've contacted the wrong person".

so I go back and check and during the discussion yesterday, they list his employee ID. I look it up - same person I contacted. so nope, can't be mistaken identity.

but nope, the person who shared the employee ID gave the wrong employee ID. so I get feedback that I contacted the wrong person.

NO FUCKBRAINS, YOU GAVE ME THE WRONG CONTACT INFO. I pushed back pretty hard on this one.

The warehouse is 2.5 hours from my house, I will need to leave earlier and arrive home later than I would for a normal workday and spend 5 hours of my Friday sitting in traffic.

Some treat.

kinda curious how a "warehouse tour" constitutes a treat? ...

and here we have some pallets stored on industrial shelving anchored to the ground. And this is a pallet jack and our new forklift. This forklift has volume control for the beeping sound it makes when you put it in reverse. Over here is where we store the kitty litter to pour around the forklift in case it leaks. ... And over here, we have new shelving, note on this shelving we have plywood laid down so things don't fall through the slats of the pallets ...

Yesterday on a team call, my manager asked me to pull together some data from salesforce.com to help count up the number of sales opportunities that came through our different lines of business over the last year. This is a very normal and straightforward request for me as I am the data and analytics guy on the team. However, one of my teammates who is constantly on my shit about my reports and data for god-knows-what reason, immediately piped in and said he could help me with finding the data in salesforce and then I could put it together in excel since he doesn't know as much about pivot tables and such. Seeing as I was a salesforce.com admin for many years, ran countless reports out of salesforce, and have pulled similar data to this request many times, I said thanks but I have it under control.

So I very quickly pull down the data needed, pop it all in a spreadsheet, create a couple large pivot tables, and send it off to the team. Now here's where I probably made some bad choices, that I could have thought through more. As the tables were large enough that they couldn't fully fit on an average sized computer screen at 100% resolution, I decided to freeze the header rows so that they would be visible as you scroll down the table and you could tell what each column represents. I maybe should have thought through how this could look confusing.

So this morning, said co-worker fires off an urgent email to the team asking why the totals on my pivot table don't add up, the numbers in each column were far below the total values, he included a screen shot of my tables with his own totals underneath in red that were many thousands lower than the totals I presented. He then goes into a very lengthy and detailed analysis of the numbers based entirely off of the totals he added in red.

Now of course, anyone on here with a passing knowledge of excel can probably spot what the issue was: he was only looking at the bottom half of my tables and didn't know to scroll up to see the rest of them. It is actually impossible in excel to have a pivot table where the subtotals do not add up to the totals. So now there's a whole mess of analysis out there based on faulty numbers. A simple IM or phone call could've cleared this up very quickly, but instead the approach was to publicly call into question my data, when I am presumably the expert on this stuff.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 16 September 2022 16:40 (two years ago) link

If he's a peer and tried to undercut you, would reply with an e-mail screencap tip showing the r/h scroll bar, indicating how much content the file had and where in the range the current view is. Not sure how he added a row of his totals without noticing the header row staying static while underlying data shifted. Freezing header rows is standard in my job. Maybe a helpful URL to your work's Excel training files for extra "ummm..." subtext.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Friday, 16 September 2022 17:21 (two years ago) link

he seems to have it figured out now. the bigger issue for me is why not first ask me directly about it rather than doing all this work based on faulty assumptions about my job competence that just makes it all more confusing and makes us both look bad.

xp - that reminds me of a guy I work with who always, ALWAYS assumes bad intent and isn't afraid to blast his baseless conspiracy thinking all over the place and it drives me insane.

Most recent example was a coworker in another department who sent an email with several numbered attachments, one of which was missing. This guy immediately forwards the email to a list of around 25 people, including some fairly senior leaders, to the effect of, "why aren't they sharing all the information? it seems like they have something to hide", of course not copying the original sender.

Not even five minutes after that, the original coworker sends the missing attachment with a, "whoops, just saw I forgot one of the attachments, here you go" email. Of course the guy who sent the accusatory email is now completely silent, no apology, no thank you, just leaving his weird accusation hanging out there.

I know the majority of people I encounter are used to him pulling this shit and kind of roll their eyes, but I'm so annoyed that no one ever calls him out to his face about it (unfortunately I'm well below him on the chain, so I can't really do anything about it either).

