I don't like any podcast where there is any laughter whatsoever. Just dry commentary please.
― Jeff, Saturday, 21 October 2023 10:58 (one year ago)
I have a hard time caring about any podcast that involves two or more dudes talking about stuff and laughing at their own jokes.
Wait till you read ilx!

the best thing about podcasts is they demonstrate the importance of editing

Structure is the main lack for podcasts.
But even so I am not a talk radio listener.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:11 (one year ago)
I'm astounded by the number of clips that show up in Instagram suggestions from comedy lifestyle podcasts featuring 2-4 dudes or usually 2 women. There cannot be so many listeners that everyone who's done 15 minutes at the Laugh Factory can make money from podding.

Radio dramas are where it's at but sometimes it's hard to tell which ones are going to sound like rejected Joss Whedon scripts.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:38 (one year ago)
I did a podcast with a friend recently and I listened to five minutes of it afterwards and was bored.
What's even worse is watching a video version of a podcast. Oh cool now I can SEE people sitting around talking!

Personal quirk: I can pretty much only listen to a podcast when I am driving a car.
There is almost no other activity that I can combine with audio input. If I'm at home or at work, I am probably doing something incompatible with listening to words.
And I really hate driving a car, so by extension I am not hearing podcasts very much at present. That said, it's the perfect mix: driving only uses the parts of my brain that are compatible with hearing words.
Like, my beloved wife will have a podcast or music or YouTube going... while also working as a completely kickass reporter/writer/editor. I cannot do that because I can only have one stream of words in my brain at a time.
Also videos are mostly terrible - gah, can I please read the transcript at my own pace?

Video pods are basically...TV Talk Shows?

well. its just publicity too. and a way to tell people to go see you at yukyuks on the turnpike. i mean its free sorta. so why not.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 13:27 (one year ago)
i can't listen to the true crime podcasts that are all the rage. they all sound like this american life to me. which i also could never listen to. feel like a lot of podcasts just use that show as their template. plus i just have a hard time with the closevoice thing. also i don't care about true crime really.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 13:29 (one year ago)
i think the only podcast i enjoy is Fall of Civilizations, which has its minor flaws but is really well done and soothing imo

as far as thread goes: new scorsese. i can't take leo. i never need to see him in another movie as long as i live. his big rich moon face trying to play living breathing people makes me cringe. feel like he peaked at...whenever basketball diaries was. he was really good at playing a young beautiful kid who didn't know anything. as a puffy multi-zillionaire who doesn't know anything...just the trailer alone for wolf of wall street made me want to barf. i would watch Silence sometime though! and i enjoyed Hugo! and i still haven't seen Bring Out The Dead. would watch that. if i'm being honest i haven't loved a movie of his since After Hours. and i'll re-watch Sopranos if i need funny mean guys. amazing that he's so old and still making epics though. it pays to be tiny when you are old. you can last longer.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 14:39 (one year ago)
Irishman is great and has zero Leo in it.

I think I need to see all 50 of the movies Abel Ferrara and Willem Dafoe have made together in the last five years before I see another Scorsese movie.

Marty's good old boy movies remind me of those jokes about the movie Speed. Goodfellas in Vegas! Goodfellas in old New York! Goodfellas on Wall Street!
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 14:48 (one year ago)
i get it if you are an olde-tyme film fan. you kinda HAVE to see his new movies. but i have the entire island of Hong Kong at my disposal. IN FACT I have 5 million world cinema movies that Martin Scorsese has given the thumbs up to that i want to see first.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 14:51 (one year ago)
wait, is hong kong an island....peninsula....? i'll google.
Scott, pretty sure the short answer is both. The "territory" includes islands and an adjacent peninsula.
― The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 21 October 2023 15:08 (one year ago)
olde-tyme film fans know about hong kong iirc. hong kong is pretty famous
"two or more people laughing at their own jokes" is the only kind of podcast i'll listen to; the other kind is for people who can't read

