idk i would like to at least communicate this without making it personal, but to waltz into a thread about music and say "i haven't listened to this but i would like to criticize the way you wrote about this music i haven't listened to" is just kind of a dick move! unsolicited advice at best. honestly kind of off-topic. editors tell me my metaphors don't make sense all the time but i have a working relationship with them. you are a person on a message board

feedback is usually something you ask for unless you're publishing something very publicly and my ilx writing just kinda shouldn't be held to the standard of my published work because i am not working with an editor, please don't hold me to such a standard because i will fail to meet it, and it will upset me, do you get why i got upset?

he's got some previous for this, it's not long since he was telling me to get a thesaurus for not hating his fave director in a verbose enough fashion for his liking!

One thing I always found funny is that what was known in the US as 'College Rock' the UK equivalent got dismissed as 'Student Disco'.

Student discos were where it was played but I don't think the music itself was ever called student disco.

Shed Seven, Kingmaker etc certainly did but it was purely a derogatory term used by people. Dont know if it was ever used in the media.

Amerindie was always quite different to the UK kind. Have a look at my indie rock poll thread and you will see its quite different to the UK indie of its time.

What I mean is I'm not sure US college rock was about second string indie bands who were on major labels and who were perceived to lack substance or credibility. I thought college rock covered bands like REM, the Replacements, Husker Du as opposed to, er, Cud.

... but I could be mistaken there.

I thought it was called college rock because it was what was played on *college* radio (small, independent, freeform) not mainstream, at least initially /during the 80s

College rock circa 1989 was certainly REM, Replacements, Pixies. It also encompassed more venerable post-punk like Smiths, Cure, Talking Heads. Depeche Mode.

Plus some things that were actually pretty poppy - Blind Melon, Blues Traveler, BNL, etc.

I listened to the college radio station KUSF throughout the 80s and from what I remember college rock was a reference to indie bands from the 80. It didn't translate to the 90s

ymp those last 3 were definitely not on radio in 89. there were probably some analogous artists, but I can't think who atm

You're correct, though - Blind Melon, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo, Hootie etc would have been more like 92/93.
