the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 15 November 2024 00:14 (sixteen hours ago) link

I just joined bluesky and started following you Ned, but jeez, you have put up almost 12,000 posts already?

For me it's about finding people I want to follow, since I don't really post.

It's going to be painful to transfer from twitter/x. I have done a lot of work to curate my feed there to include just accounts I really like hearing from (authors, musicians, artists, writers, science and weather and medical nerds, friends, articulate people angry about politics who I feel aligned with, legitimate reporters who I don't currently hate etc). It's easy to block trolls and ads that you don't like

I'm not going to give twitter up in the near future, I like it too much. I will just maybe see who among the people I like to follow is moving over there permanently and see whether or not there will end up being a critical mass.

A lot of my favorite accounts have already left twitter, but I have no idea where they went, they didn't all go to bluesky.

Dan S, Friday, 15 November 2024 00:23 (sixteen hours ago) link

So I started curating my Bluesky account while the election was in full swing so I have a lot of political stuff popping up in my feed and now I hate it and never want to see it again until at some point I'll want to see it again.

Can I mute posts by keyword and later remove it? I don't want to unfollow all of those accounts because in 3.5 years I might want to see what's going on but for now I'm jitter scrolling, trying not to look at anything about our current hellscape.

I've also been on bsky since June 2023 and I have 900 posts.

Yes. I have muted the incoming president's last name and it's been very helpful. I may start muting RFK, Gaetz, and other words I don't feel like reading.

Same. I wouldn't say its painful but its worth just having a Blue Sky account. Every time there has been a 'migration' I just look and add a few more and refine just in case there is a collapse in twitter. Otherwise the follower/ing count is slightly down from Americans moving but there is more than enough left.

It's sort of an embarrassing thing to do, but I did it on Twitter in two situations: 1) That tweet from this morning didn't do the numbers I expected, maybe I'll post it later on today or tomorrow to see if it will take off. 2) That tweet I posted a few weeks/months/years ago is newly relevant, so I'll add it to the current discourse.

Taylor Lorenz on her Substack re Bluesky:

As I’ve said many times on my podcast Power User, Meta’s overly aggressive blunt moderation systems, its decision to down rank and shadow ban journalists and anyone who speaks about social justice issues, and it's total unwillingness to act as a home for real-time information, means it will never truly occupy the space that Twitter once was.

For now, Bluesky seems to be the winner, but what it really won was a declining user base of people who, as Intercept journalist Sam Biddle put it, have "theater kid energy" and "the vibes of an RA trying to organize a dorm activity"

Is there even a point to embracing a new text-based posting app in 2024 when, as Biddle notes, all Bluesky users are really doing is posting to a niche social network that no one really sees in an effort to “basically LARP using Twitter?

Ultimately, I agree with Garbage Day’s Ryan Broderick who wrote: “[Bluesky] still doesn’t feel like a one-stop shop for the kinds of memes or news stories that Twitter was in its heyday or TikTok is now. In other words, it doesn’t feel quite ready to be the main artery of the internet. And some of its most passionate super users, many of which are burned out Twitter refugees who decamped for a quieter network, don’t seem to really want that to happen ever.”

the theater kid energy group was at its peak in the month or so when I arrived (50% those people and TPOT refugees, 50% trans shitposters). and then it mostly went away.

unfortunately she's wrong that it's gone. it's back right now because of the arrival of resistance accounts that pretend to be jack smith and the cromulent fuckstubble gen x types.