The multiple dudes thing (and I use the term "dudes" intentionally) can kill what would otherwise be an interesting subject. The prime example of this is The Last Podcast on the Left. They cover what I think is interesting material--serial killers, the occult, etc.--but their humor is so juvenile and offensive that I find it unlistenable. I guess there must be an audience for it, but I'm not in it.
Contrast this with Astonishing Legends, which is also two dudes covering similar material. They tend to go way long, but when I have the time to listen I find it engaging.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 21 October 2023 16:34 (one year ago)
Juvenile, offensive and self-satisfied, I should say. At least one of them is a comic, and they're all convinced they're killing. I just don't care.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 21 October 2023 16:35 (one year ago)
The formula usually is one mild-voiced, well-researched gent is consistently interrupted by a gravel-voiced, incurious, chucklehead lout
― Dwigt Rortugal (Eric H.), Saturday, 21 October 2023 16:36 (one year ago)
My monocle pops
Jacked Kirby skates the border of the same territory, but those two dudes have such an obvious love and knowledge of the subject, and manage to get such great guests, that I stick around.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 21 October 2023 16:37 (one year ago)
Jacked Kirby, meet Swole Ditko

live updates : yeah, he is still dead.
― mark e, Saturday, 21 October 2023 17:07 (one year ago)
i think the comedian ones might be the worst because the younger comics are laughing too hard at the established comic guest's jokes in the hope that they bring them out on tour someday as an opener. comics tend to be pretty shameless.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 17:42 (one year ago)
although i have to say i really did enjoy the bill burr podcast where he did it live onstage in front of an audience. but he is just really great improviser. and talker. to me he is anyway. i'm a fan. and it was just him. no guests.
― scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 17:44 (one year ago)
podcasts, NPR, morning zoo... I've just hated the sound of anyone talking since Jack Buck died.

i miss the new york radio of my youth. gene klavan. william b. williams. harry harrison. cousin brucie. alison steele. frankie crocker. jean shepherd. jonathan schwartz. jonathan schwartz would have flourished with the closetalking confessional world of podcasts.

also: jada and will. sheesh. who gives a fuck. there's a war on. there is no speaker. there are wildfires. no offense to the hilltop hustlers or the fairmount park plateau or south philly tomato pies or pete dexter but fuck will smith. at some point those L. Ron dopes take enough money from these stars and tell them its their job to save the planet and they go nutso! sad, really...

My one initial direction to the two other blokes I brought on board for my podcast where we talk about stuff: no nervous giggling. Can’t stand that. The only laughter on our podcast is when we’re genuinely laughing, and even that sometimes get edited.

think I've said something along these lines (maybe even itt) but something happened about a decade ago, maybe more, where the commonly understood meaning of "podcast" went from "downloadable radio show" to "lazy unedited ramblings" - think it was at the same moment a load of media pros and celebrities got involved.I was interviewed for a podcast newsletter one time and annoyed my interviewer by saying I don't think everyone should start their own podcast, I am too tired of checking out new ones and finding it's just another two guys talking for hours around a potentially interesting topic, but with nothing to say.

It’s an easier way to learn things because I’m too old and tired to read anything.
― Jeff, Saturday, 21 October 2023 23:14 (one year ago)
I personally can’t learn anything from podcasts and I’m convinced people that can are a space aliens. I take in, maybe 10% of the information from podcasts that I would by reading. Poster otm who said two dudes talking is the only worthwhile form of podcast (and even then!).
There’s a Knausgaard Podcast (our struggle) by two dudes (one of the dudes is a dudette) that I find comforting. It gets played the once every three months when I’m driving and don’t feel like listening to music anymore. That’s it, far better things to do with my ears
― Peach’s burner account (H.P), Saturday, 21 October 2023 23:21 (one year ago)
The reason I like that podcast is because the podcasts hosts clearly understand they are losers (I love them). This is an absolutely essential part of being a podcaster
