the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

I'm not even sure how my ilxmail works. Is that just the address I used to originally sign up/register? My login ID? How do I change that without re-registering?

No, that didn't do it. When I send an email (to myself) through that portal, by clicking on my screen name, it just sends to my original login ID, which is an old email address. But when I try to change that old login address to a new login address, my current email, it logs me out, because it no longer matches the one associated with the password. Hmm.

using a social media platform like Twitter/Bluesky during a televised sporting event that many people are watching is one of the truly great uses of a platform like this ... *if* there are enough sports people on it.

if Bluesky is doing something to keep sports fans away, that's a mistake. they should be actively courting the leagues, writers/personalities, meme accounts, etc.

i guarantee you there are millions of people who would like to bail on Twitter but don't because of the sports presence.

It’s okay over there, though I have determined I am too earnest for Twitter and too cynical for Bluesky, and thus am looking for a secret third microblogging platform. Right now I like to post innocuous opinions about extremely popular old bands, or super vague opinions about music in general, just because the Bluesky folks seem to love that kind of thing. I’ll say “you know who really rocked? THE BEATLES” and get 20 replies being like “yes! Have you heard ‘Yellow Submarine’?”

Whiney Nate Silver with a complaint on X about Bluesky. An in the weeds one --but cocky conservatives and centrists there agree with him. Meanwhile Silver is of course getting slammed on Bluesky itself

Electorally speaking it's more important for Democrats to avoid Blueskyism than leftism. Not that Bluesky is important but it embodies all the characteristics that make progressivism unappealing to normal people. If you could subtract those the left would win more often.

X being X, and considering who likes Silver now, many people there are agreeing with him, while some are just raising questions as they're unclear what he means. Here's some random x comments--

Blueskyism is just Tumblr with professional degrees, OWS general assemblies, and people like HCR hawking their preachy Substacks to their own choir.

The trouble with this is that Blueskyism is the animating faith of the organizer–activist–NGO caste, the very class that anchors the Democratic base and rules its primaries.

Hard to disagree with Yglesias’s take: geriatric Dem leadership will eventually be replaced with younger members who are better at social media (firing up the Blueskyites) who will then lose, by greater margins. Only then can a true reckoning of the party take place.

As a centrist, I only follow former Republicans on Bluesky & find the engagement much more civil there than X. Ideas can actually be expressed w/o the automatic name calling that happens here. Progressive Bluesky does get testier, but still not as bad as X.

Can we get a definition for “blueskyism”? I’ve followed your work for several years, but I have never heard you say this term and I have no idea what it means.
