ha i thought that would catch your eye.

leadership here is as sus as threads or twitter. like jack, they seem to share a lot of intellectual heritage with thiel, although i'm sure they'd deny it (60s bay area libertarianism, girard, etc.) but with burning man and shitposting (as an alibi for race wierdness) and some weird fash-adjacent stuff about nature.

"I joined ello but lord only knows when I was last on it or if the account still exists"

the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

theres no heating in kathamadu but it gets cold enough there in the winter that you might like some heat but maybe you dont really need it but still if you get cold it feels like theres no way to get warm

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 23:24 (three weeks ago)

friend of mine is from bogota shes telling me because its at the equator and at elevation its basically just 65f every day of the year there are no seasons some months it rains more but its not a real monsoon or anything, sounds nice but also weird idk

My wife is from Medellin and she says it's kinda like that there, too, plus they have the shelter of being in a mountain valley. Just really nice weather all the time, no extremes.

i have a neighbour with a window unit which they're very pleased with but they never move it out of the window because it weighs approximately 5 million pounds so it just stays there all year

In our NJ apartment we had two window units that we never took down; we sealed them in there nice and tight with cardboard and duct tape. In fact, we left them there when we moved out for the next people to enjoy. But they were really only good enough to cool off the room they were in, so we also had a "portable" unit which we lugged up from the basement and plugged in during the "hot months" (which by the time we left was from about April to October) to cool the living room. When we ran all three at once, with all interior doors open, during June, July and August, the apartment could get very nice.

In the house we're currently renting, we have central air/heat. But we're at 3000 feet elevation where NJ was 20 feet above sea level, and we're in a valley surrounded by mountains, and the house is tucked away under tall trees, and we live by the shore of a huge lake, and it's been unseasonably cool and rainy (it's in the mid 50s to low 60s lately, and it's been raining a lot), so we've only had to turn the AC on a half dozen times this year.

The demented it thing about baked beans in America is that they're not vegetarian, unless you specially seek out a veggie version. Also the cans are twice the size of the UK.

Alba, Monday, 29 June 2026 19:32 (three weeks ago)

Twice the size of the UK version, that is. Twice the size of the UK would be taking the piss even for gluttonous USA.

Alba, Monday, 29 June 2026 19:33 (three weeks ago)

Ranch style beans are the best beans straight from the can.

Black beans are the very best after sprucing up.

feel like there's some generational vitriol directed england-ward that my gen didn't have

― J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, June 27, 2026 10:34 AM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

my little piece of anecdata on this is getting to know a gen z guy, gay even, and hearing him direct minor ire toward england on a somewhat regular basis. with my gen it was cool to be an anglophile.

i blame viral ragebait content meant to heighten the contrasts (read: narcissism of small differences) between ppl from anglophone countries, much more likely to be consumed by younger gens than, idk, the fuckin beatles or whatever

big boodith judith (m bison), Monday, 29 June 2026 20:21 (three weeks ago)

kinda waayyyyyy downstream of the general tendency of online media to prime ppl for fascism, like these people who are different from you are BAD and you are BETTER bc you belong to the GOOD GROUP, not saying its Actual Fascism or anything

big boodith judith (m bison), Monday, 29 June 2026 20:22 (three weeks ago)

tbf to the youth you'd have to be demented to develop anglophilia in the 21st century. harry potter probably the last possible portal for that and look what happened there

to be less fair, I can see both what m. bison is saying and a shitposting leftist version where "England" is eternally synonymous with colonialism & imperialism and nothing else (CaAAL already explained why this is actually reactionary)

my first thought did go to "ranch dressing style beans"

Me too, and it was a horrifying thought.

I had never had ranch dressing in a non-salad context until moving to Montana. It's not really a thing in New Jersey, especially not in the heavily Latino city I lived in for 30 years. But out here I get offered it all the time, and it tastes really good on onion rings.

wipes chooser (unperson), Monday, 29 June 2026 21:08 (three weeks ago)

Hahaha that is what I was thinking, along with “exactly how high would I need to be to eat beans steeped in ranch dressing”

an acquaintance was telling me that his wife went on a work trip to several locations as part of a human resources training thing, and when her group ate at a restaurant in York, Nebraska the wait staff put two carafes down on the table before they ordered

the first was obviously a carafe of water for refilling their glasses. the second? a full carafe of ranch dressing

mh, Monday, 29 June 2026 21:24 (three weeks ago)

Boston baked beans are vile. It’s the overprocessed piece of pork belly fat floating in each can that gives me the boak. Assuming ranch beans are similar.

i was a bit of a "tea-a-boo" when i was younger - grew up with doctor who and all that. i got on the internet fairly early - when i was '17, in '93... and being a fan of doctor who and pink floyd, i learned fairly quickly that people who actually had to _live_ in england were sometimes less than enthusiastic to hear idealistic teenagers who only knew about them from tv talk about how great their country was. for whatever reason i've found myself since then in a lot of spaces with heavy british representation (more than the internet at large, i mean). i've, uh, kind of disengaged with british culture since the corbyn thing... i am _not_ equipped to argue with anyone about the nuances of british anti-semitism. i know how grim america is now... from my perspective, britain has been that grim for a fucking decade now.

looking back i think my past anglophilia was also to some degree motivated by my family, who were of irish descent and thought of themselves as "irish". i was tired of hearing about the Troubles and the potato famine and Parnell and all that. well, my family don't think of themselves as irish now, and the actual irish people i know seem alright to me, even if some of them do seem to drink rather a lot.
