Kind of hard to overestimate how popular Michael Barrymore was at the time, like Ant & Dec put together times ten.

Lol i saw barrymore's name and knew what the video was gonna be.

you can't beat a bit of amusing Fast Show character style verisimilitude! I felt like making a wisecrack the other day when a driver skidded on the ice and smashed into this total dickhead's car around the corner from my house, but I'd probably be in hospital rn if I had.

the stand-out in-laws-growling-across-the-marmalade moment in all that is ferdie mount and pankaj mishra i think lol

it omits alex cockburn's marriage into the royal-adjacent aristocracy (to emma tennant) tho i guess as both are dead and his daughter daisy is not really "in media" this is forgiveable

mark s, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 12:47 (two years ago)

basically i know way too much abt the cockburns

mark s, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 12:48 (two years ago)

eg alex's sister sarah wrote whodunnits and smoked a pipe

mark s, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 12:50 (two years ago)

I could imagine loads of of them initially starting off in life with the intention to determinedly go their own way and then after not getting anywhere, saying fuck it and leaning back on family connections and failing upwards. I can't imagine any young person enthusiastically going straight from HE into whatever job mummy/daddy/uncle can fastrack them into, instantly making them the most hated brats wherever they are working, with lack of dues paying experience etc..

alexander theodore (alex) callinicos is a member of the central committee of the SWP (uk wing) and also its international secretary (i.e. he runs it lol)

His mum, the honorable ædgyth lyon-dalberg-acton, was daughter of the 2nd lord acton, son of the 19th-century english historian john emerich edward dalberg-acton, 1st baron acton, 13th marquess of groppoli, aka lord acton of "absolute power corrupts absolutely" fame -- legend has it that alex thus has an entry in the almanach de saxe-gotha tho i do not own a copy or access and have never been able to confirm this

also the actons are a landed shropshire family which is like the almanach de saxe-gotha but very rustic

A chocolate thief is facing jail after admitting he stole almost 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs in a heist worth more than £31,000.

Joby Pool, 32, dubbed “the Easter bunny” by police, used a stolen lorry cab to make off with chocolate after breaking into a Telford industrial unit with a metal grinder on Saturday.

two years in jail for stealing some creme eggs. bit grim.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Wednesday, 15 February 2023 08:37 (two years ago)

author of the story deserves three years imo

mark s, Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:42 (two years ago)

no you see it's funny because the man stole cheap chocolates and now he's going to jail for a long time and the journalist will never need to meet him or even think about him again.

tbf he's used to watching football live for nothing

n July 2021, it was reported by The Guardian that Benton was one of nine MPs from different political parties who had accepted tickets to high-profile sporting events as hospitality from betting and gambling companies. He received tickets to Royal Ascot, two Euro 2020 football games and Wimbledon.[

Ryley denied that she or her husband were racist. “I’m not a racist in any form.” She confirmed that her husband had been photographed in a T-shirt from the far-right group Britain First. She said: “I don’t think Chris is a supporter of Britain First, he was just wearing that shirt because it was convenient at the time.”

Tony Daly, who manages a nearby charity shop, said the dolls made his “blood boil” and said he was shocked they had been on display in such a diverse area.

I think that chazza is the one I had a nose around in on a recent and ill-advised sojourn to the fine hamlet of Grays! The guy working there was chatting with some customers about Michael Jackson, the gist of the conversation being that MJ must be innocent of everything he was ever accused of. Not sure how they came to that conclusion tbh. Can't be certain it was him either so I might be maligning the fellow. The books, by the way, were arranged on the shelves by spine colour, it was very odd.

Read about the allotment lady and allotment wars.

Re the food bank allotment lady whose garden got salted - Mum told me there was a survey in The Times of which 5% of people admitted (ADMITTED) to sabotaging other plots. British gardening is a cutthroat and horrible culture
