#3 Again, following the road backwards. That's all for today.

oh huh that first one really faked me out lol

you’re spoiling us !

can anyway make out what it says on that snack bar on the right in the first picture? is it PARK or (much more intriguingly) PANN- ?

It's definitely Sweden, I think... too prominent a "-vägen" is visible on that sign. Looks like it could be Eriksvägen but there is no roadway by that name that resembles this neighbourhood

I gotta get back to work so I'm just going to guess Landskrona and hope I'm right

I also thought Sweden but god knows where

kinder, Thursday, 23 February 2023 22:25 (one year ago) link

yeah i assumed denmark or sweden once i saw the signage though i couldnt read the actual text on the street sign. doesnt look like a major city to me with those road conditions unless its pretty far out of the city center

ciderpress, Thursday, 23 February 2023 22:32 (one year ago) link

3 images!

I saw the first just before I went out and was thinking Northern Germany or Denmark, but I now concur on Sweden

I found something similar to the house on the left in the first photo but it didn't lead anywhere fruitful

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Friday, 24 February 2023 11:36 (one year ago) link

It's definitely PARK but I think it refers to the location and not the name. I think the name is the cursive on the far left of that strip and on the sandwich board with the milkshake on

I think it might be Sundbyberg as there's a cemetery next to an Eriksvagen but can't find the other details.

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Friday, 24 February 2023 13:52 (one year ago) link

Are we sure it says Eriksvagen?

It didnt say that at all for me until someone said it did

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Friday, 24 February 2023 14:02 (one year ago) link

to ne it looks like there’s some extra letters between the Erik(s) part and the vägen part (assuming these are correct)

let us now celebrate ama ‘piano’ smith & the clowns (breastcrawl), Friday, 24 February 2023 14:19 (one year ago) link

I'm on board with vägen for multiple reasons but I'm pretty wary about this Erik business

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Friday, 24 February 2023 14:24 (one year ago) link

I did immediately think Erik too, then a couple of letters and then maybe wegen or wingen?

StanM, Friday, 24 February 2023 15:31 (one year ago) link

southern part of Sweden definitely

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Friday, 24 February 2023 15:44 (one year ago) link

I don't see football goals, only smaller hockey goals - so outside fake-grass hockey

Ha I think I reached a similar conclusion late last night

kinder, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:09 (one year ago) link

yes, you literally proceed from Eriksvägen to Kyrkogårdsvägen (Churchyard Road) - I have been roaming these roads, but no luck here either

let us now celebrate ama ‘piano’ smith & the clowns (breastcrawl), Friday, 24 February 2023 18:20 (one year ago) link

ive been looking at cemeteries since that seems like the most specific of the 3 photos in that theres few per city, been hard to find one with a hill like that

ciderpress, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:21 (one year ago) link

its definitely not Eriksvägen, it's something like Er_s_vägen and that first blank could be 2 letters

ciderpress, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:29 (one year ago) link

i guess its not impossible for the first letter to be K and not E as well

ciderpress, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:30 (one year ago) link

What it looks closest to is "Erik s:t vägen"

"s:t" being the Sverige abbreviation for "Sankt" (a.k.a. Saint)

I have found "S:t Erik Vägen" in other places in Sweden (and a few "Sankt Erik Vägen") but no incidence of "Erik S:t Vägen" or any reason why the placement of the honorific would be reversed like that, if it is in fact an "s:t" that I'm seeing

awesome work

nxd, Friday, 24 February 2023 22:10 (one year ago) link

great job! and that letter in between was the key: the secret too

first view. it says "PARKGRILLEN" on the snack bar.

second view, the cemetery.

important detail:

For historical reasons it has always been referred to as a city, despite the small number of inhabitants, which as of 2010 total was 4,857.

Great work - well done!

I took great care with the visible text in the first image, and then I could have kicked myself when I realised I left that street sign in at the edge of picture #3. But at least it caused a bit of confusion.

I have walked down the road in these pictures many times. I realise it looks a bit grim from these views, but if you go on past Parkgrillen, you reach the bustling harbour town, the first and biggest stop in the archipelago for all the boats from Stockholm. There is a large fortress, many shops and cafes, a beach, loads of tourists. Vaxholm does feel very much like a town rather than a city, but as breastcrawl just pointed out, it clings to its tenuous city designation, hence qualifying for the competition.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 February 2023 22:58 (one year ago) link

That was a good one, and I was pretty wide of the mark, I'd found a few false trails in Gothenburg and was too reluctant to let it go and focus elsewhere

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Saturday, 25 February 2023 02:53 (one year ago) link

thanks for putting me out of my misery fgti! Google kept trying to send me to thrift stores called Erikshjälpen.

I was in Stockholm last fall, and almost took the boat to Vaxholm for the day. Maybe if I'd gone, I'd have recognized it.

The heavens dictate

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 1 March 2023 19:51 (one year ago) link

If the white circular thing is a thermometer (which it might not be) then it's in fahrenheit which would mean we're in the US. The filter coffee, the bible quote on the screen and the look of the family in the photos would appear to confirm this.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 1 March 2023 21:57 (one year ago) link

That looks like a Mr Coffee coffeemaker too. And I have a cheap wine carafe just like that one, Gallo, I think.

nickn, Wednesday, 1 March 2023 23:07 (one year ago) link

The heavens dictate

It looks like that in the photo, but it's really "the heavens declare". The same image can be found in a few places, including on this page: https://deebrestin.com/2014/05/the-lords-two-great-books-psalm-19/. Running an image search off that one hasn't taken me anywhere particularly useful though.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 2 March 2023 13:29 (one year ago) link

Seems like the best lead would be to try to identify that logo on the top of the letterhead and on the business card. Very blurry though.

o. nate, Thursday, 2 March 2023 16:49 (one year ago) link

The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows his handiwork.

The thermometer is in Farenheit and it's a pretty mild day, around 70 degrees.

Looks like some decent forest cover in the window reflection.

I guess the thermometer shows the temperature inside?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 2 March 2023 17:36 (one year ago) link

the reflection outside the window could be anywhere green that has tower blocks but the cubicle setup alone made me think USA too tbh

StanM, Thursday, 2 March 2023 20:14 (one year ago) link

otoh, IS this a cubicle? do they generally/ever have those wide windows (are they windows?)

StanM, Thursday, 2 March 2023 20:17 (one year ago) link

I think it's a mirror?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 2 March 2023 20:19 (one year ago) link

I think it's "The Heavens Declare The G(lory of God)", not dictate. Psalm 19

There appears to be a body of water in the reflection behind the photographer, and the light in the photos (and the manner of dress) looks decisively Carolinian, Georgian, Floridian

Oh, didn't realise Eyeball Kicks had already made that conclusion regarding Psalm 19, my apologies

a round mirror on the right too?

StanM, Friday, 3 March 2023 00:30 (one year ago) link

I'm intrigued by the flip phone - who still has those? Google tells me they're still commonly used in Japan, but this obviously isn't Japan. I wonder if there are any regions in the US where they're more common?

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 3 March 2023 00:49 (one year ago) link

My guess is a small city somewhere in the Bible Belt. I'm guessing screensaver Bible quotes aren't so common on the East/West Coasts, and the family pics that suggest a warm climate
