if you go by the internet, Terry Pratchett is the most culturally important writer of the past 50 years, but if you live in the real world I suspect you could go through 100 people before you ran into someone who even knew who he was (admittedly this ratio is probably different in the UK)

i had heard the name discworld but i didnt know anything more than it was a scifi book but recently i watched a couple youtube videos about the terry pratchett literary universe so now im up on it, its nothing i would read but i liked the idea how there are all these wacky books thatre connected in some way

i only ever finished the Tiffany Aching books which I think are really good; I tired for years to get through The Colour of Magic and could not (I am aware that everyone says don't start there)

you don’t have to have read or have heard of Pratchett to go on a different website and say “you have to hand it to Will Stancil for being too stupid to understand Vimes’ boots theory,” luckily

I am a big fan of his Truckers trilogy for reading to my kids, though both are now too old. Did read maybe 15 Discworld novels around the age of 11-15 but haven't revisited since then and no great desire to, I'm happy if people get a lot from them but there's too much to be a casual fan so I'm out.

One thing that's interesting to me about all of the recent invocations of "woke 1" is that people seem to be pinning it to 2020-21 -- basically, post-George Floyd racial reckoning stuff, COVID opening up the potential to reimagine social and economic structures, etc. And maybe that's maybe where it peaked as a political force.

But I'd say it really starts in the early 2010s with the birth of Black Lives Matter. And then of course Me Too came about in 2017. As a term, I feel like "woke" went mainstream in like 2016. I can never forget that former Michigan governor tweeted during the DNC that year that Tim Kaine was "woke" (quotes hers).
