Red are ok, find yellow much worse and sweeter. Honestly shocked anyone would dislike green ones tbh.

I can tolerate yellow ones in spicy dishes, possibly with enough cayenne pepper to override the sweetness.

I will eat absolutely anything with this one exception, especially if served raw, as they were in the memorable sandwich which I'm pretty sure gave me food poisoning

I heard on a food program that coriander tastes like toothpaste to a small % of people with some kind of taste anomaly, maybe it's how your taste receptors are wired or something like that.

does coronation chicken always have sultanas in? back when I was a regular packaged sandwich consumer it was hard to find a chicken tikka type, especially in "nice" sandwich shops.

kinder, Saturday, 10 September 2022 17:46 (two years ago) link

imo yes (no idea abt the sandwich version)

yes, sultanas (or raisins) are canon

Anyone who thinks they don’t like peppers should try peeling them before cooking with them

Improves them enormously as taco filling or in pasta sauces, the bitterness is tempered but still charming

i like to roast the peppers. now that's delicious

maybe that's part of why i enjoy the roasted ones so much -- broiled, brown-bagged, and peeled - you cannot go wrong

I love bell peppers and eat peperonata with grilled bread as a meal probably 10 times per year. But throwing raw bell pepper on a pizza is a mistake.

"i like to roast the peppers. now that's delicious"

I like them slightly burnt by grill, pan or oven - then add them to something.

I used to like green bell peppers on pizza but i don't think i ever had em as the only topping, there were always onions and sometimes mushrooms and olives.

i usually end up buying an orange pepper "for a change" when i go into the store thinking i want a red one. the orange ones used to be prohibitively expensive but now they cost the same. i think ultimately the red ones are still my favorite but i need a break.

had some gross soups and stews that would have been fine without the green bell peppers. but also some amazing veggie paella that would have been pretty meh without em

has anyone tried making roasted green pepper sauce for pasta? could be good.

You mean the leaf or the seed? I use coriander leaves a lot, but the seeds make me nauseous, at least in my own cooking.

xp

they meant the leaf. I've got coriander seeds on my spice rack, but I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I've used them. I've frequently used mustard seeds in different Bombay Potato recipes though.

I replace green pepper with poblano in a lot of recipes. It adds something.

I bought two green peppers from the Asian store this morning just to displease the haters

calzino, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 11:43 (two years ago) link

I have a prawn curry recipe that starts with you roasting green peppers. I was dubious but it's very nice. I don't enjoy them that much otherwise. Kebabs etc also ok.

kinder, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 15:22 (two years ago) link

xps yeah i've used black mustard seed a lot in e.g. saag aloo and various dals, i like it a lot but haven't really cooked with the yellow variety. for indian recipes that call for roughly equal parts coriander, cumin and/or mustard seed, i usually half the amount of coriander or skip it entirely. the exception was for Madhur Jaffrey's chana masala spice which is excellent (i usually prefer Julie Sahni's recipes), i got addicted to that blend briefly and used it in everything but the coriander in it started making me feel ill.

fgti thanks i am always looking for vegan recipes that are unusual or different, this one looks easy and cheap enough to risk it with the coriander so i'll give it a try

green peppers in southeast Asian curries are great too.

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 13 September 2022 18:34 (two years ago) link

Try it and tell me how it goes! Important to dry roast the seeds and grind them in a mortar (or a spare pepper shaker etc) it’s a magical flavour esp w carrots

i think i'm actually one of these people but i like it anyway.

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Tuesday, 13 September 2022 20:22 (two years ago) link

from what i understand if you are one of those people it's virtually impossible to like it anyway -- my gf is one and if cilantro even brushed something she ate, it's like it was rubbed with an actual bar of soap. it's overwhelming apparently.

trying to decide if it would be worse to be one of those people for whom cilantro (coriander leaves for non-US ilxors) taste like soap or be color blind ... i feel #blessed that i am neither

I don't mind it if it's used very sparingly. It's rarely used sparingly at all.
