If you think of it in terms of it being able to be used as collateral for actual money … like you can’t buy groceries with a fractional share of land, same with many other necessities that require payments in cash or cash equivalents. Granted if you have no cash AND no land, then you are really fucked.

sarahell, Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:42 (two years ago)

xp oh ok i was talking about finance stuff, mortgages etc not structural issues. maybe the steak needing a fridge confused it. at least we can agree that land is like other assets (they all help you become wealthier and require some maintenance) even if we can’t agree on whether its more akin to owning a business or owning a car (which in the case of a taco truck could be a business) or owning a principality

the late great, Thursday, 27 July 2023 04:11 (two years ago)

I mean you’re still putting up the fundamental difference that has been pushed back at you: cars go down in value, as do steaks, land (GENERALLY) does not. It’s neither steak nor car nor business for an owner occupier, it’s an asset. No need for confusing analogies which just get further away from the truth

Sarahell writes:

Um, yes you kinda can? Maybe you shouldn't but you totally can.

A landowner or homeowner can call or visit a bank and say "I would like a $50,000 line of credit based on the $500,000 of equity I have in my home and/or property. Oh, also, while you're at it, give me an extra $5,000 in cash."

Then you go buy groceries with that. It's surprisingly easy.

(It may not be a great idea, long term, but it is possible.)

xp i disagree that you are stating an ironclad truth, what else should i do?

the late great, Thursday, 27 July 2023 04:36 (two years ago)

lmaooooo try googling IS A CAR AN ASSET

the late great, Thursday, 27 July 2023 04:38 (two years ago)

i can’t anymore, i’m going to put on this dunce cap and watch glengarry glenross until i figure it out

the late great, Thursday, 27 July 2023 04:39 (two years ago)

I mean you could be generous with your interpretation of what I said and add in the appreciating/depreciating sub-clause that was obviously intended by the context, but yeah fair enough a car is an asset

hrep (H.P), Thursday, 27 July 2023 05:01 (two years ago)

seems like posting less might help

um, that was something I was referring to when I said "being able to be used as collateral for actual money" ... in some cases, the bank might say no. Banks do this. They say no to people who have too much debt, or they question whether there's that much equity in the property, depending on the property they might have questions about the title and other things that would delay getting the cash (e.g. racism often comes into play here)

sarahell, Thursday, 27 July 2023 13:48 (two years ago)

How many banks say yes to someone without any collateral?

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:06 (two years ago)

How do you do, fellow kids?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:17 (two years ago)

I am not arguing that property owners are disadvantaged vs people with the same degree of assets/wealth who aren’t real estate owners.

sarahell, Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:21 (two years ago)

I am saying that having liquid assets like cash and publicly traded stock is often better than owning real estate

sarahell, Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:23 (two years ago)

I have known people--not many, but some--who are saddled with properties they can neither afford nor sell, and who are essentially destitute, or at least not able to enjoy being "well off."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:23 (two years ago)

not this again

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:28 (two years ago)

I feel like milo’s example of elderly people with Section 8 housing or long-term rent control whose income is just their social security payments is probably a lot more common and also scarier tbh

sarahell, Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:32 (two years ago)

xpost so I can take my morning nap, is the argument here that people who have assets don't deserve to live or what is the thing

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:33 (two years ago)

I have no interest in arguing about finance. I freely admit that I don't really understand finance (or anything, really).

But exactly one time, my wife was pregnant so I went into a bank and said, "Hi, I have a bunch of dollars. Can I please live in a house?"

The bank said, "okay," and they let me live in a house.

Fifteen years later, I went back to the same bank and said, "Hi, remember me? I have part of a house. Can I please have some dollars?"

The bank said, "okay," and they let me have some dollars.

Really? I must get my wife pregnant.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 July 2023 15:08 (two years ago)

what have you people done here??

where i live - this is probably common - a house for $150,000 now sells for $300,000 because of pandemic and nobody can afford to sell because there is nowhere to move to because nobody can sell because there is nowhere to move to. because the prices are too high. its like the gift of the magi!

the history of the word chintz/y is pretty interesting

rob, Thursday, 27 July 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

The solution Scott, is to simply own two houses

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 00:34 (two years ago)

LOL I wish houses were even $300k where I live. Try starting at $900k for a small 2 bedroom house.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 28 July 2023 04:30 (two years ago)

Trayce otm ... that's what it's like where I live too.

sarahell, Friday, 28 July 2023 17:56 (two years ago)

Yeah a million dollars is the starting price hereabouts

Some people call me Maurice Chevalier (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 28 July 2023 18:01 (two years ago)

i live in a town that nobody was moving to before the pandemic. then the good people of Boston showed up. they got scared. there used to be 40 houses for sale at any given time. and now there is next to nothing. pretty huge difference. we are very close to amherst and northampton where prices were getting crazy before the plague. now they are just that much crazier.

scott seward, Friday, 28 July 2023 18:05 (two years ago)

table, this thread has gone away and i don't really want to revive it but if you were wondering why i called you a renowned queer history professor on here i honestly thought you were someone else. my bad. sorry. i've been away. though its more of a compliment than anything else...

scott seward, Saturday, 29 July 2023 16:04 (two years ago)

hey scott, it’s cool! i am merely a somewhat known queer poet and educator.

i legitimately couldn't figure out what "BJH" could stand for other than Barclay James Harvest

in my defense i've never actually heard barclay james harvest

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm sometimes amused that I've been posting here for over 15 years and still remain such a non-entity. Much like high school, this place can feel very cliquish and if you aren't in one of the right cliques, you kind of don't exist.

tl;dr; if you want me to kill a thread dead, let me know and I'll post and you can watch it sink!

I have never thought this about you if that means anything? To my mind, you are the poor guy who would post about working with some monster who’d burn microwave popcorn at work all the time? Cos that’s my association when I see your handle. Definitely not a nonentity.

In any case, don’t worry about that.

I've been here since the 1st month of ilx and im only known for polls even though I've hardly done any in years but its hardly an annoyance. I'd be fine with anonymity too tbh. Hence the DN changes now and again.

I've posted this exact sentiment in the past, right down to offering a similar threat at the end.

Lately I guess I've not been as hungry for connections and engagement here though, so it's not been as much of bother.
