What I mean is I'm not sure US college rock was about second string indie bands who were on major labels and who were perceived to lack substance or credibility. I thought college rock covered bands like REM, the Replacements, Husker Du as opposed to, er, Cud.

I thought it was called college rock because it was what was played on *college* radio (small, independent, freeform) not mainstream, at least initially /during the 80s

Was around in 89 iirc

As a non-American I obviously know sfa about college rock which is why I brought it up and will defer to actual Americans on the matter.

College rock circa 1989 was certainly REM, Replacements, Pixies. It also encompassed more venerable post-punk like Smiths, Cure, Talking Heads. Depeche Mode.
Plus some things that were actually pretty poppy - Blind Melon, Blues Traveler, BNL, etc.

I listened to the college radio station KUSF throughout the 80s and from what I remember college rock was a reference to indie bands from the 80. It didn't translate to the 90s
― Dan S, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:37 (one year ago) link
ymp those last 3 were definitely not on radio in 89. there were probably some analogous artists, but I can't think who atm
― peace, man, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:40 (one year ago) link
89/90 maybe Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega.
90, Sundays? NIN?
You're correct, though - Blind Melon, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo, Hootie etc would have been more like 92/93.
― Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:46 (one year ago) link
I'm thinking like Hoodoo Gurus, Smithereens, Stan Ridgway solo

The company was started by Robert Haber in 1978 as the College Media Journal, a bi-weekly trade magazine aimed at college radio programmers in Great Neck, NY. The first issue was published on March 1, 1979, and featured Elvis Costello on the cover. Staff would often describe these early issues as 'a bunch of photocopies stapled together.'

A non-commercial educational station (NCE station) is a radio station or television station that does not accept on-air advertisements (TV ads or radio ads), as defined in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and was originally intended to offer educational programming as part, or whole, of its programming. NCE stations do not pay broadcast license fees for their non-profit uses of the radio spectrum. Stations which are almost always operated as NCE include public broadcasting, community radio, and college radio, as well as many religious broadcasting stations. On the FM broadcast band, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reserved the lowest 20 channels, 201~220 (88.1~91.9 MHz) for NCE stations only. This is known as the reserved band, sometimes known by the term "left of the dial" (taken from the Replacements song of the same name)

Yes, it's what I thought, it's a different thing altogether. "Student disco" is obviously pejorative and college rock isn't - and it's seems it even covers a different time period.

earmarked for industry iirc
i was watching a documentary on lon chaney and they talked about the getup chaney used to convincingly pass as someone who had both legs amputated and my girlfriend asked if i was watching a film about kink. then the doco talked about how chaney did "the hunchback of notre dame" and she didn't believe me when i said i wasn't watching a film about kink.
the point is that i don't get that aphorism. not just because there's no use crying over lost feet, but because there are all kinds of reasons people lose their feet. i mean, most of those reasons are tragic, but maybe the person in question had apotemnophilia. i'm not gonna judge.

How can I say this? Skot is a classic old school ILX0r who was here for quite a while before I got here. There might be quite a few areas where I don’t see eye-to-eye with him tastewise, but not always. I really value his contribution on things where we do overlap and on other things I might not have known about without him. I feel similarly to him as I do about unperson.
