I am so glad I found that dusty old A/C unit in the garage. Without it, I'd be... well not at home right now.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 30 July 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)
I saw a guy playing bagpipes while riding a unicycle down Hawthorne today.

I was on my way to Laser Rush @ OMSI.
― Nate Carson, Saturday, 1 August 2009 05:51 (sixteen years ago)
HA ha. I'm sitting outside shirtless, reading "The Ridiculous Race" about two tv comedy writers deciding to race around the world without using airplanes(one of them cheats), and drinking my roommate's beer.
Tonight is far more tolerable than last night.
― kingfish, Saturday, 1 August 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)
Had vegan cupcakes tonight (a friend started working at Saint Cupcake recently). Gooooood.

I hear we might get rain on Monday. Fingers crossed!

They need some sort of Bearded Trust Fund Casualty sign on that part of town. It's Height-Ashbury for tourist retards and they peel up a new Reed student off the ground like every other day over there.
― Darin, Sunday, 2 August 2009 07:40 (sixteen years ago)
^needs more region- and subculture-specific buzzwords imo

Has anybody gone to the Sisters Folk Music Festival? Is it worth going to?
― banjoboy, Sunday, 2 August 2009 08:45 (sixteen years ago)
Energy Food - the bagpipe-playing, unicycle guys on Hawthorne bring out the worst in all of us. It's just what they do.
― Darin, Monday, 3 August 2009 07:00 (sixteen years ago)
Sunday nights at Beulahland has music videos by request after 8 or so. It's pretty much a DIY 120 Minutes/Headbanger's Ball. I try to go there weekly, and it's a blast.
Meanwhile, my experiment of trying to cool my bedroom down with two box fans facing opposite ways in different windows seems to have worked.

Also, adult soap box derby is on the 22nd

Grand re-opening of the expanded/remodeled Farm Cafe is on wednesday night. Love that place.
― Nate Carson, Monday, 3 August 2009 08:43 (sixteen years ago)
Oh man I totally forgot about Beulahland on Sundays, and here I was being all friendless sadsack wishing I had something to do tonight.
Also Darin what the hell this was like the first time I got all zing-style on ILX and you come back all concilliatory and the bigger man? Bullshit. Let's try again:
fuk u ur gay
Your move.

xpost -- I'm looking forward to the adult soap box derby -- I haven't been in a few years even though I live just a stone's throw away from Tabor. I've always been out of town that weekend. But then the week after that I'm moving out to east county, so future visits will be more difficult.

i just visited portland last week, was thoroughly amazed by the number of bars and restaurants and indie boutiques. portland is the new oakland, i think. if i didn't have things tying me down (like a wife and job) i'd move there in a heartbeat. good job portland!
ps - i ate at gravy. what an incredible restaurant!
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)
mmm yeah it is good
― sleeve, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)
I have not tried Gravy yet. But I've heard tales.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 10:14 (sixteen years ago)
Finally checked out the new and improved Mississippi Studios tonight. It's nice.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 7 August 2009 09:31 (sixteen years ago)
is it bigger now?
― jergins, Friday, 7 August 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)
For those wanting cheap entertainment, i'm throwing a birthday pizza party for me tonight at Ground Kontrol from 7pm onward. It promises to be appropriately loud & stupid.
― kingfish, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)
I like loud n' stupid! I might stop by after my roommate interview thing for some Dr Who pinball.
PS it is hard to find people to live with up in this piece, everybody wants me to be a vegan woman non-smoker.
And if anybody is about to suggest a Bosom Buddies scheme, rest assured have already had that dream.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)
That Portland/Oakland thing is funny, since from time to time in Oakland I'm struck by how much it reminds me of of Portland. Berkeley and parts of Seattle factor into this as well. Also, had breakfast at Gravy a couple years back and it was good, but the most unforgettable part was that it took like an hour and a half to be served!
― Chinavision (altair nouveau), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)
was in portland last week. ate at Pambiche, Waffle Window, India Something Something Cart, La Jaracito, KoiFusionPDX, Whiffies and Crema Bakery. holy shit, perfect food experience the whole trip.

i'm visiting portland for a week starting tomorrow. can anyone recommend a dj/dance night, or good shows in general? willamette week hasn't updated its music listings yet, don't know where else to check.
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
also would be interested in hearing about anything else particularly cool going on. excited!
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)
Never been to any of them but my brother-in-law seems to always be DJing at some club somewhere when he's not a philosophy professor at other places. I know he veers pretty heavy towards hip-hop rather than straight up dance:

― joygoat, Monday, 24 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
hip-hop's not really my dancing choice, but thanks for the suggestion. may look at the list of clubs he spins at and see if they have other, more electronic-dancey nights
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)
holocene is the first best choice for dance music, depending what's going on. also check a night called Nightclubbing (i think their myspace has the most up-to-date info). they do it at various venues, might be a monthly.

somebody's bored at work!
went through the mercury listings, here are the best couple that i found:
soul stew, DJ Aquaman. I think this is the weekly that's been going on forever, he's friends with somebody famous, i forget whohttp://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Event?oid=1322026
liked the name on this one, heard Dunes is cool though i've never beenDeep Space Disco: DJ Honeydripper, DJ Rainbow Pudding http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Event?oid=1594341
― this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)
Dunes is... not very cool. It's like a haven for underagers with fake IDs mostly.
You could always come to my DJ night Thursdays! But it's at a rock & roller dive bar where I get looked at sideways for playing like bizarre love triangle, much less being able to keep a sustained dance thing going on.
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)
I've said this before on board, but Pierced Arrows was great last night
― bear, bear, bear, Monday, 24 August 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)
some day when i have money, i will come to yr night, clay!some day.
― tehresa, Monday, 24 August 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)
aw! <3
I should be back in Seattle sometime in the middle of next month, doing another band session! We'll have to get together for a drink one night!

i will invite myself along and actually go this time

― tehresa, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)
Clay, where do you play? I'll come and request Bizzare Love Triangle, so when you get looks you can point at me and roll yr eyes.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)
ha, i always play BLT. It's just the aging punk rockers sneer at me for it. Which is a pleasure really.
The Matador on W. Burnside. Thursday nights.
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)
I have various other gigs too but they're more irregular. Second Saturday here, one Friday every three months there, etc. Everybody's a DJ in Portland, it's hard to get gigs/get noticed!
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)
last time i was in portland i saw chromatics at holocene & then danced, it was great. i'll be gone by the time prins rolls through, too bad. thanks for the tips. i definitely want to check out the doug fir, i missed it last time.
clay, where is your dj night? xpost - nevermind. w burnside, i think my friends may live near there
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)
no wait, i think they are on the southeast side? it's all backwards from how we do in dc
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)
nobody lives on the west side except me and a bunch of douchebags.
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)
does the Matador still do the free popcorn?
― this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago)
no, but they have decent beer now and still have the stiffest drinks in town, probably. sometimes there is a terrible spanish-language rock band that opens for me. god i should have this thread de-googled now so i don't get fired!
