Another place they put really small text is on the backs of smoke detectors. Seriously…how do they expect elders to be able to read the legend that shows what the beeps and colored lights mean…

wait ... the backs? As in the part that gets affixed to the ceiling or elevated surface? I am confused. ... also in aging eyesight anecdotes, if I need to refer to text on a piece of paper, I now have to put it on the side where my "strong eye" is, because if I put it on the other side ... you guessed it, blurry!

Sara yea the backs! We had one that wouldn’t stop beeping (of course at 3 am) so I had to tear it out of its wiring on the ceiling. Safe and fun

am going to need reading glasses soon I think. I thought I might already need them because have been having trouble reading v small print like on medication leaflets since last autumn, but noticed if I take off my glasses (which are for myopia not reading) then I can still manage it. but presumably that won't work for too much longer.

my near sight started to go a few years back and experience as follows:

varifocals now dont have a line or anything fyi they ask you to focus on a dot and do something clever with the shaping of the lens itself

I’m putting it off for as long as possible and pretending it will never happen

I got too old for this thread a few months ago. But just saying that feeling for the first time when you realise you can't read small text anymore is so deflating, it's a much worse feeling than an itch you can't scratch. It's like solid mass turning into a mirage and taking the piss out of you. I've got used to it now but it is still rage inducing that they have such small text on the printed stickers on prescription drugs boxes.

i had my readers on my night stand, but now they travel to the couch, the kitchen counter, etc. looks like i need another pair or two.

the worst is directions on pills / supplements / multivitamins. like, i can't understand how i could have ever read them without a magnifying glass.

i would take this vitamin a supplement but i can't find my glasses to find out what the right dose is

on the other hand, it's pretty fun to do a milhouse voice "my glaaaasssesss, where are my glaaasses" every time i can't find them

not to one-up you but i lost the first 43 years of my life

I can read small print, no bother, without glasses. Then again, if I wear my normal glasses, no chance.

Have you considered printing out the smoke detector instructions in large print? This being the 40+ thread where we grew up with paper manuals for things…

I have gone from no glasses at all to cannot read at all without glasses in about 5 years, not sure if it's just that my eyes have adjusted to them or if it will get worse

still take them off to see long distance, but driving with the satnav on means perching the things on the end of my nose, the solution would seem to be varifocals I guess, don't even turn 44 until Sunday.

I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of readers. And the cheap price tag!

I kept thinking, Crap, I don't want to go back to the optometrist and pay $350 for glasses.

I had been doing readers for a long time, but they were getting annoying. They'd break often and I didn't like doubling up when I wore my regular glasses. Finally got progressive lens glasses and bifocal contacts, big improvement. I highly recommend them.

i just struggled to read a fish food label for 5 minutes because of the small type

Tell me more about bifocal contacts, please. This is different than doing two different contacts for near/close correction? I tried that one and didn’t last an hour.

the thing that complicates things more is my astigmatism... it's one of the things that makes me a bad driver, my peripheral vision is trash. you know how you're supposed to flick your eyes to the side to check your rear and side views? yeah i always just turn my head. YES I KNOW THIS IS BAD.

Not sure about "bad astigmatism," but I have contacts that correct mine

I have two astigmatisms and my contact lenses are designed for it and help me see but other than that lol

i hated contacts even before transition, these days having big femme glasses is kind of a must for me haha

My 10 yo looked at my phone and said “why is everything so big?” I was like, “I’m old”

hi there, i am both 40 and also have experience trying several different contacts to correct my bad astigmatism in my right eye. in short: there are many different brands that claim to do it, and in my experience they all suck. at least for me, they end up irritating my eye, in some cases even making it bloodshot, but usually just feeling uncomfortable, making me blink a lot, lots of taking it out and cleaning it and putting it back in, etc.

after years of wearing just one contact (on my non-astigmatic but just plain bad vision left eye), i finally got glasses a few years ago and will likely never go back

i've never read this thread, but i'm gonna guess it involves lower back pain
