One's perception of the tilt of a slash character depends on where one imagines the fixed axis or pivot point, which could be at the top, making it similar to a pendulum, or in the middle, making it similar to a propeller, or at the bottom.

― more difficult than I look (Aimless)

nonsense, slash characters are all queer, it's kind of baked into the medium

Banging post aimless, you would have changed my vote if you posted that earlier tbh

(a pedant writes: light years is a measure of distance, not of time)

koogs, Thursday, 17 August 2023 01:38 (one year ago)

I don't pretend to have a firm grasp on general or special relativity, but isn't it both?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 17 August 2023 01:46 (one year ago)

if that’s true about it being a measure of time then what makes it different from a regular year

the late great, Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:27 (one year ago)

525,600 light years

earosmith (Neanderthal), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:30 (one year ago)

Isn't it the measure of the movement of light through spacetime?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:31 (one year ago)

how do you measure
a light year in the life

earosmith (Neanderthal), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:31 (one year ago)

it’s just the distance it travels in a year

the late great, Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:31 (one year ago)

Exactly, through the three spatial dimensions and the dimension of time.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:32 (one year ago)

Or the who knows how many spatial dimensions.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:32 (one year ago)

how about love

earosmith (Neanderthal), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:33 (one year ago)

you don’t need to overcomplicate it by bringing in relativity. just remember light moves at a fixed pace, so the distance it travels in a fixed amount of time (365.25 days, for example) is also a fixed amount

why light moves at a fixed pace? why that pace appears not to change even if we move toward or away from the light? ok now you need to drag in e&m and relativity

the late great, Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:36 (one year ago)

Also why nothing moves faster than light

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 17 August 2023 02:38 (one year ago)

sarahell, Thursday, 17 August 2023 15:42 (one year ago)

light in a metallic waveguide travels faster than light in free space. but if you modulate it to send information, the modulated light travels more slowly than in free space, making this fact and post useless.

ikr fascinating stuff, and yet also it also takes electrons in your car battery three hours to reach your headlights.

better maybe to think about this stuff like turning on a mile long hose, if there's already water in the hose then it comes out instantly the other end (ok not really it propagates at speed of sound iirc) but that doesn't mean the water from the faucet is traveling at the speed of sound down the hose

Papaya: tasty poo
Oyster: a huge load from a dead guy

stunned that imago has yet to shit on everyone polling their top 50 albums

(not that he would dare to do so with fgti)

maybe once we get to 50 lists we can have a poll for which list is best

Is this going to be the week that ILM is completely unreadable? If so, suits me I suppose because I have stuff I need to get done.

Time for NV to reinstate his 'What makes a man start polls?' board name prefix

MaresNest, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 11:01 (one year ago)

I was actually going to do a poll today based on the best selling album in the UK in 1975 and one of the few albums my mum owned, "The Best of the Stylistics", but when I checked the tracklist it didn't have half the songs on it I thought it had.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 11:17 (one year ago)

i feel like we've done that one before? but yeah the Stylistics's catalogue is broken up over a few labels i think
