the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

re 'invalid handle' message on your profile :

i had this earlier today.

there seems to be 2 options

- wait until it clears as the cause is some servers are having a wobble,
- go to advanced settings > change handle > put in your current handle > save

i did the second option, as well as going through the option to (re)validate my DNS as i had been playing around with it yesterday when figuring things out re my domain.

― chihuahuau, Thursday, November 14, 2024 4:38 PM (fourteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

idk about better but my understanding is broadly the way they differ your activitypub data is located at the mastodon instance where you sign up its portable in the sense that you can move it somewhere else where AT protocol data can just live anywhere and is then aggregated by a separate app like bluesky

tho in blueskys case you can choose to have bluesky host yr data too which most people do, and with activitypub/mastadon theres an aspect of aggregation too with their federation system, also bluesky is hooked into the federation system too

but roughly id say that with activitypub/mastadon the data and the application are colocated theyre parts of the same program and with ATprotocol/bluesky theyre not

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 15 November 2024 00:14 (twelve hours ago) link

I just joined bluesky and started following you Ned, but jeez, you have put up almost 12,000 posts already?

For me it's about finding people I want to follow, since I don't really post.

It's going to be painful to transfer from twitter/x. I have done a lot of work to curate my feed there to include just accounts I really like hearing from (authors, musicians, artists, writers, science and weather and medical nerds, friends, articulate people angry about politics who I feel aligned with, legitimate reporters who I don't currently hate etc). It's easy to block trolls and ads that you don't like

I'm not going to give twitter up in the near future, I like it too much. I will just maybe see who among the people I like to follow is moving over there permanently and see whether or not there will end up being a critical mass.

A lot of my favorite accounts have already left twitter, but I have no idea where they went, they didn't all go to bluesky.

Dan S, Friday, 15 November 2024 00:23 (twelve hours ago) link

So I started curating my Bluesky account while the election was in full swing so I have a lot of political stuff popping up in my feed and now I hate it and never want to see it again until at some point I'll want to see it again.

Can I mute posts by keyword and later remove it? I don't want to unfollow all of those accounts because in 3.5 years I might want to see what's going on but for now I'm jitter scrolling, trying not to look at anything about our current hellscape.

Same. I wouldn't say its painful but its worth just having a Blue Sky account. Every time there has been a 'migration' I just look and add a few more and refine just in case there is a collapse in twitter. Otherwise the follower/ing count is slightly down from Americans moving but there is more than enough left.
