the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

if you go by the internet, Terry Pratchett is the most culturally important writer of the past 50 years, but if you live in the real world I suspect you could go through 100 people before you ran into someone who even knew who he was (admittedly this ratio is probably different in the UK)

I am a big fan of his Truckers trilogy for reading to my kids, though both are now too old. Did read maybe 15 Discworld novels around the age of 11-15 but haven't revisited since then and no great desire to, I'm happy if people get a lot from them but there's too much to be a casual fan so I'm out.
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 11 August 2026 10:15 (five days ago)
Like sic says, I think the issue was the curious misunderstanding of dead author's joke, rather than TP as untouchable guru. Otherwise I don't think it's *that* unusual that people are protective of a well-liked dead guy's writing

One thing that's interesting to me about all of the recent invocations of "woke 1" is that people seem to be pinning it to 2020-21 -- basically, post-George Floyd racial reckoning stuff, COVID opening up the potential to reimagine social and economic structures, etc. And maybe that's maybe where it peaked as a political force.
But I'd say it really starts in the early 2010s with the birth of Black Lives Matter. And then of course Me Too came about in 2017. As a term, I feel like "woke" went mainstream in like 2016. I can never forget that former Michigan governor tweeted during the DNC that year that Tim Kaine was "woke" (quotes hers).
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 August 2026 20:25 (three days ago)
Jennifer Granholm, that is
I remember in late 2016 and early 2017 lots of people were using the phrase "performative woke"
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 13 August 2026 20:27 (three days ago)
It really felt like woke hit the mainstream around when Ta-Nehisi Coates' reparations article came out in 2014.

― Oaf To Joy (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 14 August 2026 20:54 (two days ago)
As far as I’m aware, folx was never meant to be about gender neutrality and it was never meant to replace or improve on the word folks. It was meant to be a coded way to communicate “folks like us” among people with radical politics who defy gender and sexual norms.https://radicalcopyeditor.com/2016/09/12/folx/Folks is already a gender-neutral term, but changing the spelling of the word brings a visible sign of inclusion of Black, Asian, Latine, Indigenous, Queer, Trans and other minoritized communities that have been historically excluded from mainstream usage of folks. Folx' is not just a word; it is a recognition of diverse experiences and a conscious acknowledgement of identities that may otherwise feel unacknowledged or invisible. In its core, folx signifies a more inclusive spectrum of identities, affirming their existence and relevance within our societal discourse. In other words, when people, workplaces and other entities use the word folx, they want to be intentional towards embracing a broader, more radical inclusivity.https://www.queerspacecollective.org/post/challenging-the-norms-for-radical-inclusivity-unpacking-folks-and-folx-from-a-queer-intersectional

― Oaf To Joy (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 14 August 2026 23:17 (two days ago)
In this age of texting and net-speak 'folx' seems harmless and unexceptional, just another little nose-thumb at the world of standard orthography in a world overflowing with such stuff. It seems far too timid a gesture to carry all the weight it's being asked to carry in that declaration from queerspacecollective.org.

I think there’s a very small subset of people who can pull off casual socially-inclusive language and of course one of the long-form definition pages is from what appears to be a consultancy group?
the kind of word use that makes sense within defined spaces but when it breaks containment it’s either in corporate training explaining the terms, but not explaining why hr should not use them in your fortune 500 company’s internal newsletter. or the local hippie coffee shop that keeps posting “folx” as a greeting on facebook while doing obvious wage theft