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2022 19:51 (two years ago) link

they're definitely a 'missing stair', it sounds like. we had one of those, who was toxic, accused everyone of malfeasance and claimed she was the hardest worker on the team and being mistreated, not to mention she said not very veiled racist shit loudly on the floor once. they wanted to let her go for years, yet it took two years before someone finally took the steps. and she was rich, married to a well-off husband, and she routinely bragged about how she didn't need the money, that she did the job for the 'love of customer service' (???), so it wasn't a bit of mercy.

idk if it's because it's just easier to pretend someone annoying doesn't exist, or if people actually are fearful of those who are insistent on creating their own reality/stoking fires, but it seems people like the one you described always seem to do what they do without repercussion.

i eat ass with a knife and fork (Neanderthal), Friday, 16 September 2022 20:10 (two years ago) link

I had one colleague always trying to get me in trouble for shit, like one time she forwarded an email that I deliberately left the director off of because I needed to understand the whole picture before I looped them in, and as a result, I got humiliated on a call by the director who said he "didn't wanna ever see anybody leave him off of important emails again". also tried to rat on me because she didn't like something my direct report did, and then, the final straw was during our Debrief meeting w/ our client, she went into the slide I was responsible for editing and snuck in an edit to my slide without telling me, adding a criticism of my dept in the "areas of opportunity".

i actually blew up and called her out via email and CCed the director about how I was tired of her undercutting me and secretly updating something she wasn't even authorized to touch, and she gave me a phony-baloney apology but I felt a lot better afterwards.

Slowly being driven up the wall by a coworker who insists that she be the main character of our work lives every day. She used to be really friendly and generally easy to get along with, someone with whom others of us could vent shared frustrations. But slowly, over the last year or so, it's become her show and there just isn't room for anyone else.

Every slight, frustration, irritant, whatever she puts right out on us. If we aren't in the same room with her, it will be a wall of texts to our three person group chat about how irritated and upset she is. If we are near, she'll come over to our desks and unload it all. And I'm not judging, I absolutely 100% get the need to vent to the coworkers suffering similar annoyances and irritants. But it's a one-way street with her, once she unloads it, she shuts off and ignores anything we share that doesn't include her.

I've kind of been sensing this for a few months now, but over the last few weeks it has really been crystallized for me and the one other coworker (I'll call C) that used to really like her.

Last week, Tuesday, she sent both C and I dozens of frustrated texts about how she was left out of a meeting, about how she feels disrespected, about being ignored, etc. I get it, both myself and C did our best to commiserate and be a sounding board. Thursday C got a really nasty email about something that wasn't even her job and texted us to vent. I responded, but nothing from the other coworker. Not a single response all day. The next morning C talked to her in person and asked if she had offended her in some way since she didn't respond. All she said was, "I have no time for your negativity right now, I have a lot on my plate". Which, okay, sometimes we all need boundaries, at least she was clear. But two hours later our boss forgot to include her in a meeting invite, which triggered another avalanche of texts to C and I about how frustrated she was. Given her earlier comments, I wasn't sure how to even respond so I just let it go (as did C, apparently). Half an hour later she texts us, "did you guys not read my texts? I'm really frustrated and I feel like you aren't supporting me".

So, yeah, all judgments aside, clearly not someone I can count on to be a good work friend and, to be perfectly honest, it's worth all the work and minefield navigating that would require. So I've really scaled back on interacting with her about anything that isn't directly work related, but she still came up to me this morning again to vent about something else. I kind of brushed her off about a deadline I have (which had the added benefit of being true!), but I'm trying to figure out how to extricate myself further without being a total dick about it. It's still a small group in our office pod and like it or not, I'm stuck with her 15 feet away from me 30-40 hours a week.

I'm here for you if you want/need to vent about this crazy-making place, but if you are going to shut off when I need the same, sorry, I'm not going to absorb that all for you.

No, that makes perfect sense.

I’ve had the unfortunate issue of similar experience in friendships— a friend who only contacts me when they need something from me, but who completely ignores any communications from me, sometimes even when I give them what they need!! It’s a food thing we’re not in the same city or coast anymore, otherwise a messy friend breakup would have happened years ago.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Wednesday, 21 September 2022 21:03 (two years ago) link

It's weird. I really don't need to be her friend and I wouldn't really care if it changed to a cordial work relationship, but I'm trying not to back away in a matter that might backfire. I don't know, work is stressful enough without another minefield I have to try and maneuver everyday.

I had a colleague somewhat like that not long ago. I gradually discovered that if I just didn't respond, she would drop it, or more likely move on to someone else.
