Mixing Negronis now. No punching down at this party.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:16 (one year ago)

i don’t think it’s punching down to say someone’s metaphors don’t make sense, it’s not like i hold the keys to ilx or determine anyone’s posting status

the late great, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:16 (one year ago)

now I want a Negroni <3

got it, and sorry for carrying on in the actual thread

rob, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:17 (one year ago)

hey sleeve? you don’t know me, and you don’t know anything about my family. i work 60 hr weeks teaching high school so maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions like that

idk i would like to at least communicate this without making it personal, but to waltz into a thread about music and say "i haven't listened to this but i would like to criticize the way you wrote about this music i haven't listened to" is just kind of a dick move! unsolicited advice at best. honestly kind of off-topic. editors tell me my metaphors don't make sense all the time but i have a working relationship with them. you are a person on a message board

ivy., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:27 (one year ago)

feedback is usually something you ask for unless you're publishing something very publicly and my ilx writing just kinda shouldn't be held to the standard of my published work because i am not working with an editor, please don't hold me to such a standard because i will fail to meet it, and it will upset me, do you get why i got upset?

ivy., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:29 (one year ago)

he's got some previous for this, it's not long since he was telling me to get a thesaurus for not hating his fave director in a verbose enough fashion for his liking!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:30 (one year ago)

well that’s what i already do! can’t really be responsible for people’s weird overreactions

― the late great, Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Yes, you can. Especially when they're telling you so.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:38 (one year ago)

ooh a call back to one of your most infamous posts! i hope i'm not the only one who appreciated that.

sarahell, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 03:42 (one year ago)

the metaphors worked fine - you've got to work to be an asshole about the concept of pressure building (to an explosion) or seeing power lines swaying through a car window

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 08:19 (one year ago)

ivy would've been told to die back in 2001 for that thread with no pushback, so at least this is an improvement (of sorts).

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 08:56 (one year ago)

told to die for starting an enthusiastic thread about an indie rock band? you what

imago, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 10:15 (one year ago)

Indie is like the most hated genre of all time on ILX. Predictably enough.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:06 (one year ago)

Except that nobody can agree on what indie actually is.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:08 (one year ago)

Of course, there's that too. Actually the current glut of polls suggests maybe not as hated as I thought.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:09 (one year ago)

It's like goths who claim not to be goths

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:10 (one year ago)

One thing I always found funny is that what was known in the US as 'College Rock' the UK equivalent got dismissed as 'Student Disco'.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:12 (one year ago)

Student discos were where it was played but I don't think the music itself was ever called student disco.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:14 (one year ago)

Shed Seven, Kingmaker etc certainly did but it was purely a derogatory term used by people. Dont know if it was ever used in the media.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:16 (one year ago)

Yeah, you might be right. That's exactly the sort of band I was thinking of too, I don't know if college rock was the same thing though.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:25 (one year ago)

That's why I said the UK equivalent.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:28 (one year ago)

Amerindie was always quite different to the UK kind. Have a look at my indie rock poll thread and you will see its quite different to the UK indie of its time.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:29 (one year ago)

What I mean is I'm not sure US college rock was about second string indie bands who were on major labels and who were perceived to lack substance or credibility. I thought college rock covered bands like REM, the Replacements, Husker Du as opposed to, er, Cud.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:51 (one year ago)

... but I could be mistaken there.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 11:52 (one year ago)

no you're broadly right

da elephant in daruma (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:04 (one year ago)

I thought college rock was basically indie bands who had jumped to majors so got the bigger push on radio?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:20 (one year ago)

You are not a real ilxor, hence the confusion.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:24 (one year ago)

That’s the way I remember it, although it’s been awhile.

"Indie Dance" was a genre - in about 1992.

― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, August 30, 2023 8:20 AM (six minutes ago)

I thought it was called college rock because it was what was played on *college* radio (small, independent, freeform) not mainstream, at least initially /during the 80s

rob, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:29 (one year ago)

Was around in 89 iirc

xp

As a non-American I obviously know sfa about college rock which is why I brought it up and will defer to actual Americans on the matter.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:30 (one year ago)

xp yes

mookieproof, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:55 (one year ago)

College rock circa 1989 was certainly REM, Replacements, Pixies. It also encompassed more venerable post-punk like Smiths, Cure, Talking Heads. Depeche Mode.

Plus some things that were actually pretty poppy - Blind Melon, Blues Traveler, BNL, etc.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:30 (one year ago)

I listened to the college radio station KUSF throughout the 80s and from what I remember college rock was a reference to indie bands from the 80. It didn't translate to the 90s

Dan S, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:37 (one year ago)

ymp those last 3 were definitely not on radio in 89. there were probably some analogous artists, but I can't think who atm

peace, man, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:40 (one year ago)

89/90 maybe Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega.

90, Sundays? NIN?

You're correct, though - Blind Melon, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo, Hootie etc would have been more like 92/93.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:46 (one year ago)

I'm thinking like Hoodoo Gurus, Smithereens, Stan Ridgway solo

A non-commercial educational station (NCE station) is a radio station or television station that does not accept on-air advertisements (TV ads or radio ads), as defined in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and was originally intended to offer educational programming as part, or whole, of its programming. NCE stations do not pay broadcast license fees for their non-profit uses of the radio spectrum. Stations which are almost always operated as NCE include public broadcasting, community radio, and college radio, as well as many religious broadcasting stations.

On the FM broadcast band, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reserved the lowest 20 channels, 201~220 (88.1~91.9 MHz) for NCE stations only. This is known as the reserved band, sometimes known by the term "left of the dial" (taken from the Replacements song of the same name)

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 31 August 2023 03:25 (one year ago)

Yes, it's what I thought, it's a different thing altogether. "Student disco" is obviously pejorative and college rock isn't - and it's seems it even covers a different time period.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 August 2023 07:05 (one year ago)

Student disco ——> landfill indie ———> ????

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 31 August 2023 07:10 (one year ago)

it’s landfill post-punk right?

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 31 August 2023 07:11 (one year ago)

Followed by the blossoming studentgaze movement.
