Good work! Thats what I assumed but sometimes there are unexpected routes

damnit i googled 'ecsm' and found another french club, Entente Chateauneuf Saint Marcel. well done!

ledge, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 12:53 (two years ago) link

I thought about cropping it so it just had 'Fuck Nancy' and no fcsm but then it was too constrained an image

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 12:57 (two years ago) link

there I was thinking it said โ€œFuck NanoXโ€, which would surely also have made sense to someone

my hours and hours of watching ligue 1 paid off big time

cherry blossom, hearing that you thought about cropping out half that tag makes me really curious about how you select the images you post. also thanks for keeping this thread alive, i really enjoy it even though i don't often get the chance to guess.

Purely on a whim.

In this particular case I was on a run this morning and it suddenly hit me that I had no idea where in France Sochaux actually is, or even if that was the name of a city or part of a city

I had a look on streetview when I got in and landed on the graffiti and immediately thought of this thread

Ok, let's have a go then.

too easy, apparently! how did you get it?

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 22:02 (two years ago) link

Looked like a mural about industrial action/workers rights, found a guy who worked in those colours and the style looked right, he's only got three or four famous works.

If you look closely it's made by chipping chunks out of the whitewashed wall

I got to it via image search for "portugal mural" and there was a mymodernist link to a healthcare mural by same guy (Vhils)

Britain! Yellow back plates. But other than that, no idea.

StanM, Monday, 19 September 2022 15:28 (two years ago) link

netherlands also has yellow plates but this looks too dreary to be anything but britain

those flats look like many in the central belt of Scotland

definitely getting scotland vibes

I think it's Wolverhampton judging by the church, but I'm having trouble replicating that view

Britain! Yellow back plates.

how on earth can you even detect that? what computers/phones/other gear do you people all have?

I opened the pic in a separate tab on my PC and zoomed in a bit? No fancy graphics workstation, just a pc

StanM, Tuesday, 20 September 2022 16:03 (two years ago) link

i concur on Wolverhampton. the indoor market building also visible and the relative positions of both suggest the view is from somewhere between the stadium and the university. the forklift might give it away.

koogs, Tuesday, 20 September 2022 17:42 (two years ago) link

isn't Wolverhampton flatter than this? I can't seem to make it work

StanM, Tuesday, 20 September 2022 18:36 (two years ago) link

Wolverhampton is much flatter. I think the photo is further north than that.

Portsmouth Bubblejet, Thursday, 22 September 2022 07:05 (two years ago) link

Not anywhere specific, but it gave me Scottish central belt vibes at first too. The low stone wall feels more Northern England though somehow.

It's a slightly bleak but comforting vista.

Almost certainly Sheffield, think I know the general area too but need to dig a bit.

Endcliffe/Crooks I reckon

landscape looks like sheffield. crookes is a good shout. i'm not 100% convinced by the housing, but difficult to see where else it could be. too big for glossop, too hilly for the other cities in that part of the world.

Reminds me of some views of Bath.

o. nate, Thursday, 13 October 2022 19:17 (two years ago) link

My wife said Bath to be fair, I've just been busy and didn't look into it further.

Long enough attention span for a Stephen Bissette blu-ray extra (aldo), Thursday, 13 October 2022 19:42 (two years ago) link

There is one tower block in Bath and I've just scouted all the straight across crossroads that could face it with no success.

Long enough attention span for a Stephen Bissette blu-ray extra (aldo), Thursday, 13 October 2022 19:50 (two years ago) link

is it bristol aka the sheffield of the south?

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Thursday, 13 October 2022 20:38 (two years ago) link

Nah, that's not Bristol (he says only to find out he's wrong).

There's two somewhat distinctive looking churches in the first pic. The square tower and smoke-blackened exterior of the one on the left are not uncommon, i haven't found anything that really matches the squat character of the one on the right.

ledge, Friday, 14 October 2022 08:17 (two years ago) link

In terms of synchronicity I have just seen this on twitter via a retweet taken in Crookes which only makes me think I was right first time

based on the Bole Hills Aerial Scenic Point (360 aerial photo on google maps) I'm going to guess that Sheffield is slightly flatter than these two pics.

StanM, Friday, 14 October 2022 13:37 (two years ago) link

the tower blocks look kind of weird for sheffield in that they seem quite a long way out of town. still wondering if it's a smaller city.

Think that might be Barrow Bridge Chimney in Bolton and there is generally a run-down Lancashire feel, but had a look and can't find any vantage point anything like that

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 21 October 2022 09:18 (two years ago) link

i could be wrong but that chimney looks pretty square. not that i have any better suggestions, google (or yandex) pretty hopeless at showing tall square red brick chimneys in a search for same.
