the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

I made it by fitting a recommendation-engine style model with dot products to predict the probability that a person X follows person Y with 128-dim dimensions for "following" and "followers" and then squishing the followers embeddings into 2D with various iterations of tSNE.

The only information used to place you on the map is that the types of people who follow you also follow other people in that area of the map.

The only information used to label the "clusters" is 30 profile bios randomly chosen from that cluster, which an LLM is asked to identify the commonalities in. So the name given to a cluster is not something that applies to everyone in it.
