the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

I'd seen her posting around twitter/bluesky before, but she's mostly known for in some way verifying whether Palestinians on bsky asking for donations are legit and boosting their requests. whether this verification is reasonable is under fire

two recent things popped off: a number of scammers pretending to be in Gaza grifting in replies that the bsky team has addressed by, questionably in some circles, suspending accounts or adding spam labels. the second is that a lawyer quoted one of her posts about sending money to people with bank accounts in countries that would more easily get the aid to Gazans and said that it'd be a good way to get arrested for federal financial crimes

my own evaluation is that I have no strong opinions on any of this

Yeah I mean I appreciate that Bluesky-ers are friendly to mutual aid requests and the like but the possibility of scamming when it’s online (and not local mutual aid) is high.

The issue with Shah is that she was explicitly laying out a scheme that would subject anyone who followed it to criminal penalties, and then said "oh i don't do this myself, I have boundaries". she also seems to have no real background in anything...she's a freelance writer an 'social media consultant' who left the US and moved to Berlin. Some people were saying she was a lawyer; that doesn't appear to be true. Her name is now being used by every alleged Gaza account asking for money, saying they are 'verified by Molly Shah'. I don't know how she is 'verifying' anyone.

and of course when actual lawyers pointed out that what shah was advocating was an extremely bad idea that would lead to people being debanked and facing federal prison sentences, well-meaning idiots got extremely angry at them and accused them of calling all palestinians terrorists etc.

shah also bizarrely threatened to sue people for defamation for telling her this was a bad idea

I doubt anyone’s going to get rolled up on for throwing a few bucks to a gofundme, but who knows in this political climate?

having read and listened to some coverage of what happened in the Holy Land Foundation case, I think there are some chilling possibilities

no one claimed that donating to gofundmes is a legal risk (although it's been pointed out that many unfortunately appear to be obvious scams) but shah was actively recruiting people to be the receivers for donations which is a gigantic legal risk

yeah, I didn’t mean to imply gofundme was inherently a risk, other than some well-meaning commenters thinking gofundme does any sort of vetting

the people coordinating donations, any financial transactions that obviously will fall under scrutiny like wiring money to italy in order for an intermediary to send money… I’d be very cautious

The interesting thing is that I don't own pets and I'm not really interested in pictures of other people's pets. I guess "pet pictures" has just become a synecdoche for "hey, if you're feeling bad, here's something you can feel good about". Those segments they used to do at the end of the news, you know, for people who couldn't take the constant drumbeat of awful things. "And now, the lighter side!" It didn't work for me then and it doesn't work for me now. I kind of feel the same way about pictures of the sky. The sky's right outside. I just walked outside and checked. It's still there. I'm not Anne Frank. I can go outside and even walk around. I actually just bought a deck chair so I can spend more time outside. The sky is nice. The air is nice.

The plus side is that I didn't see any really traumatic, triggering content. I do get triggered pretty easily, but looking at Gavin Newsom doesn't trigger me. It's a definite improvement over past social media experiences I've had. There's not the sudden mood whiplash that past social media evoked.

I just... I have no idea what's going on right now. Pictures of videos and animals are all well and good, but I'm... _genuinely optimistic_, in a _practical_ sense. And I don't know how to express that. I don't know how to live that.

Since the NBA season ended last night, here's my self indulgent take on where Sports Bluesky is atm. The TLDR is that crappy Resistance accounts are working like antibodies to flush casual sports ppl off this platform and the devs should address this if they actually want sports to take off here.

using a social media platform like Twitter/Bluesky during a televised sporting event that many people are watching is one of the truly great uses of a platform like this ... *if* there are enough sports people on it.

if Bluesky is doing something to keep sports fans away, that's a mistake. they should be actively courting the leagues, writers/personalities, meme accounts, etc.

i guarantee you there are millions of people who would like to bail on Twitter but don't because of the sports presence.
