He'll figure it out, he was just never a barfly which may be to his advantage

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 23:50 (one year ago)

yeah. I think a quick bartending class could help in some places, but just figuring it out on the job is par for
the course

It’s always an experience watching someone order a drink that’s probably above the expected level in a place even if they have the ingredients, usually falling back on the customer not gauging their environment. Probably not so much on that drink, if they have juice

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:02 (one year ago)

I saw some douche canoe walk into the aforementioned dump and ask to see the wine list

"We have white... And we have red."

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:04 (one year ago)

Lots of very good drinks have precisely two ingredients separated by an ampersand.

Just sayin.

The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:24 (one year ago)

sometimes the bartender doesn’t know for sure if you’re just there for a nice drink or to get loaded and you get the crispiest gin&tonic ever. having a clued-in person helps

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:46 (one year ago)

I mean, unless the right portion is 80% gin. I guess sometimes I just don’t care

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:47 (one year ago)

i don't think i've ever gone on bandcamp? i feel bad for ned though. i know he loves the place. and anyone hear who works/worked there! sorry it got bought by evildoers. that's just the way of the techbizzness though i think. buy and then dump and then lay off and then buy something else and....forever. seems like it would make you so tired to do that all the time.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:28 (one year ago)

i don't download or upload though. i just ripped my first CD this summer! oh right: i don't care about downloading or uploading. my computer has one cd on it. from this summer!

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:29 (one year ago)

nah the Bandcamp thing really is disappointing because it really did seem to be run by people who loved music and were willing to pay artists fairly which is a real rarity these days, but yeah that's the way of the world

frogbs, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:34 (one year ago)

not just a really bad thing for the ppl who use it as customers or work at it but also for musicians in general

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:36 (one year ago)

need a true artist co-op on the internet.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:37 (one year ago)

worker-owned businesses are the future here where i live. the local pickle company is an inspiration like that.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:38 (one year ago)

scott, the other bit of bandcamp is it's probably the largest direct market for bands and labels to sell physical media these days, outside of shows. I have no clue what the bandcamp cut is, but you can buy vinyl, cds, t-shirts, and assorted ephemera on there, too. you might have some used records (albeit of recent vintage) in your store someone bought off there!

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:52 (one year ago)

yeah, its totally popular! well, i guess people have to hope for the best. the sharks who bought it claim to want to still give artists their cut? but who knows. it does suck when something works and people break it anyway. discogs is a similar case.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:54 (one year ago)

No more Bandcamp Fridays :(

The First Time Ever I Saw Gervais (Tom D.), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:58 (one year ago)

wait what

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 14:59 (one year ago)

... I don't know if there are no more Bandcamp Fridays tbh

The First Time Ever I Saw Gervais (Tom D.), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 15:00 (one year ago)

ppl got mad at me a couple of years ago when I mentioned Bandcamp on this thread. I don't have anything against it, it's just never been part of my life!

jaymc, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 15:01 (one year ago)

yeah its like myspace. i never went there but i got why people did. i had an account it just wasn't for me. i wasn't even friends with anyone there. not even that one guy everyone was friends with.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 15:03 (one year ago)

i also just don't buy music online. or merch. youtube has always given me 100% of what i want from music online. and i do pay 10 bucks a month or whatever for the premium YT. but i doubt artists get much from them. just a hunch.

wait now i am remembering that i might have bought that live Can CD from bandcamp? the double cd. i think that was the only way i could get it here at the time. i pre-ordered it! i'd never done that before.

i have gone to label websites to buy. mostly metal. didn't need bandcamp for that.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 15:09 (one year ago)

I think some of my collaborations are on Bandcamp? Maybe? Some on SoundCloud and some just YouTube. I have never been very good at putting everything in one place, and I am normally just a sidebeing so I don't necessarily even know where, when, or if things get released.

The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 15:29 (one year ago)

meanwhile this is the merger that is shocking the nation. lemonheads + jelly belly? there is no stopping the Ferrara juggernaut!

"We're elated to announce an agreement to acquire Jelly Belly Candy Company. We have long admired Jelly Belly’s imaginative products, talented team, and passion for creating high-quality, innovative sugar confections, and we look forward to welcoming its team into our Ferrara community later this year."

