What it lacks, and what might be hard to develop, is a large contingent of normal people who signed up to follow celebrities/politicians and stuck around to be a permanent disapproving audience and pool of intermittent guest stars.

this is true. so far the main characters have mainly been the mods, or moderation adjacent drama. the user base is too sophisticated. not enough willing bean dads.

See I dont want a social media space where I can fawn over slebs and go "oooh! They replied to me!". I just want a damn space where I can sort posts by the people *I* want to read, at *my* pace, and occasionally sling a bon mot or grenade into the mix. Livejournal suite that purpose nicely. FB kind of did, but nowhere near as well.
There's no one space anymore where I can catch up with what everyone I know is doing. I have to lurk on FB and Twatter and bsky and ILX and thanks to fucking algorithms I am STILL missing half of what people say and do because I'm not glued to it all 94/7 I am well aware this makes me sound like a cranky old lady version of AlexinNYC but hey whatever.

...maybe bsky will be a good "just my mates" place for at least a while?

My views are largely the same as Trayce (particularly about Livejournal as an apex) but I might go a bit further - I don't think any part of the Hello magazine "see what the stars* really think" aspect of Twitter has done much good for either side.

*stars, politicians, VCs, pretty much anyone - and also of course regular folks who are suddenly the main figure.

I will make an exception for Kristin Hersh who has always been delightful on twitter tbh.

the signal to noise ratio on bluesky is very high, it's so nice to have no ads, no sponsored or promoted content, no real "official" accounts, no spam, just people posting. we'll see how long it lasts.
