Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 23 April 2023 05:13 (one year ago) link

Oh shoot, I hadn't seen this until now.

Anyway. Formally a Portland resident as of April 1!

xpost It was a treat of a night and a joy to meet ya!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 23 April 2023 06:00 (one year ago) link

Way cool Eazy! Open invite to folks here - if anyone is in the PDX area and wants to hang out, drop me a DM. :)

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 23 April 2023 15:46 (one year ago) link

same offer goes for me in Eugene!

Aw man, I missed this yesterday

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Sunday, 23 April 2023 17:31 (one year ago) link

But yeah, if we ever want to do a meetup in Portland, I’m in.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Sunday, 23 April 2023 19:32 (one year ago) link

sorry I couldn’t make it last night, just couldn’t swing logistics with that and work, glad it went well! and obv also down for a hang if something comes together

Clay, Sunday, 23 April 2023 20:54 (one year ago) link

Definitely up for that as well, whenever most people can make it. I'm in SE near Ladd's Addition, but open to wherever (especially with spring on the way).

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Sunday, 23 April 2023 21:42 (one year ago) link

I'm near Foster-Powell. What sort of timing are we thinking? Is a weekday lunch OK? My work schedule is pretty flexible and a lot of times I'll go to Pizzeria Otto FoPo, they have a Margherita lunch special at a really good price. That's just an opening suggestion, though, I have a car so I can go damn near anywhere.

Sleeve I've been planning to visit some friends down in Eugene for, well, literally years now. If I ever actually get down there you're on the itinerary. :)

Weekday lunch would work for me as well, and otherwise have a flexible schedule at least for the next few weeks (and pizza sounds good too)

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Monday, 24 April 2023 01:41 (one year ago) link

I work in Tualatin so I’m more open on weekends/weeknights

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 27 April 2023 23:03 (one year ago) link

i used to live out by beaverton, i'm meeting up with eazy for lunch early next week, i figure we can take it from there :)

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 27 April 2023 23:43 (one year ago) link

Had a great lunch with Kate today at Pizzeria Otto FoPo ($8 for a wood-fired Margherita pizza!). I love how Portland still has good cheap meals for $10 and under (no sales tax makes a big difference).

Anyway. Hope more of us can meet up this spring/summer!

I am happy my visit helped indirectly spark more of this!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 May 2023 01:08 (one year ago) link

Glad to have a chance to finally meet some of y'all! I'm kind of a ghost when it comes to the public Internet - this is the only public social space on the net I still hang out on!

one month passes...

I am visiting and this is my last night here. Trying to find a way to get into the sold-out Conner O'Malley show at the Aladdin Theater.

seven months pass...

ice storm is looking pretty bad tomorrow... i'm hunkered down in my girlfriend's apartment. it was built for student housing so the insulation is pretty good, unlike with my apartment where the walls are made of paper. expecting widespread power outages tomorrow. we got food and plenty of blankets and we should be ok. hope everyone in the area is staying safe.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 02:33 (five months ago) link

i haven't lost power through the first part of this other than blips and it came right back, but yeah tomorrow's the real test. should all burn off wednesday

Clay, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 02:43 (five months ago) link

so icy down here in Eugene, haven't left the house since Saturday mid-day. not even the buses are running!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 02:48 (five months ago) link

actually I did manage to take the pup for a short walk this afternoon, she seemed to enjoy it! but it is an ice rink, 20-minute walk and I almost fell twice

Power was out at the office, okay in the neighborhood. Picked up an electric heater on Saturday morning after one night of the wind getting thru the windows into the bedroom. Cats have mainly been indoors for the past 3 days and are complaining about it

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 06:28 (five months ago) link

We lost power for three hours Saturday morning, got it back, then lost it again at 1:30pm as the thermometer was hitting 15F with 35 mph winds. We lived with wood-burning fireplace heat and a camp stove for the next 52 hours or so. Our living room eventually stabilized at 47F. We set a timer at one hour intervals all night to feed the fire, taking turns.

