I am backwards-educating right now. I got a respectable degree in English and philosophy 30 years ago and I am steadily endumbening myself.

i'm backwards-masking right now

hail satan

anybody who is interested in watching bill maher or jordan peterson or joe rogan should just watch this instead

it's longer than "office hours" but it's transer and bleaker

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 11 August 2023 20:38 (one year ago)

idk, it's interesting, at this point rogan, maher, hell, even _walsh_ are people i've chosen to just not care about. their bigotry and malicious lies are hurting people who belong to the same marginalized group as me and are making life way harder for all of us, and for a while i was really upset about that, but my being upset about that didn't actually help anything. all i managed to do was fuck up my own life worrying about shit i had no actual control over. i'm outsourcing that, too, allies, y'all can be upset about this shit on our behalf, ok? i'm just gonna try and live my best life here. i'm busy being upset about how the people who are supposed to be processing my FMLA paperwork are shitty and incompetent and keep losing the paperwork.

the crooked pub

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 12 August 2023 09:02 (one year ago)

Agree except I'd love to see the horrible couple who bought it clapped in irons.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Saturday, 12 August 2023 09:04 (one year ago)

it's not that I don't want all horrible rich property developers round up and executed with all the landlords. I'm just not a fan of over the top English quirkiness so don't care about the stupid pub.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 12 August 2023 09:28 (one year ago)

it was a nice pub. property developer arsonists, landlords and people who close pubs all need a good long gulaging

you're a sick man, Buddy Rich (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 12 August 2023 11:01 (one year ago)

the og gulag party bulldozed down loads of old revered buildings during their 5 yr plan, although this was churches rather than pubs! What lesson these locals need to take in from this experience is never vote for an MP of any party who has received donations from property developers. That would be a start at least and would be the end of Babs parliamentary career.

Ste, Saturday, 12 August 2023 12:02 (one year ago)

i'm blasting the first Masters of Reality album (the original on Def Jam not the reissue on Delicious Vinyl which is a whole other thing) in the store because that is what i do and i love this album so much and i was straining to think about WHY i loved it so much and what it was about it that made me immediately fall for it when i first heard it and then, you guessed it, i decided that i didn't really care why i love it. i just love it.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 August 2023 14:20 (one year ago)

why are there 300 separate news articles profiling that rich weirdo who's trying to "age backwards" by taking 150 pills a day and eating dinner at 11 AM and injecting himself with his son's blood? why are we supposed to care about this? what kind of deranged son of a bitch wants to actually live that way? who are these "experts" saying he's gonna live until he's 200? give me a fucking break, this dude's legacy is destined to be to have some brand new thyroid disease named after him

ffs there's a profile of this guy on the BBC News Channel right now. A gaunt weird looking 45 year old man wearing a lot of make up afaict.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Saturday, 12 August 2023 19:38 (one year ago)

guns 'n' roses. don't care. never have. will sing along with their songs in the car. will laugh at funny axl photos or funny stories about how dysfunctional they are. but i agree with siegbran on that g&r thread. they hit people at a certain age or time in their life when g&r made total sense. and i get that. like kiss. or pearl jam. or something else i never listen to. god bless them!

scott seward, Friday, 18 August 2023 17:08 (one year ago)

they had a pretty darn successful debut album that actually took awhile to gain traction, it was not an overnight hit at all... I think it was Sweet Child that made it finally pop

And then a racist acoustic album, then November Rain and mostly worthless garbage right up to the present day

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 18 August 2023 17:14 (one year ago)

Differentiating between November Rain and worthless garbage seems unnecessary there.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Saturday, 19 August 2023 05:19 (one year ago)

Listen, that acoustic album wasn't all racist.

pplains, Saturday, 19 August 2023 12:38 (one year ago)

They had that one song with the violent misogyny, for example.

brimstead, Saturday, 19 August 2023 16:39 (one year ago)

perhaps not the right thread for it but don’t really understand why people are praising a racist ahit band that used racist shit iconography throughout their careers.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 19 August 2023 17:18 (one year ago)

call it another case of The Year of Dialectical Thinking. I don't much enjoy Céline, though.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 August 2023 17:32 (one year ago)

