I have gone from no glasses at all to cannot read at all without glasses in about 5 years, not sure if it's just that my eyes have adjusted to them or if it will get worse

still take them off to see long distance, but driving with the satnav on means perching the things on the end of my nose, the solution would seem to be varifocals I guess, don't even turn 44 until Sunday.

this has been happening to me too. i take a picture of it with my phone and then zoom in :/

There’s a free app called Mag Lite that has saved my ass. It activates the flashlight on your phone and has a zoom feature. It only takes a second or 2 to fire up, too, unlike pretty much every other app I use. I use it all the time for menus in hip restaurants and instructions on pill bottles etc.

I went to the Apple Store and the staffer in his 20s opened up my air pods case and read the tiny serial number inside the flip cover. I was like what is this magic

calstars, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 21:26 (one year ago) link

I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of readers. And the cheap price tag!

I kept thinking, Crap, I don't want to go back to the optometrist and pay $350 for glasses.

pplains, Wednesday, 19 July 2023 13:47 (one year ago) link

I had been doing readers for a long time, but they were getting annoying. They'd break often and I didn't like doubling up when I wore my regular glasses. Finally got progressive lens glasses and bifocal contacts, big improvement. I highly recommend them.

Tell me more about bifocal contacts, please. This is different than doing two different contacts for near/close correction? I tried that one and didn’t last an hour.

the thing that complicates things more is my astigmatism... it's one of the things that makes me a bad driver, my peripheral vision is trash. you know how you're supposed to flick your eyes to the side to check your rear and side views? yeah i always just turn my head. YES I KNOW THIS IS BAD.

hi there, i am both 40 and also have experience trying several different contacts to correct my bad astigmatism in my right eye. in short: there are many different brands that claim to do it, and in my experience they all suck. at least for me, they end up irritating my eye, in some cases even making it bloodshot, but usually just feeling uncomfortable, making me blink a lot, lots of taking it out and cleaning it and putting it back in, etc.

after years of wearing just one contact (on my non-astigmatic but just plain bad vision left eye), i finally got glasses a few years ago and will likely never go back

z_tbd, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 15:55 (one year ago) link

i've never read this thread, but i'm gonna guess it involves lower back pain

I've walked a *lot* this year but shit my left big toe is hurting right now. I have a voice that keeps whispering GOUT, but, despite my old man suffering from it a fair bit, I don't think it's that. Wear and tear?

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 14 October 2023 23:31 (one year ago) link

I just passed the threshold for 40's thread this year, but interloping here about my ankle. I have a clear memory of a doc telling me pre the ankle surgery "this is a life changing injury" and cocky early 30's me thinking 'tone it down grandpops, I'm indestructible'. But this piece of metal in my ankle has no doubt been life changing in all sorts of shit ways. I have been limping since my mid 30's and had all sorts of problems and persistent low to mid level pain with it.

But unexpectedly the condition of the ankle has also got better the older I get. The doc gave me a door hinge analogy about my broken ankle at the time and suggested it likely will cause a lot of discomfort but will be justified in the long term - it seems like he wasn't talking absolute shite!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 15 October 2023 00:02 (one year ago) link

it seems like joints generally get worse with age, so at least you’ve got the one replacement part that just needed some breaking in?

but generally at the moment I think my plated right ankle does actually feel better than lefty. It's got bionic powers.

I'm close to ending my '40s and I still feel in top condition. I lost a lot of weight in 2016 and have kept it off, I scrupulously watch my diet (it's no longer a problem, nor do I need to relax it on vacation), work out every day, drink coffee only in the morning, drink booze moderately during the week. Smoking a bit more after those drinks when there are other friends has become a problem I need to watch, however.

If it weren't for that feel pretty much the same as when I was 30ish. Prob need a new RX soon but I'm not gonna complain too much cause so far I've gotten off v easy.

calstars, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:40 (one year ago) link

I'll be 50 in six and a half months. I was thinking today at work that I can't put off getting a new glasses prescription anymore. It's definitely going to be for varifocals. I was trying to read the text on a label and the usual trick of alternating between looking over the top of my glasses and holding the item at near arms length was no longer cutting it. On the other hand, I'm regaining the reasonably flat stomach.

Can we talk about foot problems?

― sarahell

i fell in the garage during the time i was coming out. only boot i can wear is an unna boot.

i've always had some serious issues with my feet. used to walk like a duck, or anton lavey. "learning to walk like a woman", for me, was basically the same as "learning to walk".

anyway i got what i call "susan foreman ankle" and the doctors call "chronic ankle instability". i liked walking a lot when i was younger. helped clear my head, helped keep me in shape. now if i walk more than a mile or so my the outside of my left foot starts hurting like the dickens. i did three months of physical therapy but there's apparently permanent nerve damage.

i keep working myself up to scheduling myself for another physical therapist referral. my foot, for one, but my scoliosis has also been causing me a lot of trouble lately. i'm wondering if i'm getting herniated on the left side. it's mostly thoracic pain. doing a lot of tissue massage. it's like one of those things you'd see in a nora ephron comedy or something, you can hear a hitachi buzzing and i'm making these moans of pleasure and when you actually get to see me i'm fully clothed and using it on my back, like, you know, it was designed for. i mean, i'm asexual, what did you _think_ i was doing with it?

i really am looking forward to growing old, not just because dying of natural causes is considered "winning" in my demographic, but because god i am _really_ going to enjoy making other people uncomfortable by talking about my medical history in detail.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 19 October 2023 21:59 (one year ago) link

I like to walk too and my ailment is a vague discomfort at the joint that connects the big toe to the foot upon flexing

From 19-20 I had a constant sinus infection and the college health center's solution was to sell me 500 count bottles of pseudoephedrine for $8, I was taking 15-20 a day and I can't be sure there was a direct correlation but eventually I had my first gout attack. Fucked me up good several times a year for over a decade no matter what I ate/drank or weighed. Finally discovered Febucip (allopurinol didn't work) and started buying it from a pharmacy in India. Haven't had a twinge in seven or eight years even as I've cut down to 40mg every other day (and sometimes every third day).
