based on the Bole Hills Aerial Scenic Point (360 aerial photo on google maps) I'm going to guess that Sheffield is slightly flatter than these two pics.

the tower blocks look kind of weird for sheffield in that they seem quite a long way out of town. still wondering if it's a smaller city.

Daughter thought it was Ponderosa but it doesn't look exactly right

Think that might be Barrow Bridge Chimney in Bolton and there is generally a run-down Lancashire feel, but had a look and can't find any vantage point anything like that

i could be wrong but that chimney looks pretty square. not that i have any better suggestions, google (or yandex) pretty hopeless at showing tall square red brick chimneys in a search for same.

Hang on, where was view II?

Wait my bad, I hadn't realised the one we discussed a fair bit about was a second picture

not that many square (hexagonal?) chimneys left in run-down hilly industrial towns in northern Rngland, surely?

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 21 October 2022 10:02 (two years ago) link

i mean it looks a lot like Bradford but surely, with all the cities in the world, we're not doing Bradford again

or something, Friday, 21 October 2022 10:22 (two years ago) link

a few chimneys just north of Bradford at Shipley in the Aire Valley looking interesting and the area looks right but starting work now and can't pin it down

or something, Friday, 21 October 2022 10:39 (two years ago) link

full respect to cherry blossom for keeping this game running but it does seem to be a british city almost every other go.

it does seem to be a british city almost every other go.

I was beginning to think the same thing! But checking back through the 2022 entries and it turns out that 5 of the previous 24 cities were British (bolded) so it might be they stick in the memory more

Lisbon, Shreveport, Margate, Sapporo, Iasi, Shrewsbury, Brest, Maracaibo, Preston, Kryvyi Rih, Lanzhou, New Rochelle, Kampala, Brussels, Warrington, Ketchikan, Tow Law, Ostend, Wuppertal, Riverside, Moncton, Tuzla, Montbeliard, Setubal

No idea where this is but after taking a close look at the white van's rearviewmirror I'm convinced there's a yellow-ish ghost in there.

Dinsdale, Friday, 21 October 2022 18:34 (two years ago) link

Since I still have no clue I've been clicking around and most places feel too flat. The only thing that felt remotely like "this is the kind of hills & city size we're looking for" was Huddersfield.

StanM, Saturday, 22 October 2022 17:49 (two years ago) link

I looked at Huddersfield before, there's a church that could be the one in the first pic, and two chimneys that look right, but I can't find the other church or make it fit.

ledge, Saturday, 22 October 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link

very confident this is not sheffield now

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Saturday, 22 October 2022 22:50 (two years ago) link

actually is that don valley, i.e. sheffield? chimney could be chimney house?

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Saturday, 22 October 2022 22:58 (two years ago) link

I've tried to search Sheffield and surrounding conurbations inc. Rochester, and indeed most other northern towns, for churches like the one in the first pic but not very systematically. There's two in Sheffield that could fit but they're too close to the city centre, which is much more built up than

ledge, Sunday, 23 October 2022 11:19 (two years ago) link

wait that's doncaster isn't it?

Fizzles, Sunday, 23 October 2022 11:23 (two years ago) link

ok now i'm misdoubting myself.

Woah, I thought, have I cracked the case wide open? But no, far too flat around there (Leamington Spa).

ledge, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 18:45 (two years ago) link

this certainly is a good one

StanM, Thursday, 27 October 2022 07:52 (two years ago) link

What are the chances that this is on the outskirts of, say, Manchester?

ledge, Thursday, 27 October 2022 08:39 (two years ago) link

xps hello from leamington spa btw!

I go to Leamington Spa every month (wife's doing an acupuncture degree course there) - seems nice.

four = definitely not sheffield. looks too big for glossop, but too isolated/rural/small for anything else i can think of.

I want to find that symbol on the building in front of the left hand chimney, looks like a yellow M, near impossible without the 3d. map though.
