I watched a band apart while doing my prep , it was no big deal *poops*

Yeah I really found the colonoscopy thing (prep+procedure) NBD; I have had far, far worse dental appointments!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 31 October 2022 03:33 (two years ago) link

I found the prep somewhat hellish, especially when the appointment is in the morning so you need to stay up most of the night.

Change of topic, but the increase in amount of time I've spent napping this year has been overwhelming. I've taken more naps in the past 6 months than I have in total over the past decade. Just like, 4 pm - "oh here comes that feeling again. better lay down," then come to an hour later feeling like I have molasses in my veins and cotton in my skull. Not every day, but several times per week. It's pretty annoying. I remember my dad hitting the naps pretty hard too when he was my age.

i too have the nap bug

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 31 October 2022 17:23 (two years ago) link

No naps for me. But now I'm staring down the barrel of a low-lectin diet, to try and deal with some of my auto-immune (and digestive) issues. Very curious to see how it goes but also the thought of giving up certain things, as well as general eating flexibility around friends and in restaurants, is colossally depressing to me. Gonna try for a good attitude about it though, might start a separate thread.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 31 October 2022 17:45 (two years ago) link

...I would participate in that thread as I'm about halfway to that kind of diet by necessity. (Clinging to cheese haterz gfy.)

I went to Paris on a school trip (35 15-year-olds, enough to cause long-lasting health issues in and of itself, obvs) and it was the first time I'd really had to face my dietary choices of the last few years head-on. Up until now, it had basically been confined to home and a few well-chosen restaurants. Reader, it was royal pain in the arse (and the guts).

I've been taking afternoon naps since I was a teenager, they're one of the best things in life. Pro tip: don't lie down and instead just fade out sitting up on a comfy couch or chair, then you'll wake up in 30-45 minutes without cotton ball brain and just feel refreshed.

One gift of middle age is perspective on medical procedures as you rack up a few truly unpleasant ones (colonoscopy prep is way easier to handle when you remember the week of the ureteral stent) and come to terms with occasional machine interpretations of your magical body. I used to be terrified of blood draws, now they barely faze me.

Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a shot.

I use the post-work power nap upon arriving home to make a clean break between my job and my life

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Monday, 31 October 2022 18:20 (two years ago) link

I can't do 45 minutes; it'll fuck me up for the rest of the day. I find 15-20 minutes to be extremely refreshing, though. (Sorry for intervening in you kids' conversation — back to the over-50 zone I go!)

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 31 October 2022 18:29 (two years ago) link

Daily afternoon nap (15-20 min) is crucial to me. I usually take a look at the clock before I close my eyes and again when I snap back, and it's almost always 17-18 minutes.

DPRK in Cincinnati (WmC), Monday, 31 October 2022 18:32 (two years ago) link

I don't nap, not yet at least, but the tip I read but have never tried is to have a cup of coffee right before you take a nap. That way, you fall asleep or rest, and then the coffee kicks in in about 45 minutes and either wakes you up or gives you a jolt, making the transition to being back awake smoother. I have my doubts, though, because the psychological component of coffee is real, just drinking it would probably wake me up immediately because I associate it with being awake. The same way putting my glasses on anytime other than the end of the day instantly makes me feel tired.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 31 October 2022 18:34 (two years ago) link

weekend afternoons = a nap, a fap, and a crap, but not in that order

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 31 October 2022 18:38 (two years ago) link

(problem when I nap is I keep extending it until it's basically just...sleep)

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 31 October 2022 18:39 (two years ago) link

I've spent decades fine-tuning the stimuli I need to reliably wake up from a nap at the right time... music or TV at a certain volume, upright body, room temperature. The coffee thing is a neat trick too! It will be different for everyone but you can get there!

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:17 (two years ago) link

I bloody love a nap; it's one of life's true pleasures and I do it every day if I can. In my old job, I used to nap at lunchtime and be able to time it pretty much to the minute. I don't think I was ever late back. Now I actually work for a living, I only nap when I get in and it's become a bit more hit and miss.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:41 (two years ago) link

Hello olds, I am once again here telling you (as a 38 year old) to GET A COLONOSCOPY if anything seems off or if there’s any family history. I put it off because i was “healthy” and felt fine for years, and now I’m a stage iiib cancer survivor who has a colostomy for the rest of his life. Trust me when i say it’s worth the unpleasantness.

poppin' debussy (the table is the table), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 15:49 (two years ago) link

i'm thinking of getting one before 45. my brother already got one and he's only 40.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 16:10 (two years ago) link

i'm going to go back to my doctor and see if i can get him to refer this as "regular scheduled" instead of "diagnostic". even if not, i will bite the bullet this time.

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:47 (two years ago) link

map, i say this in all seriousness as a fellow fag and friend and etc: please do whatever you can to have it done. the first signs that something was really wrong with me were blood and (okay yes gross) mucus in my movements— because of the shittiness of the US healthcare system i waited until it was clear i couldn’t wait any longer, then got a referral from my PCP for a colonoscopy. as in, i get how cumbersome and awful this shit can be especially if you don’t have a ton of cash— but lord i wish i had just gone in at the first signs of trouble

I’ve had two and I’m only 43. It really is a nice little nap. The worst part of the prep for me isn’t the logical outcome of it, but just the sheer volume of liquid I had to drink.

Jeff, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:46 (two years ago) link

Exact same notes as everyone else: I've had two. The prep sucks. The procedure is fine, you won't remember anything or feel anything or have any lasting impact. If you can get your insurance to do it, get it done.

why do you get given an anaesthetic for a colonoscopy in the USA? they don't give you one in the UK. is it just so they can charge more to your insurance or something?

