isn't Hallowe'en a religious festival? it's there in the name.

koogs, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 21:27 (two years ago)

(my get out clause for when someone smacks this down - i didn't say which religion)

idea of Halloween > actuality ime

koogs, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 21:29 (two years ago)

Pavement, Pavement reunion shows

oh yeah and also Halloween

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 21:53 (two years ago)

I used to work for a woman who said that All Saint's Day came after a day dedicated to Satan.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 21:55 (two years ago)

yet year after year it's the same routine
and i grow so weary of the sound of screams

lol

the performative Halloween fetishists annoy me because they post about it daily, the Spirit Halloween memes, but then like everyone else, they go to one Halloween party, they put out candy for the kids, and that's it.

if yr really as spooky-ooky-Halloween as you say you should be in costume scaring people on the highway and running them off the road

― stank viola (Neanderthal)

ok i was ringing this bell in the other thread but halloween is GAY GAY FUCKING GAY

like obviously if you're not out as _trans_ it's the one day where you can do gender diverse presentation and only get a _few_ weird looks but even if you're not trans, halloween is the one queer holiday the cishets reluctantly acknowledge

it's also our last line of defense against Santa's Claw taking over the entire fucking year, so you'd better be fucking grateful for us witches

also fuck you pumpkin spice lattes are delicious

definitely feel like some of the energy extending it to an all-month thing is spurred on by queer and queer-adjacent ppl trying to turn it into their own version of christmas. that energy is why i can get behind it, even though i'm not a big halloween celebrator irl (like not at all, who has the fucking energy to celebrate holidays for god's sake).

I personally love Halloween I just want people to embrace the darkness more.

No comedy mustache, create an extra papier mache head, work a shift as Publix dressed as Leatherface

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:37 (two years ago)

it's true that many people could do with more darkness in their lives.

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:40 (two years ago)

i think it would be hilarious if anybody, ever, advised me to "embrace the darkness" more.

i don't think that'll ever happen.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:59 (two years ago)

I wore two rats on my shoulders to work my restaurant shift last Halloween and it was suitably grim and disgusting.
Halloween is 1) secular and 2) not tethered to FAMILY and is therefore my fave holiday followed closely by Thanksgiving which is also secular and not always tied to family. For the non-family-having non-religious person, there’s no other day quite like it.

for real i was going to celebrate National Get Out of Bed Day this year but i just wasn't feeling it

i'm definitely leaning into the "found family" thing lately, for the last decade with my ex it was the two of us against the world and that's not... really a thing anymore. so this year some folks in my friend group are doing T4Thanksgiving and I'm sure I'll wind up doing that.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:04 (two years ago)

That’s great — that’s what I’m talking about. It’s not for children, it’s not religious, and it’s about gathering w people you care about. It’s a holiday for everyone. May Day is similar but less celebrated.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:06 (two years ago)

i love halloween in theory for all of these reasons but decor and costumes were never me. anyway, i already celebrate it every other day when i do yoga naked to high on fire

ꙮ (map), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:10 (two years ago)

i long for more found family but it's been a challenge for various reasons.

ꙮ (map), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:11 (two years ago)

doing yoga high, naked, and on fire is definitely the true spirit of halloween

International Workers' Day is another one of the big queer holidays, for some reason it hasn't quite taken off in the United States yet. well, me and my friends will keep celebrating at least!

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:12 (two years ago)

halloween is for normies

donald wears yer troosers (doo rag), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:20 (two years ago)

For some reason

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:21 (two years ago)

i like may day and iwd. i wish i were around more people who celebrated them. nominally progressive people here are still v. conservative. even american-flagged-over labor day is still barely acknowledged where i am. every year my supervisor makes sure we all know she doesn't believe it should be a holiday.

ꙮ (map), Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:22 (two years ago)

that reminds me i get next monday off. obviously i h8 columbus, i'm just tired of the discourse and wish i could take a break from it this year.

Everyone is perpetually seven years old nowadays. Yes let’s make all of October Halloween. Dickhead phrekes.

Josefa, Thursday, 6 October 2022 01:09 (two years ago)

TV commercial indicates that Reese's and KitKat (the big 'uns, like at the movies) are now hooked up...officially. That's my month of Halloween.

donald wears yer troosers (doo rag), Thursday, 6 October 2022 01:35 (two years ago)

I’m allergic to chocolate. Maybe that’s the problem. All I had was candy corn back in the day.. or SweeTarts.

Josefa, Thursday, 6 October 2022 01:35 (two years ago)

I worked from 1997 to 2016 at a large company, and Halloween went from being "just another day" to a festivity where entire floors were decorated and everyone was expected to compete in costume contests. Year by year it felt like creeping infantilization.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 6 October 2022 03:13 (two years ago)

Yeah, well I figured adulthood was done-for the day I saw adult-sized TMNT footie pajamas in Target's mens section 10 years ago.

Funny to see this & following discussion right after the assertion that it’s “not for kids” (tho that might have been about thanksgiving?)

Definitely the people I see (only Americans really) being all epic bacon about “spooky season” make it seem p twee and infantile

Wiggum Dorma (wins), Thursday, 6 October 2022 05:28 (two years ago)

I've never liked dressing up but Halloween parties were usually a good time before everyone had kids and we all got boring and way more sober.

I'll still rep for Christmas when it comes to holidays, despite everything - if you can divorce yourself from the commercialism and competitive decorating it can still feel like a few days of pure goodwill toward your fellow man. Plus A Christmas Carol still owns.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 6 October 2022 06:36 (two years ago)

let's be adults and talk about the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the 2022 elections

no, you know what, fuck it, let's snort pixy sticks and dress like we're 15 year old hot topic girls in 1995. you know there's literally no future for any of us, right? miao.