Picking up from the last few posts, and as someone who has felt exasperation directed at me at times when I say I still love a couple of Polanski films and a whole bunch of songs by Chuck Berry, I'm glad I'm not the only one puzzled by this. Does "One in a Million" count for anything? Is it that people accept what the band always said--something about "distance," I think--that they put it down to being just words rather than actions, or is their hatred of that particular song simply understood and not worth mentioning?

clemenza, Saturday, 19 August 2023 21:41 (one year ago)

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 19 August 2023 21:45 (one year ago)

Honestly, I feel exactly the same way. I only bring it up because I'm forever intrigued by where that line exists right now.

clemenza, Saturday, 19 August 2023 21:46 (one year ago)

As ever, these are personal thresholds.

I like a few GNR songs. If I were writing about them professionally, I'd feel an obligation to mention how that sense of apocalypse conveyed by their arrangements also manifests itself in racist bilge like "One in a Million."

If xhuck still posted here, he'd offer his own explanation. The question's worth asking in the GNR thread, though.

Whether the Rolling Stones have a new album coming out or not - though that's been true for most of my life.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 07:02 (one year ago)

for ages I didn't care about Trump. But since becoming aware of the RICO indictment and the logjam of lawsuits and civil cases against him my first port of call every morning is updates on these cases. Sad, really but what can you do?

Sadly we will go on drinking that garbage.

Giuliani losing the defamation case was a pretty great popcorn moment tbf

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 09:11 (one year ago)

New Rolling Stones is kind of interesting because who, actually, is psyched for new Stones? Who is that person? Even fogies stuck in 1973 would presumably rather just listen to Exile.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 09:20 (one year ago)

I mentioned it because there's a kind of inane nudge nudge wink wink advertising campaign going on over here trailing a new Stones album, the worst aspect of which is that it's managed to get on the news when it isn't news.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 09:32 (one year ago)

I heard that on the news this morning and my initial cheery response was: you lads ever considered dying.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 09:42 (one year ago)

I try to avoid ageism but I make an exception for 80 year old rock stars who should have retired 30 years ago.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 09:50 (one year ago)

Mick Jagger has regular blood transfusions from babies and is a tory. There is nothing to admire about him. If ever you see a pic of a dishevelled looking Keith Richards drinking Jack Daniels, the bottle is actually full of Ribena. Fake pisshead.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 10:05 (one year ago)

who, actually, is psyched for new Stones? Who is that person?

I work with that person. This person, who is my age, will undoubtedly call this the best album released in the last 19 years.

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 13:47 (one year ago)

The album of blues covers they put out seven years ago was good. If this album sounds like that (it won't) it will be interesting (it won't).

The problem with the Rolling Stones still being out there playing "rock 'n' roll" is that it sends the wrong message. Instead of saying "see, 80-year-olds can still rock 'n' roll" it says "rock 'n' roll is music for 80-year-olds."

no doubt it will be ‘their best album since some girls’

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 14:59 (one year ago)

Best since 1978 according to the front page(!) of the online edition of The Times. Would that be Some Girls?

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:00 (one year ago)

bigger bang was good too

obviously these people have no reason to exist but tbf nor does anything else

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:01 (one year ago)

they have always been people who felt you should play until you die like their old blues guy heroes. but those people really did have to play that long in order to make ends meet! the stones own all the fancy tea sets by now. they obviously don't need money. so they must like it. or they are just the greediest people on earth.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:16 (one year ago)

a guy in town here was charlie's drum tech and i felt really bad for him after charlie passed. it was a sad time. and he had worked for him for years. so many tours. last time i saw him he said he was going to Vegas to work with U2. so, now he's working for kids!
i did have to make a snare drum marching band joke when he told me the U2 thing.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:19 (one year ago)

The problem with the Rolling Stones still being out there playing "rock 'n' roll" is that it sends the wrong message. Instead of saying "see, 80-year-olds can still rock 'n' roll" it says "rock 'n' roll is music for 80-year-olds.

"Problem"; "Wrong message"

I mean, that's kind of accurate, isn't it? 80-year-olds love rock music.

It's not JUST for them, but it is, I'm a sense, for them.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:26 (one year ago)

perhaps anecdotal but the "rock died in the 70s, GVF brought it back!" crowd usually is comprised more of Eric Clapton fans and Zep fans and less Rolling Stones fans.