My blood pressure is always massively high at the docs but seems to also be elevated at home now, despite the meds I take. White coat blood pressure, yes, because now I'm constantly anxious the reading will be high and the doc will flip.

Trying to get my doc to maybe add another medication.

The first one I took was amazing (losartan) but then got discontinued due to causing cancer or something.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 12:41 (two years ago) link

Let's just say my dad's stroke has me more worried than I should be so I'm gonna contact the doc today to ask at next months visit to consider giving me new BP meds

(his stroke of five years ago I mean)

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 12:48 (two years ago) link

My blood pressure has rocketed up this last year or so as well -- I'm reasonably confident it's the combination of my SNRI and not really quitting alcohol. So I'm tapering off the former and basically cutting out the latter for the next month or so to see if that has a measurable effect.

If not, I regret I might have to stop eating macaroni and cheese.

Eric H., Wednesday, 2 November 2022 13:43 (two years ago) link

I don't have any nutritional or dietary issues myself (thank goodness), but sorting donations at the food pantry in accordance to their requirements has made me acutely aware of things like sodium and added sugars, their two biggest bugaboos. It's kind of amazing how much stuff does not pass muster as "healthy."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 13:50 (two years ago) link

Had a colonoscopy once, they sedate you, but you are semi conscious - they let you watch if you want, I declined.

Upside - got diagnosed with IBD, so worth the test! Luckily, not really had a bad IBD flare for a while.

jel--, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:05 (two years ago) link

Sedation during colonoscopies -- I don't know what the deal is. I've had, like five of 'em, and have been knocked out cold each time. My wife has had the experience jel describes, awake but not in pain.

And listen to table -- colorectal cancer is completely treatable, if caught early. There aren't always signs that something's wrong which is why regular screenings are recommended. If the cancer is localized, still in one place, you've got a 90% recovery rate.

Seems like they keep dropping the age where you can be screened without too much hassle. Used to be 50, now it's 45. Within the next ten years, colorectal cancer may become the #1 cancer suffered by people between 20 and 50.

pplains, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:24 (two years ago) link

I don't even want to know my bp, if I knew I might have to do something about it.

Did my stretches this morning, esp hip flexibility ones. As long as you can move easily enough to do what you want, that seems fine! But my life is measurably worse without hip flex and range of motion.

Topic shift away from physical selves: I'm so much happier and more comfortable in my 40s even though I'm financially/professionally precarious right now--it's not just because I have more money or security bc I do not--I'm still much happier with the person that I am and the relationships and networks I'm part of. Previous decades suggest that this is an upward-trending line overall so I'm psyched for line goes up future decades!

Yeah, I mean you’d think that US and UK citizens would be equally used to having something up their assholes all the time, but…

I think you’re probably right.

poppin' debussy (the table is the table), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 15:36 (two years ago) link

Colorectal cancer rates among people 25-44 in the US have skyrocketed in the past 5-10 years— while the jury is out on causes, there is a great suspicion among medical professionals and dietitians that the preponderance of heavily processed food (including excess nitrite use) in our diets has something to do with it.

That said, I just have a genetic marker making me more susceptible to colorectal cancer, tho the years of smoking and etc probably did not help.

this is nice to hear, i'm happy for you.

i'm also generally happier than i have been at any point in my life. my story is shaped pretty foundationally by religious and family trauma and also financial precarity. the former hasn't gone away but it's less in control thanks to boundaries and stuff. the latter is still not amazing or anything but i've made significant progress. i'm also in a really loving relationship. could help to find a broader network but it's hard in this culturally awful place in which i live. i do rely on posters here a lot for more meaningful social interaction so thanks for putting up with my prickly ass.

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 15:51 (two years ago) link

I'm also in a better place, as far as general happiness. I don't have much in the way of social interaction (beyond occasionally hanging out with other parents). My marriage is messy and a source of constant anxiety. I'm dealing with mental health issues. Money's better than it has been, but is still precarious - could use a lot more! But despite the challenges, I've been more comfortable with myself lately.

peace, man, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 16:33 (two years ago) link

heavily processed food (including excess nitrite use)

This is interesting. I had 1 relative die of colon cancer and my mom was correspondingly cautious of feeding us any preserved meat products! We never ate ham, and if we had hot dogs one day, we had to have oatmeal the next day lol. Maybe she was onto something.

yay! For me it's often two steps forward, one step back ... but there is a forward motion. I'm doing the thing right now that is realizing which people in my life I value the most and trying to maintain/build on those relationships and letting go of the ones that are better off as friendly acquaintances. A bunch of it has to do with doing a lot less drinking than I used to, and the associated activities and stupidity that goes with drank. I still have that feeling of being in a prolonged adolescence because I am not married and don't have kids.

wrong age group thread for me personally, but need to ask UK'rs on this thread.
have any of you been offered a colonoscopy on NHS as part of a regular check up thing, as opposed to an investigation for relevant problems ?
i am 54 and have never once been offered such a procedure
in fact, i suspect even if i asked, i would be end of the very long queue due to not having any major relevant issues.

(Not being sarcastic--the prep is painless, the procedure is painless--the drugs make it even somewhat pleasant--day off from work, sense of satisfaction at having done a Good Thing for Health, interesting experience, and later, color pictures of your own rectum!!! What is not to love about a colonoscopy???)