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 17:16 (one year ago)

a friend just announced on insta that he lost his job at bandcamp

As mentioned upthread, they really did employ a lot of committed music nerds.. right here in Downtown Oakland as well

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 17:16 (one year ago)

Rick Rubin, any podcast/video series/documentary featuring Rick Rubin and probably any album produced by Rick Rubin after The Black Album.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 20 October 2023 09:53 (one year ago)

You should read Rick Rubin's new book The Creative Act: A Way of Being (no you shouldn't actually)

Josefa, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:32 (one year ago)

so sick of seeing rick rubin's feet. buy some shoes, hippie!

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:41 (one year ago)

I think you could go back much further than his one song on the Black Album. Which came out second, License To Ill or Radio?

sell cigs to kids (a hoy hoy), Friday, 20 October 2023 17:04 (one year ago)

rick rubin needs to do a podcast with dave grohl.

as annoying as he he now i can't make too much fun of him. because slayer. and yeah because radio. and because of the masters of reality debut. oh heck lots of reason.

you guys are gonna make fun of me but i finally got a copy on vinyl of his dumb queen remix and its just something that i have always loved. i've had the promo CD since it came out. we will rock you with beats. shit that sounds so dumb when i read it...

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:13 (one year ago)

ooh a podcast with dave grohl and steve albini! yikes. and it would be about the history of soul music.

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:14 (one year ago)

I have a hard time caring about any podcast that involves two or more dudes talking about stuff and laughing at their own jokes.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 20 October 2023 17:18 (one year ago)

when they invite a laughing friend that makes them both laugh a lot. yeah...

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:19 (one year ago)

not currently accepting opinions on bandcamp from ppl who pay for youtube

budo jeru, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:36 (one year ago)

oh, that was already two days ago.

i guess i just read text here and respond as if there's an eternal, ongoing convo

budo jeru, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:39 (one year ago)

i pay for youtube because i listen to a lot of playlists at work and i don't want to get commercials. that's it in a nutshell.

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:42 (one year ago)

i get it. just being silly

budo jeru, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:48 (one year ago)

I pay to avoid ads via Apple TV but I signed up via Argentina so it’s $1 a month.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 20 October 2023 17:50 (one year ago)

my kid went away to school and i'm using his PS5 to play the one game i love and he bought the PS5 from another kid and it still has that kid'a amazon prime account on it and i watch various movies where liam neeson has various brain disorders for free! #lifehack

scott seward, Friday, 20 October 2023 17:56 (one year ago)

i hate most podcasts for the reasons yall just stated. sorry, i can also get stoned and bullshit about something i know a lot about for 30+ minutes, this is called “being a human being”

"I have a hard time caring about any podcast that involves two or more dudes talking about stuff and laughing at their own jokes."

that's precisely what repelled me from a lot of podcasts in the last decade, a prime example of this was a left-wing politics one that used to be all over my twitter feed and I was too grumpy to last more than a few minutes with it. Then a couple of years back multiple woman were coming out and saying that one of the chief laugh-at-his-own-jokes-blokes from this podcast had sexually assaulted them and was a persistent danger.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 21 October 2023 08:20 (one year ago)

the best thing about podcasts is they demonstrate the importance of editing

no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 21 October 2023 08:32 (one year ago)

I don't like any podcast where there is any laughter whatsoever. Just dry commentary please.

Structure is the main lack for podcasts.

But even so I am not a talk radio listener.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:11 (one year ago)

I'm astounded by the number of clips that show up in Instagram suggestions from comedy lifestyle podcasts featuring 2-4 dudes or usually 2 women. There cannot be so many listeners that everyone who's done 15 minutes at the Laugh Factory can make money from podding.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:35 (one year ago)

Radio dramas are where it's at but sometimes it's hard to tell which ones are going to sound like rejected Joss Whedon scripts.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:38 (one year ago)

I did a podcast with a friend recently and I listened to five minutes of it afterwards and was bored.

What's even worse is watching a video version of a podcast. Oh cool now I can SEE people sitting around talking!

real warm grandpa (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:44 (one year ago)

Personal quirk: I can pretty much only listen to a podcast when I am driving a car.

There is almost no other activity that I can combine with audio input. If I'm at home or at work, I am probably doing something incompatible with listening to words.

And I really hate driving a car, so by extension I am not hearing podcasts very much at present. That said, it's the perfect mix: driving only uses the parts of my brain that are compatible with hearing words.

Like, my beloved wife will have a podcast or music or YouTube going... while also working as a completely kickass reporter/writer/editor. I cannot do that because I can only have one stream of words in my brain at a time.

Also videos are mostly terrible - gah, can I please read the transcript at my own pace?

The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:46 (one year ago)

Video pods are basically...TV Talk Shows?

Surely it’s more about ego than money.
