who, actually, is psyched for new Stones? Who is that person?

I work with that person. This person, who is my age, will undoubtedly call this the best album released in the last 19 years.

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 13:47 (one year ago)

The album of blues covers they put out seven years ago was good. If this album sounds like that (it won't) it will be interesting (it won't).

The problem with the Rolling Stones still being out there playing "rock 'n' roll" is that it sends the wrong message. Instead of saying "see, 80-year-olds can still rock 'n' roll" it says "rock 'n' roll is music for 80-year-olds."

no doubt it will be ‘their best album since some girls’

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 14:59 (one year ago)

Best since 1978 according to the front page(!) of the online edition of The Times. Would that be Some Girls?

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:00 (one year ago)

bigger bang was good too

obviously these people have no reason to exist but tbf nor does anything else

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:01 (one year ago)

they have always been people who felt you should play until you die like their old blues guy heroes. but those people really did have to play that long in order to make ends meet! the stones own all the fancy tea sets by now. they obviously don't need money. so they must like it. or they are just the greediest people on earth.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:16 (one year ago)

a guy in town here was charlie's drum tech and i felt really bad for him after charlie passed. it was a sad time. and he had worked for him for years. so many tours. last time i saw him he said he was going to Vegas to work with U2. so, now he's working for kids!
i did have to make a snare drum marching band joke when he told me the U2 thing.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:19 (one year ago)

The problem with the Rolling Stones still being out there playing "rock 'n' roll" is that it sends the wrong message. Instead of saying "see, 80-year-olds can still rock 'n' roll" it says "rock 'n' roll is music for 80-year-olds.

"Problem"; "Wrong message"

I mean, that's kind of accurate, isn't it? 80-year-olds love rock music.

It's not JUST for them, but it is, I'm a sense, for them.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:26 (one year ago)

perhaps anecdotal but the "rock died in the 70s, GVF brought it back!" crowd usually is comprised more of Eric Clapton fans and Zep fans and less Rolling Stones fans.

Dinglebert Humperstink (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:32 (one year ago)

so that's one for them I guess.

also I do like RS

Dinglebert Humperstink (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:32 (one year ago)

I love them, but I do not care in the least about anything new they might put out now.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:34 (one year ago)

i'd listen if they put out a rival Honkin' on Bobo

(I know they had an album of blues covers as mentioned upthread but I want them to do Aerosmith's Honkin album, right down to the song choices and the arrangements)

Dinglebert Humperstink (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:35 (one year ago)

cable news wanted me to care about burning man SOOOOOOO MUCH. in the words of george w. bush: not gonna do it.

That goes in the same category as the billionaires in the submarine.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:40 (one year ago)

i don't care about them personally, but I am heavily invested in making fun of them

was at a family reunion a few days ago and found out a bunch of my family members once went to a Stones show because they assumed it was going to be their last chance. this was nearly 40 years ago, lol

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:46 (one year ago)

I saw them in fucking 1981 and we thought they were old then.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:47 (one year ago)

tbf you were wrong

mark s, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:47 (one year ago)

It's all relative, lol, I was 16 and they seemed like pretty old dudes.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:49 (one year ago)

Idk guys, any time an active musician makes it to their 70s and onward and seeks to record/release new music, it feels like a red-letter day to me. Whether it’s Buffy or Smokey or Scott Walker or Judy Collins or Dylan or Neil, I have an intense interest in old-fart music because it does feel like a proper rarity I guess

understandable given so much happened musically between 1965 and 1981. that's really only the difference between uh, Sound of Silver to now

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:53 (one year ago)

Jagger was 38 when “Tattoo You” was released, James Murphy was 37 when “Sound of Silver” came out. So maybe Mick was still a hip young thing in ‘81, just didn’t know it at the time.

lol yes. and somebody or another has said the same of every single album they've released since then

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:24 (one year ago)

Some Girls was their best album since Exile, supposedly. It's grown better-regarded with age.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:26 (one year ago)

The super deluxe release of Exile on Main Street in 2010 was their best since 1978.

pplains, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:37 (one year ago)

The super deluxe release Of Some Girls in 2011 was their best since Dirty Work.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:38 (one year ago)

At least some of the critics in 1978 said that the Stones had jumped the shark and pointed to "Miss You" as evidence.

Then, too, there was the controversy over the "black girls" lyric. They just seemed an embarrassing anachronism.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:39 (one year ago)

i pretty much always play either beggars banquet, let it bleed, some girls, or emotional rescue when i play the stones now. and tattoo you. which i love. and undercover. which i also love. i think that's the stones i need in my life at this late date.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:50 (one year ago)

Sticky Fingers is my go-to.

My man. Throw in Dirty Work instead of BB and that's my listening. I'm a fan of what Rob Sheffield once called their mall rat years (1978-1983).

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:53 (one year ago)

I am shocked, shocked to find so few shout-outs to Steel Wheels and/or "Mixed Emotions" itt.

("Miss You" rules tho)

i always play the rolling stones channel on spotify

I was more plugged in to classic rock circles in the late 90's/early 00's and it did feel like every damn boomer artist was still regularly releasing music, even if just on very small labels. But of course there's way less of them around now.

True, Jagger used to be 3'5"!

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:05 (one year ago)

old guys releasing new music is still cool especially in light of the mass exodus of the classic rock generation these last 7 years but its def pretty sad sometimes

true but also in retrospect they weren't all that old. like I think of ELP in the 90s as an example of the sadness mentioned above and then you realize that they were only in their mid-40s. which a lot of good active touring artists are right now.

idk it seemed fairly random what bands made it and what ones didn't back in the mid-60s, I often wonder what if say Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs got boosted hard and if they would've turned into the Beach Boys when they were really good or something

frogbs, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:20 (one year ago)

I watched the video for "Angry" today but I was more mesmerized by the billboard special effects than the song itself

But it's fine, it's okay

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 7 September 2023 15:47 (one year ago)

the bill maher parody that tim did? yeah, it was fun. he did a great job. bill maher was on ari melber's show last night on msnbc and i was hoping ari would bring it up but why would he? but ari did quote jay z. god he is such a dadrock when he does that...oof. bill maher still hates trump but is still worried about the RADICAL LEFT. cuz they so scary. how? i have no idea.
i still think about how bill maher said before the 2016 election that if donald trump was elected that he wouldn't leave office. nobody believed him.

scott seward, Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:47 (one year ago)

i still need to finish watching Beef House. i don't think i watched it all.
