it's open season on mysterious flying objects

If more immigrants traveled by balloon it would put to rest all the silliness about Trumpy walls. Balloons appear to be an underrated way of getting to the United States.

Let me try this out: a certain band I was unfamiliar with showed up in my algorithmic year-end wrap-up because they are one of my daughter’s favorites and so…I will have listen to them myself and get back to you.

uh, are you at liberty to reveal the name of the band?

(and is it Wallows?)

Funnily enough I was reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my daughter at bedtime last week and did some on-the-go editing as I went. He was a bit of a mean-spirited prick, wasn't he.

Sam Weller, Monday, 20 February 2023 10:31 (one year ago) link

I think that part of his work is very appealing to children, there’s nothing saccharine about it at all. There’s so many dark and disturbing plots! The witches killing children, the child-eating giants, the things that happen to the bad winners on the chocolate factory tour. On the one hand, this appeals to a child’s sense of thrill and fascination with things that scare them, but on the other you’re like reading this (as an adult) and wondering exactly how far removed he is from those Daily Mail columnists who despise children and call the police if they see them playing outside. I mean the works are generally good, the outrage is completely dull as per, but even as a child you know that stuff is harsh af.

irony with Dahl is that i don't feel he missed out on a great career writing books for adults

satori enabler (Noodle Vague), Monday, 20 February 2023 13:32 (one year ago) link

Especially because he wrote quite a bit for adults (and it’s fantastically misanthropic material as well)

I used to work in a second-hand bookshop where old copies of his charmingly titled "Switch Bitch" were regularly on the shelves, and sold well to people obv. attracted by the author's name. "You're in for a disappointment or a shock" I always thought.

Roald Dahl

― into the crypt of ray reardon (Matt #2), Monday, February 20, 2023 4:04 AM (five hours ago)

Being the one I read at the oldest age, the Dahl I most vividly remember is Boy, his autobiography of being relentlessly abused at boarding school. If JKR had read it, maybe we'd all have been spared

rob, Monday, 20 February 2023 14:31 (one year ago) link

ChatGPT. Listening to someone prattle about this is like hearing them talk about crypto or their fantasy football team. I just don't care.

Sam Weller, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 14:51 (one year ago) link

I used to not care about Harry Potter, but now I do at least care enough to never spend a cent on anything that makes JKR wealthier.

I just don't care about the Chinese government "spying" on us with TikTok and balloons.

beard papa, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 21:59 (one year ago) link

Right, beard papa, both governments are constantly looking at both countries with countless satellites (and in lots of other ways).

There is nothing that a balloon can see that wouldn't get seen otherwise.

Also TikTok can't get anything of value that we aren't already providing to a hundred sources in a dozen ways whenever we interact with a phone or computer or tablet or phablet or tabputer or comphab or whatever. Or click "yes" on a user agreement or terms and conditions or whatever.

I am pretty sure that electronically speaking, I have already been as compromised as I am likely to get. I don't really have any secrets anyways, and if something bad was going to happen to me I suppose it already would have. Or it's going to happen anyway regardless of what I do or don't do.

(P.S. Hi, digital overlords! Hope you're doing well.)

Andy otm.

My kids like TikTok. Anything TikTok can get from me is already out there a thousand times over.

I am resigned to that fate. The horse has left the barn, and closing the door now would be pointless.

The way I see it is that we're all going to go to information hell anyway; why spend too much effort on getting ourselves out of the handbasket that almost everyone is in?

whether or not to ban TikTok

Two days ago I would have been with you, but after reading up on some of the Patriot Act ass bullshit they are trying to squeeze into this, I think it might behoove us all to care a little bit more. I don't give a shit if TikTok goes away, but I do give a shit about Congress using it as an excuse to expand their digital surveillance of citizens.

Oh yeah. Virginia is advancing a bill to require proof of age to access porn.

Sounds well intended in theory (won't someone PLEASE think of the CHILDREN?). But the idea of three or four million Virginians uploading their driver's license to PornHub?

"Alex, I'll take 'unintended consequences' for $200, please."