We got power back yesterday (Monday) at 5pm. Since then we've raised the house back up to 68F, got some sleep, and today we've been prepping like mad for the next outage from the coming ice storm. We still have lots of wood, but only about 65% of what we had going into this storm. We'll survive. We've lived through similar events multiple times. Just not much fun.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 23:28 (five months ago) link

Car windows here (Southeast) iced over solid in about 15 minutes. Can't imagine what 12 hours of this will be like if the graupel continues. Have been lucky keeping heat and power this past weekend and mostly hunkering down, though the snow has been un-slippery the past two days and easy for walking.

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 00:23 (five months ago) link

My wife and I tried walking to the grocery store yesterday and she fell and injured her wrist. Ended up taking her to the ER and it was full of concussed folks who slipped on ice.

bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 01:20 (five months ago) link

my girlfriend got her car stolen overnight, kudos to them i guess for putting in all the work to steal a car in this weather

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 05:37 (five months ago) link

Damn that sucks. Plenty of stuff shuttered in Multnomah and Clackamas Counties today.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 17:13 (five months ago) link

finally slipped and fell while feeding the chickens, no harm done fortunately

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 17:35 (five months ago) link

It's been just unbelievably slick out there. At least it's not going back below freezing.

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 22:41 (five months ago) link

I have some 'trail' crampons with spikes about 1/2" long so I think I'll try getting out of the house for a short walk along mostly level grades. I'm getting a bit stir crazy, also sleep deprived. At least we are still with power, so there's no real threat to our health or safety while we wait for the slow thaw.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 22:52 (five months ago) link

I'm getting serious cabin fever... still stuck at my GFs with her other GF and her roommate... still not safe to travel today. Hopefully tomorrow. Me, my GF, and her GF are all doing pretty badly in emotional health terms, and putting us all in an apartment together isn't exactly making for wacky comedy gold. Plus, the weather has meant that I haven't had access to, like, therapy. I guess the upside is that I've written 5,000 words of fiction in the past two days, simply for lack of anything else to do.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 05:18 (five months ago) link

Damn, that sucks. I hope you’re feeling better today.

Been mostly in the apartment for the past several days, was going to motor to the workplace today but with freezing rain going to possibly hit this afternoon, I’m holding off on that.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 18 January 2024 16:36 (five months ago) link

Today I'm thinking of moving to Minnesota. I hear the weather's nicer there.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 19:27 (five months ago) link

We lost power for another two hours from 4pm to 6pm. Temperature hovering between 31F and 32F with strongish winds and the neighborhood has hundreds of 125 ft tall firs and cedars getting top heavy with ice. I am not optimistic about making through the night without losing it again. Ah, me. Just hoping the roof stays intact and the cars uncrushed.

something big happened near my home around 4pm, heard what sounded like a truck overturning and then an explosion, followed by more sirens than i've heard in years. my power went off just as it happened and then came back on 5 minutes later. sirens ran for 15-20 minutes. i did not go investigate

Clay, Friday, 19 January 2024 04:04 (five months ago) link

Absolutely hellish. No more than blinks here, fortunately, and being back home helps a lot surprisingly.

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 19 January 2024 14:56 (five months ago) link

my wife's ex-step-daughter is staying here now because in Springfield she was told it could be another week (!!) before she gets power

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Friday, 19 January 2024 15:02 (five months ago) link

I’ve heard about this in a few places, power lines down or transformers blowing. Looks like we’ve still got big winds ahead today.

Multnomah County bldgs are shut down today, Clackamas County are opening late, school everywhere is off apparently

three weeks pass...

i don't really keep up with local news but i've had a couple of people mention portland nazis to me recently. and maybe i'm being oversensitive but there's usually a tone of disapproval, like, "what the fuck, you have _nazis_ there? and you're, like, ok with that?"

well of course i'm not fucking ok with it. i got at least two nazis in my (extremely gay) neighborhood. they could probably kill a lot of queer people if they got the mind to do so. like, what's the ask here?

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:05 (four months ago) link

why haven't you singlehandedly eradicated them?

never trust a big book and a simile (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:06 (four months ago) link

i'm not saying it to be confrontational, it's a genuine question! i hate living around nazis and i just don't know what the hell i can do to help get rid of them.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:56 (four months ago) link

Portland is weird because it didn’t sprawl like most American metros did, so white flight was only a difference of like 5 miles away or across the river into Washington State. You can bike it.

So the kicker here is that the suburban/exurban fashy supporter crowd is a lot close to the city types they all hate, rather than like an hour away as it plenty of other metros
