i just visited portland last week, was thoroughly amazed by the number of bars and restaurants and indie boutiques. portland is the new oakland, i think. if i didn't have things tying me down (like a wife and job) i'd move there in a heartbeat. good job portland!

ps - i ate at gravy. what an incredible restaurant!

mmm yeah it is good

sleeve, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I have not tried Gravy yet. But I've heard tales.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 10:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Finally checked out the new and improved Mississippi Studios tonight. It's nice.

Nate Carson, Friday, 7 August 2009 09:31 (fifteen years ago) link

is it bigger now?

jergins, Friday, 7 August 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

For those wanting cheap entertainment, i'm throwing a birthday pizza party for me tonight at Ground Kontrol from 7pm onward. It promises to be appropriately loud & stupid.

kingfish, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 22:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I like loud n' stupid! I might stop by after my roommate interview thing for some Dr Who pinball.

PS it is hard to find people to live with up in this piece, everybody wants me to be a vegan woman non-smoker.

And if anybody is about to suggest a Bosom Buddies scheme, rest assured have already had that dream.

That Portland/Oakland thing is funny, since from time to time in Oakland I'm struck by how much it reminds me of of Portland. Berkeley and parts of Seattle factor into this as well.
Also, had breakfast at Gravy a couple years back and it was good, but the most unforgettable part was that it took like an hour and a half to be served!

was in portland last week. ate at Pambiche, Waffle Window, India Something Something Cart, La Jaracito, KoiFusionPDX, Whiffies and Crema Bakery. holy shit, perfect food experience the whole trip.

i'm visiting portland for a week starting tomorrow. can anyone recommend a dj/dance night, or good shows in general? willamette week hasn't updated its music listings yet, don't know where else to check.

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

also would be interested in hearing about anything else particularly cool going on. excited!

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Never been to any of them but my brother-in-law seems to always be DJing at some club somewhere when he's not a philosophy professor at other places. I know he veers pretty heavy towards hip-hop rather than straight up dance:

joygoat, Monday, 24 August 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

hip-hop's not really my dancing choice, but thanks for the suggestion. may look at the list of clubs he spins at and see if they have other, more electronic-dancey nights

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

holocene is the first best choice for dance music, depending what's going on. also check a night called Nightclubbing (i think their myspace has the most up-to-date info). they do it at various venues, might be a monthly.

somebody's bored at work!

went through the mercury listings, here are the best couple that i found:

soul stew, DJ Aquaman. I think this is the weekly that's been going on forever, he's friends with somebody famous, i forget who
http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Event?oid=1322026

liked the name on this one, heard Dunes is cool though i've never been
Deep Space Disco: DJ Honeydripper, DJ Rainbow Pudding

this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Dunes is... not very cool. It's like a haven for underagers with fake IDs mostly.

You could always come to my DJ night Thursdays! But it's at a rock & roller dive bar where I get looked at sideways for playing like bizarre love triangle, much less being able to keep a sustained dance thing going on.

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I've said this before on board, but Pierced Arrows was great last night

bear, bear, bear, Monday, 24 August 2009 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

some day when i have money, i will come to yr night, clay!
some day.

tehresa, Monday, 24 August 2009 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

aw! <3

I should be back in Seattle sometime in the middle of next month, doing another band session! We'll have to get together for a drink one night!

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i will invite myself along and actually go this time

this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

i'll believe that when i see it!

tehresa, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Clay, where do you play? I'll come and request Bizzare Love Triangle, so when you get looks you can point at me and roll yr eyes.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ha, i always play BLT. It's just the aging punk rockers sneer at me for it. Which is a pleasure really.

The Matador on W. Burnside. Thursday nights.

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I have various other gigs too but they're more irregular. Second Saturday here, one Friday every three months there, etc. Everybody's a DJ in Portland, it's hard to get gigs/get noticed!

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

last time i was in portland i saw chromatics at holocene & then danced, it was great. i'll be gone by the time prins rolls through, too bad. thanks for the tips. i definitely want to check out the doug fir, i missed it last time.

clay, where is your dj night? xpost - nevermind. w burnside, i think my friends may live near there

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link

no wait, i think they are on the southeast side? it's all backwards from how we do in dc

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

nobody lives on the west side except me and a bunch of douchebags.

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

does the Matador still do the free popcorn?

this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

no, but they have decent beer now and still have the stiffest drinks in town, probably. sometimes there is a terrible spanish-language rock band that opens for me. god i should have this thread de-googled now so i don't get fired!

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

was that the place with the shirtless dj dudes?

tehresa, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yes.

pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Check the Portland Mercury for events. You have stuff like Rock Band Night at Ground Kontrol on tuesday, or $5 free-play there on wednesday night all night. There's also the Fez for dancin'.

Saturday, they're showing "The Room" at Cinema 21 and I'll be damned if I'm not going.

kingfish, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Thankig u for the many stuff goin on updates, they are v useful for the bored and locally friendless (yo).

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Sunday is the pug playdate in the off-leash area of Irving Park at Fremont & NE 7th at like 2:30pm or so. It's always amusing.

kingfish, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, if you're up for a beer, post on here and I'm sure a few portland ilxors would be interested

kingfish, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Will you might also want to try Branx (http://www.myspace.com/branxpdx). i've heard it's small and can be worthwhile, depending who's playing. also Rotture is right there http://www.rotture.com/ though i don't know the first thing about that place

this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Rotture is appaz the hipster meatmarket; this is second-hand information, mind, and from someone who might be a bit quick on the h-word trigger, but rather reliable.

And yeah I'll get a beer! Mini-FAP should happen at some point, though I should warn my work schedule is shit and I'm not available many nights until like 12:30.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 07:34 (fifteen years ago) link

W I L L, go see Atole at Work/Sound on the 28th. They always put on a great dance party with live music.

And if you swing the other way, my doom metal band of 12 years -- Witch Mountain, is playing at Dante's on the 28th with Jucifer and Lickity (a synth/punk duo featuring the original drummer from FEAR).

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 10:52 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks for the tips, all. i kept pretty busy, didn't really have time for a FAP, but thanks for the offer. <3 portland. you all are some fortunate people to be living there!

W i l l, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago) link

kingfish, that wasn't you sitting next to me at b-side tonight, right? cuz there was a dude who looked a lot like you (I think, been awhile since I saw a wdyll) with a ground kontrol shirt, but his beard was black so I assumed no.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 3 September 2009 10:39 (fifteen years ago) link
