ha i thought that would catch your eye.

leadership here is as sus as threads or twitter. like jack, they seem to share a lot of intellectual heritage with thiel, although i'm sure they'd deny it (60s bay area libertarianism, girard, etc.) but with burning man and shitposting (as an alibi for race wierdness) and some weird fash-adjacent stuff about nature.

the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 3 August 2023 21:42 (one year ago) link

No, that didn't do it. When I send an email (to myself) through that portal, by clicking on my screen name, it just sends to my original login ID, which is an old email address. But when I try to change that old login address to a new login address, my current email, it logs me out, because it no longer matches the one associated with the password. Hmm.

its called the atmosphere now

Paul Frazee @pfrazee.com‬
We talk about Bluesky getting users, but Bluesky is part of an open social internet called "The Atmosphere" where other people can make their own apps, including their own versions of Bluesky.

Bluesky isn't growing; the Atmosphere is! You're not "our" users; you're a part of a shared place.

Always fascinated by this bottomless pit of VC model of 'eventual success' (it gets bought/it becomes the dominant player). One of the devs was saying the other day that every image that gets uploaded gets scanned (for content moderation aiui)

https://bsky.app/profile/aaron.bsky.team/post/3l2x3kn2iok2z

even allowing for the fractional cost per image, they must be rinsing through the cash on opex, and about to introduce video too. I guess at the moment the theory of success is relatively easy - 'Twitter is in a pretty fast tailspin in terms of users and value and for the moment it makes sense for us to keep hoovering up a percentage of users and building new features.'

the model just seems massively incentivised to produce platforms that never reach operating stability and are always being tweaked to the detriment of the user (hello Spotify).

Fizzles, Monday, 2 September 2024 10:06 (one month ago) link

iiuc their infra costs are mostly scaling sublinearly with users because they made some unusual (these days) decisions re: on prem vs. cloud and just buying the biggest servers they could afford.

bluesky trust and safety gut going galaxy brain

Aaron Rodericks ✧@aa✧✧✧.b✧✧✧.t✧✧✧‬
The inversion principle is a powerful tool I use to shift my perspective and uncover blind spots. Consider this example: "I was repeatedly rude to this person because they are bad." Here, user A labels themselves as good, justifying rudeness to user B, whom they've labeled as bad. 1/7

the classically successful ban the people who tell nazis to fuck off approach to moderation

Aaron Rodericks ✧@aa✧✧✧.b✧✧✧.t✧✧✧‬
T&S policies should focus on behaviors (e.g., treating others with respect), regardless of the direction of rudeness. Otherwise, policies could be weaponized to favor one group over another repeatedly. 3/7

Thats best <3

I still dont really use BSky, I guess for the same reason I never used Twitter, I just dont "get it". I think my mode of discourse/internet usage is stuck in 2002, forums and blogs. I just find the concept of twitter (and dischord) way too rapidfire and ephemeral for my taste. I'm the same with video "shorts"/"stories", yuck, why is everyone's attention span suddenly only 60 seconds long.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 12 September 2024 00:48 (three weeks ago) link

Yeah, to me message boards are superior because they don’t have the hierarchy of a Personality posting and a bunch people either agreeing with it, attacking it or trying to get you to watch their video underneath.

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 September 2024 02:04 (three weeks ago) link

Bluesky does seem a bit more conversational than Twitter, but perhaps only because it’s smaller and doesn’t have as many well-known posters on it at this point.

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 September 2024 02:05 (three weeks ago) link

Yeah. And its funny, my initial internet "social" experience was on IRC, which was the precursor to Discord, and I thought nothing of being able to hold 2 or 3 group chats and half a dozen private chats all at the same time. I guess my brain was a lot more sharp/focussed in my 20s. I could NOT do that now.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 12 September 2024 02:10 (three weeks ago) link

Whats all the whingeing about "echo chamber" about? See this is what I hated about Twitter and I guess this will go the same way - people who are Chronically Online talk in these places like they think everyone else who is time poor and cant look at a socmed stream 94/7 will totally know what theyre on about :(

I just want somewhere to chat with my friends, and everything has become so splintered I cant find anywhere where they're all prepared to be anymore.

my main beef with bsky is that it's very US-centric. i really don't care to read the 34530th joke about RFK Jr's extramarital affairs cause i really do not give a shit about presidential also-rans from the other side of the world

also literally nothing happens on the app until the Americans are up by which time I'm already in bed.

Can't really do anything about it though - god knows I've tried to get more irl friends to get on it but no one really has, most are still on the bird app
